If you're staying in South Lake Tahoe in the summer (winter is different) and want a condo or house, it's hard to beat The Tahoe Keys. This is a large waterfront community with small, finger-like lagoons allowing homes to be on the water with their own boat docks. There are hundreds of condos and homes rented here, ranging from $125 per night to $2,000+ per night. Quality varies dramatically, but homes tend to have nicer views and backyards than condos. We have stayed here for six years, two or three times a year. Best selection is from tahoevacationguide.com.
They have an office in the Keys and are AAA-approved.
We call this "suburbia on the lake" because many of the homes look like they belong in a Southern California development, not at Tahoe. If you're looking for tall pines and seclusion, this is not it! Close to restaurants, shops, boat rentals and other tourism necessities, it is a very convenient place to stay in the summer. Many expensive rentals at Tahoe are quite isolated around the lake, and getting to a restaurant or grocery store can be a 15 minute drive -- not at the Keys. If you're bringing a trailer boat, this is the best possible location -- nearby launch ramp, marina, and the boat in your own back yard! About winter -- same place, but no ski atmosphere. Heavenly is about a 10-20 minute drive, depending on snow and traffic. Have fun!

Our family vacations at Lake Tahoe frequently since it is so close to the SF Bay Area. We discovered Tahoe Keys Resort several years ago and fell in love with the waterfront homes. We bring our boat up in the summer and park it right behind the rental house or condo. We have rented both the condos and houses and found them to be an excellent value for the money. it beats the heck out of a hotel room--kitchen, livingroom, fireplace, backyard for the kids, views. The front desk people at Tahoe Keys Resort are exceptionally knowledgeable about the area and are very friendly & courteous. Any problems at the rental we have reported have always been taken care for promptly by their staff. There are some minimal fees for use of the pools & tennis courts which are part of the homeowners' association but Tahoe Keys Resort provides free use of a great health club right on site. We also like it in the winter time because it has great sun expoure and the streets are virtually dry and free of ice unlike the rest of town so the driving and walking is easy.
Elizabeth and I both highly recommend this vacation rental company, I understand that they are the only AAA approved company at Lake Tahoe. We are seriously thinking about buying a home at Lake Tahoe and having them manage it.

I recently stayed at the Tahoe Keys Resort in South Lake Tahoe. We loved the ability to take our dog along for the trip as some of their places allow pets. The service was incredible - very friendly.
It is different from motels as they break out charges such as housekeeping but still very economical. We are planning another trip - and this time staying in a cabin with a hot tub.

I have booked many times with Tahoe Keys Resort the last few years, and we booked 1870 Bella Coola Drive this past weekend. Family 4 with 2 kids under 5. This house had no WiFi!! And when we would re-boot the router, etc. it would come on for 20min and then out for rest of the day/night. Now mind you we have kids with us, and I was working from home Thurs/Fri. and we were there until Sunday. After calling the office and complaining numerous times, and them contacting the service provider, there was nothing the did to fix this. They could have come out to see what was going on, or the owner needs a new service provider that has working WiFi. I was also told to not use tablets for kids or Xbox for them. How in the world can we be on a min stay-cation with kids and not have them watch anything?!?! Makes no sense. What they need to tell you before you book is that the WiFi does not work. We paid $800, and worst place to stay at. The house is big and great size for families, but if you are ok with NO WiFi the entire stay, then this is the place for you!

While the resort was in a nice area, I was highly disappointed by the way they hide charges. We stayed in a one-bedroom condo and we're told what our nightly rate would be and what was included. After price-comparing the condo to other places in the area and passing up the opportunity to stay at a comparable location, I discovered that there was a $50 cleaning fee and an extra booking fee added to the nightly rate. By then, the other places I had called were booked up. When we arrived, the amenities that they told us were available, like the exercise room and hot tub, came with an extra fee as well. Buyer Beware!!!!

