Michamvi Sunset Bay Resort is beautiful small property in a quiet area in south east Zanzibar. The hotel was very quiet due to fewer tourists but was a pleasure to stay at. The property is directly on a western facing beach with powdery white sand, the sunsets are spectacular. The room was very large, with a balcony. There are a few rooms directly on the beach. My room was spotless, with daily cleaning and turn down. The staff and Shirley, the onsite manager couldn't have been more gracious and helpful. The hotel provides bottled water daily, bath products and insect repellent. Rooms have a safe, large shower, small refrigerator, luggage storage area and desk. They can rustle up a taxi in a few minutes notice if you want to visit other parts of the island. Kayaks and SUPs are gratis. Book a full or half board stay - the restaurant puts our excellent food. The last night was local lobster. All the local seafood was super fresh and perfectly cooked. Shirley arranged candles and a bonfire on the beach one night. The bar is on the beach and the staff are very personable. The pool didn't appear to be heated, but was a reasonable temperature. Pool/beach loungers and towels are provided. Recommended highly for a tranquil stay in Zanzibar.

If i will ever come back to Zanzibar, i will definetely choose the same resort, for this all in one concept: best location directly on the beach, big enough not to feel crowded, small enough to know by name the staff and guests; everybody, from cleaning lady up to management are smiling, friendly, prompt and professional. Amazing Spa!!!! Great dinner set up, different every night... definetely i will recommend it to everyone coming to Zanzibar! Keep up the great work! Catalina Tudose, Romania

We spent two night, three days here and it was just right. It was the week before their high season so the whole place was quiet and unobtrusive. The staff were all lovely and really helpful, especially Shirley one of the managers. She was wonderful, intuitive and full of information, I can't praise her highly enough, she was/is excellent.. We booked a ground floor room but there was a mix up (with the booking provider, not Michamvi) and we were put in an upstairs terraced room, which was fine.
The whole resort has a tropical feel, the rooms are a bit tired and maybe need a bit of upkeep, the hotel knows this and it had all been planned before covid hit them and they didn't have the funds or ability. It's on the right side of basic, clean, fresh, well looked after. The food at the bar and in the restaurant was good, varied and tasty. The pool isn't heated and was slightly cool.
The beach is idilic, however you MUST bring water shoes for going in the water as there is a lot of sharp shells and rocks/coral, makes going into the water tricky (& painful). There isn't much to see on the snorkelling front, the water is shallow and empty.
One annoying thing, which is out of control of the hotel, is the amount of hawkers on the beach. As soon as you enter onto the beach they are there, calling you, walking with you, chatting and questioning...they aren't threatening but really really intrusive and tedious, one after the other, relentless. I can imagine if you were a solo traveller it might be intimidating. It put me off walking along the beach as every two minutes there was someone at your side asking where you're from, etc. You learn quickly how to, politely, say leave me alone.
All in all I would recommend this resort, was a bit of a drive to get to from the airport but lovely calming place to be, beautiful sunsets, lovely staff, nice food and just a tropical zen place for a few days.
However - be aware there is construction work next door - 27/7 - and it got a bit noisy at times at night.

Pros and cons
Pros : the lunch and dinner were very good, there is nothing bad to say about the food, always arrived quickly and it was delicious.
The staff and managers were all very nice. All the staff was speaking english on a very good level so it was easy to communicate with everyone, you could even chat with them. The managers were always making sure we were enjoying our food and stay.
The beach was very nice, they would clean it every morning.
Cons : The rooms. Their website tells us that the hotel has "20 luxurious rooms", well the rooms were far from luxury. There were no TVs in the rooms, no telephone so you can call the reception if in need of assistance, the fridge/mini-bar was empty, the curtain pole was rusty, the furniture was old, the door, balcony door and windows were also very old and not secure, I had 2 lizards coming in my room from under the door and also when I arrived there was a spider the size of my palm in the corner of my room. When I arrived there was also an odd smell to the room, it smell like mold, in the bathroom it always smelled like the sewer. There was space between the balcony doors so a lot of bugs and lizards could get in the room, the same thing to the main door, under it was a lot of space. You could not leave the balcony doors open because you might have visitor such as lizards or even a monkey that kept visiting the hotel, I heard other tourists saying that it got inside their rooms looking through their stuff, she was cute but I would not like to have it in my room.
The hotel is very far away from the city and the airport.
The breakfast could use some improving. It is not diverse there are little things you can chose from, the only thing good thing about it was the fact that they would make you an omlette on the spot.
Over all I was expecting a lot more from a 4 star hotel, and also from reading the reviews and the hotels website but after spending a week there I can say that it does not deserve that much praise. If they get the rooms to 2021 standards then the hotel would deserve its praise and good reviews.

