Location: on top of the hill, 2 minutes down to the beach, amazing view of the Indian Ocean, the mountains and the moon reflected on the see.

Rooms : we had the family suit - amazing !!!
it is huge, clean, hot water in the shower, 2 balconies .

Food; the food was ok. I am vegetarian - not a lot for me to eat. (the chef did try)
breakfast was very simple.

negative: after we payed what we agreed (according to the email they sent prior to our arrival), they asked us to pay for extra 2 beds in the room , for each bed per night (we stayed 7 nights).
We booked a Family Suit, meaning there are 4 beds at the room, so why to pay twice ?!

We had such a warm welcome on the day after our marriage, with smiling staff and welcome drinks. The best surprise was being upgraded to the Presidential Suite with petals and flowers strewn on the floor and heart shapes on the bed. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel special. Thank you so much!

Such a beautiful and relaxing hotel! I stayed for two days at the end of a work trip. There were several families staying, but the hotel is well set out so that even though I was trying to work in a quiet and beautiful setting (rather than fully being on vacation) I didn't feel out of place. The wifi was acceptable and the staff was great about getting me what I needed to keep working. Breakfast was a bit pathetic (I like a good breakfast buffet) but sufficient. Otherwise the food was great.

I suspect this hotel suffered badly while tourism was cut off during covid, given how much my experience differed from those of other travellers and hasn't been able to fully recover. Toilets that didn't work - in fact, the flushing mechanism came off in my hand. Walkways without rails or bannisters, Curtains that didn't cover the window and didn't slide back and forth. Privacy curtains with big holes. Sliding doors as the main entry to the room, with locks that didn't work. Full breakfast available only when the cook arrived at whatever time. No clear description of what was included in the demi-pension dinner, so a nightly exchange with the waiter. No screens on the windows which would be left wide open after cleaning staff finished their visit. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone until it has had a chance to refurbish and reinforce staffing and management.

Great location with fantastic views and sunset. Poor service with regards that towels were out in laundry and not back till after 7pm. We weren’t informed of that on arrival at 5pm. Ordering food was a nightmare - communicating in English, different priced menus, orders taken on paper serviette and food taking over an hour to arrive and 1 of the meals was late and 1 portion of fries never arrived despite asking many times. Two of our party were unwell after but difficult to know if due to the food there. Rooms were ok but needing some maintenance. Smoke out of extension when we used the kettle. Hygiene not great with cats in the eating area.

Stayed one night is this beautiful hotel overlooking the Indian Ocean with a similar view from my large well appointed room. Comfy bed and excellent shower. Good food , particularly breakfast, however slow service of Pizzas in the evening. Very good WiFi in all areas and a laundry service.

A Whole New Level of Disappointment

First, it is easy to love Talinjoo immediately. The setting is stunning and the design is perfection. The rooms are large, and very kid-friendly. There is beach access, a infinity pool with an ample-sized kid’s section. There is a spa on site, and a delicious-looking menu.

Unfortunately, the management is so poor that we felt very clearly as if the staff were trying to get us to leave, actively pushing us to the door. It was not a random selection of poor encounters, but rather every single engagement, from meals to laundry, to housekeeping, to the spa and bar. It felt from the moment we arrived, that they wanted us to leave.

It was “high season,” but we never saw more than 3 other small parties at the hotel, so it was a very low volume period of “high season.”

Same-Day laundry was delivered two days later. The staff told us the weather (cloudless blue, high 80s, slight breeze) was the cause. Our laundry was returned less than 24 hours before we left, charged at full price.
During lunch on the last, very cold and very windy day, the management decided to apply lacquer to the wood in the dining room. We sat in the freezing wind until the children couldn’t stand it, and then moved to the nauseating, non-vented dining room. Why did they choose meal time to do that work? Why did they chose a day when they would not be able to ventilate the room? We didn’t know either.
The menu is extensive. We ate 5 lunches and dinners there - the hotel is isolated, a taxi for our party of 6 would be expensive and take some time. We found that only about 20% of the menu was actually available, and it always takes 60-90 minutes to arrive. Plan accordingly. When what we ordered was not available we would only be informed 20-30 minutes after placing our order. We tried asking our server to confirm a meal’s availability. They did. They then returned 20-30 minutes later to tell us it was not. We never ordered a meal that was fully available, or even fully correct. Twice, they simply gave us something entirely different than what we ordered (food and drinks). Do we send it back, and wait another 90 minutes?
The staff never asked how they could help us with sleeping arrangements for our 3 and 1-year olds, nor did they prepare the room for 4 - though they charged for it. We found one robe, two towels, no hand towels, and sleeping space for three.
The power went out for a few hours each day, and the staff never put candles or alternative lighting in pitch dark bathrooms. They didn’t start the generator because they were “out of fuel.” Power outages are frequent in the area.
Breakfast is supposed to be at 7am. It is written, and staff confirmed this on multiple occasions. The breakfast was never (of the three mornings) available until after 7:45am. The kitchen seemed unprepared for the known number of guests - pastries are tiny and laid out 4 at a time. They are refilled only every 20 minutes. One morning we were told there was no juice because there was no electricity. Then, 20 minutes later, while the power was still out, juice was laid out. Eggs were only available if you ran down a server and asked - none of whom wear uniforms or had obvious designations of employment. By 8:15am, there were no more eggs - inexplicably.
The spa failed to communicate with the front desk. We scheduled a massage at 10:30am at the front desk. They confirmed it. When we got to the spa, they had no record of the reservation, nor where they prepared. The spa is 2 minutes’ walk from the front desk on the same property. The spa would not provide the massage requested (off their massage menu) without a intimidating negotiation. When waiting for the massage table to be readied, we sat in a dark hallway, not in the beach-facing lounge chairs. Why did any of that happen?