As for our condo, it was more spacious than a hotel and it was nice to have a kitchenette. However, with the cleaning fees that they charge, I would have expected our towels to not have the disgusting stains that they did and for the plates, glasses and utensils to be clean. The bed was uncomfortable and the furnace in the place was broken so that it was 80 degrees in there and we couldn't cool off without opening the doors and windows. In hindsight, I would have made a decision to stay elsewhere.

We have stayed at Tahoe Keys over 3 times, and each time has been a wonderful and relaxing experience. We had free access to the lake and no additional fees for parking. However, I am very displeased to note that this more recent trip we took has been a unpleasant experience. When we arrived to the vacation rental we were promised a full lake view, I can assure you the cabin we received was a partial view of just the marina. The rooms themselves were spacious and warm but when we tried to use the pots and pans provided in the kitchen, most of the pans had food and grime left over. I should also note that we came at a time when it was raining through the duration of the 2 afternoons we spent at the cabin. The TVs that were provided for us 4 in a 3 story cabin were not working ! We called management and even went to the lobby to ask them to help, and nothing was done. Now if this would have been in the summer when we didn't spend as much time in the cabin this would not be so bad, but it was raining and so we all thought we could watch tv to pass the time . If there's one thing I've learned is the best thing about any resort hotel or vacation rental is that if the customer service is bad, well you might as well expect your stay to be , just as bad. And to top it all off, we had to actually pay to see the Lake, don't get me wrong but isn't it called "lake" Tahoe ?? That was by far utterly disappointing f . I mean we came to see a view like we had been doing for the last 3 times we visited and now we have to pay a fee to see the actual Lake?? It is more disappointing than it is angering because we have always&forever loved this place and it does not seem right for us to go through such a horrid experience in a place we admire so greatly. We payed enough money to stay but I mean really a fee to see the Lake? That's just greed . We found public beaches near Tahoe Keys that offers free parking and better views anyways but wow... Really disappointed with the service that was offered to us, it is truly offensive to be quite honest . Will most likely be our last stay here at Tahoe Keys.

The Tahoe Keys is a waterfront sub-community within South Lake Tahoe.
Although several property management companies rent homes & condos in the Tahoe Keys we recommend Tahoe Keys Resort, Inc./Lake Tahoe Reservation Bureau as it is the only one which is AAA approved. The staff is friendly and fully informed us of all the amenities and charges involved with our reservation. They have their own maintenance and housekeeping staff which were promptly dispatched the two times we needed them. The homes and condos we have stayed in were all clean, well maintained and stocked with clean linen. We have stayed with Tahoe Keys Resort at least 8 times in the past 4 years both in the Tahoe Keys as well as in homes they manage near Heavenly Ski Resort. As family vacations go staying in a home or a condo has been great for our family, and we highly recommend this management company and the properties we have stayed in. Al & Kris

We recently visited this condo (Unit 160A)in the Tahoe Keys and had a wonderful relaxing family vacation. The owner, obviously, has provided many personal family touches to this unit. Everything was functional (heater, stove, oven, refrig, washer & dryer) which eliminated any frustration, which was just what we wanted and needed). The queen bed in the bedroom was very comfortable and felt like new (not the "used motel" feel). The decor is delightfully mountain and there are many amenities in the unit that a family can enjoy. We made great use of the entertainment center which is stocked with movies, games, and video/DVD equipment. There is even a PC computer with color printer. Rather unique for a rental condo! The kitchen is cute and small, but well stocked for fixing all our meals. We went as a couple, but with the hide-a-bed, a foursome would truly enjoy their visit. A good price for the location and comforts of home. Shopping, hiking, bike riding are within a 10 minute drive. I'm looking forward to my next visit! (The boat dock and sailing was great too!)

While most every listing from properties in Tahoe Keys reads that beach access and pool access are "included" they aren't. The fee to use these facilities is $7 per day/per person. With the beach and pool being the main selling points, we have 9 people in our family so $63 per day x 7 days so an additional $441 in unexpected fees. We would have gone somewhere else.

On the upside, our place was nice and Tahoe Keys is a nice area. BBQ wasn't clean and the pans were not totally clean but that wasn't a big deal to us.

