We have just spent the long weekend at Strathbreede House. The house is fabulous for a large group and is exactly as described on the website. The cottage is really just an outbuilding with an additional 2 rooms and small kitchen and eating area. It has no lounge and only one bathroom which has no door and is off the main bedroom. We hired both the house and cottage and I would suggest that this is the only way to hire this accommodation. The adults in the second bedroom of the cottage had to use the bathrooms in the main house. ( we were not aware of this set up before went.) our disappointment was not in the house but in the misleading information about this being a “working farm”- under activities on the website the owner speaks about hiking / mountain biking routes and bass fishing that can all be enjoyed on the farm. However this is not a farm and none of those activities were available. We had emailed the owner twice as we were a group of 12 adults and only one child who has a passion for fishing so we wanted to make sure that we could fish on the farm. We were assured of all the activities but sadly they don’t exist and none of the photos on the website were taken on this property. As I also rent out properties I decided to email the owner on our return home to give her feedback and awaited her response. Sadly they chose not to address my email and appear to have blocked my number.

It was our dad's 90th birthday weekend and unfortunately we had a similar bad experience to some of the reviews already posted here.
I can confirm -
Misleading and poor communication (no trails to walk or bike, and definitely no dam to fish in)
Very little water pressure to no water at all for showering in the main house
Only one toilet in the cottage - off the main bedroom, so only really suitable for a single family, not friends.
Not enough fridges for 12 adults (let alone 24!!)
Cockroaches in the cottage
and, a really unreasonable Sunday checkout time of 10am - given that there were no new guests after us.

The accommodation was decidedly average but I won't go into the specifics, it was more about the owner's attitude.
She was pleasant enough when we made the booking and paid the deposit 2 months in advance, but became quite irritable as things progressed. She demanded full upfront payment of the balance 30 business days before the arrival date with a "no refund" cancellation policy, only an option to postpone.
Then just before our weekend we were sent a long message telling us not to steal things from the house, and instructing us to communicate only with the farmworker/caretaker couple who stay on the farm and not to contact her with questions. Which we made the mistake of doing once, on the afternoon of our arrival.
The thing was that the farmworkers didn't answer their phone and when approaching the male worker on the property, I realised that he didn't speak English.
Too nervous to contact the grumpy owner again and unable to get hold of the caretakers we just dealt with the issues and, although there were some nice aspects, we won't be going back to the old farmhouse with the framed photo of Verwoed on the wall.

Our huge family group stayed at this accommodation over a weekend in March 2021.

The house is a beautiful old house with stunning wooden floors, and beautiful antique furniture.

However, the house is in a state of neglect and it wasn't properly cleaned before we arrived.

There were cobwebs and spiders in all the bedrooms underneath the washbasins, above the basins, under the beds and under other furniture. We also found cobwebs and spiders in the bathrooms and kitchen. It seemed as if several areas were not dusted before we arrived.

Several windows couldn't open because their mechanisms were broken.

Our bedroom only had sheer curtains that allowed for no privacy. The trellidoor had no locking mechanism, which meant that together with the broken mechanism on our window, we had no way to allow fresh air into the bedroom at night. Two of the three beds in our bedroom had feet that were broken and gave out over the weekend.

The cupboards in one of the bedrooms had a layer of dust on the shelves which rendered them useless. The glass in the panel above the door was broken.

The only cupboards with hanging space were in the hallway, but they were filled with linen, blankets and electric blankets that were stuffed into them. Staying at the house to attend a wedding nearby, we really needed space to hang our clothes.

The washbasins in the bedrooms were in such a rundown state, that nobody wanted to use them.

On a positive side, the beautiful wooden floors were clean and polished. The swimming pool was a great bonus!

This house has huge potential, and must have been a great and stately place in prior years. Unfortunately there really is no excuse for not properly cleaning the house before guests arrive and not fixing broken things.

I booked this venue well in advance, and on our arrival we found that there were no extra blankets on the beds, and no electrical blankets as we were expecting. We literally froze at night, and used the open beds' duvet covers to keep my 80 year old dad warm during the night. It was between 1 and 3 degrees C at night, and raining all night Friday, all day Saturday, and the bigger part of Saturday night.
On top of that we found the house and cottage invested with adult Cockroaches. It was absolutely disgusting. For the price we paid, I expected much more than the run-down farmhouse we got. The bathrooms are old and tacky, and the water supply terrible.
I organized that we have a late departure on the Sunday, seen that the family come from Johannesburg, and we wanted to have lunch there, before we went our separate ways. When I asked, the owner said it would be no problem, seen that there is nobody coming in after us. Then came Sunday, and our arrangement was not standing any more. Now we had to be out by 12h00. And I was invoiced for the extra hours. What was the use to organize to stay late, if it was not going to be honored...
Sorry, but I will not recommend anyone to stay there, we were not impressed, and not at all happy with our stay.

We booked the house and cottage for 11 adults and 4 teenagers last weekend.

What a fantastic experience. From our first enquiry to our final departure, all communication was excellent.

The house is really lovely and has everything you need, and plenty of space.

We found lots to do in the area.

Highly recommend this property.

Lovely holiday house very big , clean an fully equipped. We were allowed to take the dogs with, the place is very secured and the children had a ball in the pool which is on the patio. We will definitely be back there again. I recommend this place to anyone who is wanting to go on a family holiday as it sleeps up to 12 people and pet friendly. Only thing i would ask the owner to do is build a braai near the pool so that when you baaing in the day you can still watch the children swimming