Jambo Ana Thank you for this detailed review, we really do appreciated comments, suggestions and praises. We are really happy you enjoyed the food and the great service from our wonderful staff. Regarding your criticism of the rooms, we regret that you did not find the room adequate to your liking. We have had an upgrade plan in place since last year and are slowly implementing this however it has been a real struggle just to survive as a hotel in the last year due to no business caused by the pandemic. It is only recently that we were able to accept guests again and still the future of business is uncertain in these trying times. We are a small family owned and run business and do not have the support of a big corporation behind us, therefore we can only upgrade slowly as resources become available. We are very proud that we can still offer amazing service and food and we hope that you can return in the future once the small upgrades have taken place. Africa is full of wonderful sights and experiences and living in or visiting Africa a person always encounters insects, reptiles and animals and this is what makes it a special place. Kind Regards Brad and The Michamvi Team

Spacious bedrooms with very comfortable bed, crisp white linen and mosquito nets. Fans and aircon ensure a wonderful nights sleep. There is a fridge in the room.

Michamvi Sunset Bay is in a beautiful position on the beach. Great swimming pool. Beach bar with daily cocktails for sundowners. Food is fresh and authentic. Mostly sourced from local farmers. Dinner is served in a different location every night - my favourite is next to the pool.

The hotel is very clean and gardens very well tended.

There is lots to do in the area - we went on a dhow for a sunset trip
to nearby mangroves, went snorkelling and on a trip to historical Stonetown.

I will be back!

Very relaxing , no crowds or noise .
This is not a large 5 star , all singing all dancing hotel nor does it claim to be.
It’s a small family run hotel with an authentic atmosphere .
We spent four nights here and enjoyed the downtime with books , good food with some swimming kayaking and paddle boarding thrown in.
The breakfast and dinner were of great quality. The bar area looks out over the sea and dramatic sunset .
The beach area to the front is beautiful .
The owner and management are always at hand and nothing is too much trouble .
For those that need to connect with the outside world there is good WiFi throughout the property .
About 90 minutes from the airport . I would suggest to let the hotel arrange your transfer .

Stayed her for three nights and it was really nice and relaxing. The owner/manager welcomed us and explained all the practicalities at check-in. She was very nice and during our stay she continued to ask and ensure we had a great experience. Our room was very nice with sea view and a balcony. This is a great resort for couples, small families that just wants to relax, enjoy the beach or pool. It’s somewhat secluded but it’s only a 15-20min drive to Paje and Jambiani. All in all; good value for money.

Heaven on Earth! We just left after out second visit and this place is absolutely magical.

It is very small, but it still feels like you have many options to choose from. From hanging out in the magical beach bar to lying by the beautiful pool or exploring the water on the paddle boards.

Each night a new location is chosen for dinner and this really helps create variety and make each experience unique.

There is the most magical sunset every night that we never get tired off.

But what we love the most is the people. Huge thank you to Shirley for always making us safe and happy, and to the whole staff.

We will definitely be back again!

The place is realy great! Ocean, beach, view - everything is absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately the hotel is a disaster. I don't understand, why it's rated with 4 stars, it doesn't deserve it. Our room was pretty bad: old furniture; loud refrigirator (did you hear starting Boeing 747? Yepp, something like that ), more of that, it can hit you with electricity! The AC works well but it was not cleaned for ages, there was a mold there! The bath room have seen better times: everything is old and rusty.
There were problems with all: power, warm water, wifi (and internet). When we asked the manager about that, she told us, that everything will be fixed soon, but... in most of cases it happened again... and again.. and again.
Ah, the personel. They are pretty tricky there. They smile you, but can bring a rotten seafoods for lunch. Or cheat your child and take his/her money. Or forget to bring your order. But they smile, always.
The Zazibar is the place you have to visit, but stay out of this hotel!!!