We rented a condo overlooking the Tahoe Keys Marina at 477 Ala Wai, Unit 90. I tried to write a review on the condo itself but Trip Advisor has not added it yet. First our experience with Tahoe Keys Resort, then the condo itself. We arrived to the office after an 8 hour drive and were told we needed to give them a $500. security deposit. They said they needed the $500 and will keep it for 7 to 10 days after check out...they said it takes that long for them to contact the local police department to find out if the police were called. huh? So the point is, if the police were called to our property they would keep the $500. Most people probably don't flinch at this and give them a visa card in which they charge the $500. and wait for the credit back. Mind you, the $500. is NOT for damages to the property, but in case the police were called. hummm. Without getting too personal, we were not prepared to pass out $500. for someone to keep for (up to) 10 days. (our fault, I know...but still...Clarity would of been appreciated BEFORE we arrived.) On the tippy top of the contract it says this: (I'll paraphrase a little in some places) "...the following behaviors are {not accepted} participation in any "excessive noise.... yelling, loud music, whistling, singing, loud conversations...etc.. etc.". "will result in the immediate eviction of your party, forfeiture of all funds paid, possible action and or fines by the police or sheriff's Dept., or risk forfeiture of security deposit equivalent to one night stay at your property but not less than a minimum of $500." . AM I WRONG? Does that say anything about: BE PREPARED TO HAND OVER to us $500. AT CHECK IN TIME. WE WILL KEEP IT FOR 10 DAYS AFTER CHECK OUT, OR UNTIL WE CONFIRM WITH THE LOCAL POLICE DEPT THAT THEY WERE NOT CALLED TO YOUR PROPERTY. IF THE POLICE ARE CALLED,WE WILL KEEP YOUR $500. FOREVER. (even though it doesn't cost us a dime to have the police called to your property) Ok, I get it, it's simply not their fault that we were not prepared to hand that (smallish) amount of money over to them.... I'm just saying, their contract is NOT clear and this was a BIG issue for us personally. The manager did work a deal with us, which was nice, but not until I looked at her in the eye and said. "this contract is not clear and we simply DO NOT have what you want." So with that experience in mind...I agree that the lack of clarity and assumed expectation written in their contract would fall into the "incompetent management" category that jarvismb wrote about. I would call it unprofessional ism that tips the scale of deception. .
As for the Property itself at 477 Ala Wai, Unit 90. It was a nice, updated 1 bedroom condo in an excellent location, overlooking the Tahoe marina and came with a boat slip. It was nice to have our boat in the water right outside where we could keep an eye on it. The kitchen was stocked with enough dishes, silverware, a set of teflon pans (yuk)... glad I brought my cast irons!, cutting boards, knives and a couple baking dishes. It lacks a supply of spices and oils, but otherwise was clean and had most of what anyone would need to make up a meal away from home. The condo has a nice outdoor deck with big double sliding doors. It was a quiet neighborhood with a beautiful front lawn area. This was the PROBLEM: this house was HOT! . EVERYTHING was hot. The fridge blew out hot air from underneath, the dishwasher...same thing. Don't leave the light bulbs in the bathrooms on, they put off more heat than a 500 degree oven. The upstairs bedroom was the worst and had no windows to open for air flow. The owners (?) have placed a cheap portable air conditioner in the upstairs closet..(to remedy the heat problem?) ..funny thing... the hose that hooks to the back of it...into the wall...(like a dryer hose) isn't long enough for the air conditioner to be moved out of the closet itself! It was only cool if you stood directly in front of the unit itself. haha...Plus, while it runs, it blows HOT air through the vents of the upstairs half bathroom...like a heater. we found an old broken, dirty "borrowed" box fan and were able utilize it a little.
I guess this place would be ideal in the winter time, renters would be nice and cozy warm.... but for the summer... I'm not sure I would rent this place again. We still had fun on the beautiful lake everyday, which is really the point right? See you next time Lake Tahoe.
