Detailed Reviews
We stayed here for 1 night in late August 2024, bed only, at R850 (2 pax). The village itself is delightful and full of warm, friendly and somewhat quirky residents who instantly made us feel welcome and who clearly go the extra mile to provide delightful hospitality. Unfortunately, we did not feel the same about Die Blou Huis. We were told of many other charming guest houses and farm cottages in the area where we will stay next time.
The property as a whole felt unsightly, squashed and cluttered. It is lacking in charm and warmth of any sort. Our large room contained 3 beds of different sizes with mattresses in various states of decay. It had no ceiling and was dark and freezing. The floor level of the bathroom, also huge and freezing, was easily 30cm below that of the room. It was entered over a rough step that one had to negotiate in the dark, because there was only one light switch, far away at the entrance to the room, which controlled each of the two bulbs hanging naked in the bedroom and bathroom simultaneously. The bathroom door could not be closed as it had slipped off its rollers. The three liquid soap/shampoo containers were empty.
The shower was tiled in very slippery tiles and the drain was at least 20 cm below the shower floor level; if one tripped over that, one could easily break one's neck.
The room was filled with all kinds of clutter, including a vintage organ! Why this needs to be stored in a guest room is a mystery. No where else to keep it?
I appreciate that this was very cheap accommodation and that one cannot for that price expect any luxury. But reasonable functionality is essential in any sort of guest house. This accommodation is not fit to be sold. I can't speak for the camping (which the first 2 reviews highly praise). My advice would be to stick to that option.

Funky Camping site in the centre of Nieuwoudtville. The ablutions were extremely well laid out and appointed. On the premises you will not want for anything - there are outside covered areas with a large TV screen, a cozy pub and a restaurant area with a second TV screen. The pizzas we ordered were out of this world, so good. Johan, the owner went out if his way to accommodate us in a very busy period, for which we are very grateful.

Die Blou Huis A caravan park with add on "guest blocks"
We stayed there at the end of August during some very rainy and cold weather, below freezing at night. We were lodged in 2 guest blocks (one/couple). Huge rooms with multiple beds, poor mattresses, a variety of sheets and blankets and no heat. Thankful for the electric blankets. The lighting was poor and there was no hot water available in the ensuite cement block style shower. Very little water pressure or water. No hand soap or shampoo supplied; we had our own. The rooms were not very clean but the bedding was. Really quirky décor in the lodging, around the grounds and in the little café on site.
There is a narrow bridge across a creek from the caravan park to the guest blocks with poor lighting at night, so it is helpful to have headlamps or torches. The owner Johan and his staff are friendly and as accommodating as possible. At the café we enjoyed a simple breakfast with very good Roosterkoek. Dinners are basic pizza which are adequate. There are more interesting restaurants in town and probably much better lodging. We stayed here because our original lodging went out of business, and we didn’t have much to choose from at the last minute.
We will not stay there again but we love telling stories about our stay at this place, a step up from camping in a tent, we stayed dry, the rain during the night was relentless and the wind feral!

Room Tip:Â I don't recommend lodging here, I think the caravan park for this place receives better reviews.

We loved this campsite in the center of Niewoudtville! It has got loads of character that fits perfectly into this part of the world. All facilities were spotless and in good condition. Plenty of hot water and very good shower. There is so much to look at, so much creativity. It was very quiet (out of season) and we felt very safe. Such an unusual place so that we decided to extend our stay by another night. This must be the best campsite in this little village and they also offer self catering accommodation.