We were simply stunned by the exceptionally poor service - it felt more like navigating a maddening and apathetic bureaucracy than a hotel. When we raised concerns, we dismissed, or engaged in a debate about how the mistake was in fact ours.

This place could be so wonderful, and could even manage with a few mistakes given the setting and design. However, until they completely overhaul their management team, and adequately train their staff, this will be a deeply frustrating experience for guests.

This hotel is beautifully situated and compared to the town it is an oasis! My room was huge with a big balcony overlooking the bay. I was just unfortunate that there were works being carried out just next to me so during the day it was noisy and had little privacy. The food was fairly good but in the evening dinner was served by unsmiling faces.

The rooms and the decor were suited to the place. What a view it has and how much you feel close to nature. The hotel has great host and a management that wants to develop it more. The food too was yummy. Whether its a romantic or family or a business stay, I would recommend strongly.

First visit 5 days ago we had a drink on the terasse. No problems except bad sound in piano which is not well accorded.
Back again 3 days ago for dinner. Calamars were smelling rott. The cocktails were half big as the first visit but for the same price indeed.
Serving people are OK but no manager visible.
Today 05/01/2015 our children wanted to find a swimming pool. We first had a drink at the cocktail bar .... again small version cocktails. Then our children wanted to play on the billiard and the manager refused. Our children are calm and well educated. Why refusing this ???? Even the stick were without tissue..... Our children then went to the swimming pool : GREEN LOOKING full of bactéries. Forbidden for health to get in this pool !!!!
For our veterinary dokter we transported a lemur with us to bring him to the Tana clinic. The manager told us it was forbidden to transport this animal. I told him, we did it for the Vetcare Clinic and I had the official papers from "Eaux et Forets" for the transportation even by Air Madagascar by plane.
He still insisted, it was illegal, and our stay became boaring. I told him to call the police if he wanted to officialize his acts. The ambiance was so bad due to this guy. We left and won't get there , ever again. Servers and reception people are very kind and were confused with this stupid person... I wished them good succes with him.

Response from sukhangad_singh, Executive Chef at Talinjoo Hotel
Responded 13 Jan 2015
Greetings form Talinjoo Hotel, Dear sir i am the awful manager that you are talking about. Let me take you through the incidents one at a time. -Lemur incident - This was our first interaction at the hotel, keeping lemurs as pets is completely illegal in Madagascar and we as an Eco-hotel have responsibilities to conserve nature, environment and Malagasy law. I can also recall that you brought the lemur on a leash, which was dragged on the restaurant floor. we accept pets but dear sir, again lemur is not a pet...its a wild animal and illegal to posses. With all respect sir you also never had the papers on you certifying that the animal is on medical evacuation. Even if the animal is on medical evacuation why would you bring it to a restaurant specially on a leash and handled by kids. I believe a sick animal deserves better. Please understand sir that keeping these animals is illegal and is incredibly detrimental to not only the animal's health, but also the perception of lemurs worldwide with visitors coming to Madagascar and seeing these animals kept as pets, it is a huge problem as they now want to have them and it propels an illegal pet trade which becomes rampant. Swimming pool- Our swimming pool was closed for a week because it was on annual maintenance. Moreover you were being advised by the reception staff about it. Swimming pool is also limited to hotel room guests and members. I apologize for the inconvenience caused because of the swimming pool. Cocktail drink size - For the new years we had special offers like free mojitos, bigger cocktails and a lot more. the big cocktails you are talking about is from the promotion (limited offer to celebrate the new year with our guests). Other than that our drinks are all standardized and have recipe cards. for example tequila sunrise is in a collins glass, Coco punch is Rolie-polie and so on. Billiards table- Your kids are indeed well behaved, well educated and calm and obviously they were not the problem here but the lemur. We asked you to present the legal papers supporting that you could bring a wild, injured and possibly illegally obtained animal to a restaurant on a leash before we could offer any further services to you. We also had a lot of in house guest complaints regarding the lemur on the leash as most of our guests are Eco-oriented and find activities like this disturbing and unacceptable. I feel bad for the kids as they were not able to play but we have to follow standard operating procedures for delivering the best services to our clients and guests. (SOP here was to not allow animal trafficking). Dearest sir....I, the management and the staff really feel bad that one of our guests were not happy with our services but under no circumstances we shall allow illegal activities on our property. Kind regards Sukhangad Singh
