Some colleagues and I chose Fanta's Folly for a mid-term teaching break. It was exactly what we wanted and expected.
The accommodation is not 5 star, by a long shot. You get, however, a rustic wooden bungalow that is right on the beach. I had my own bathroom/shower where everything was clean and worked. I had a comfortable bed with ample shelving and cupboard space to pack away my goods. A bonus in the rooms is the awesome African art that is displayed. Carved cupboard doors, masks and other artifacts that are displayed in the rooms are for sale (if you are able to twist the owner's arm!) Outside I had a balcony and a lounger to lay on and peruse the spectacular beach that I could almost dip my toes into.
The owners were friendly and welcoming, but gave you your space. The meals we ate from their kitchen were tasty and well-presented. The bar had the basics, but the owner is willing to stock up with your preference, in advance.
The beach, at times, was a little dirty (bits of fishing net, plastic etc) but the owner made a concerted effort to clean it up and it is a glorious stretch to walk along to visit the fishing villages around each bend. The water was an awesome temperature and the waves were glorious, but not for the fainthearted.
If you want solitude, silence, good food and the beach at an affordable price, this is it!

Fanta's Folly is located by a wonderfully serene and clean beach surounded by palm trees.
The bungalows are clean, spacious and beautifully decorated.
The service here is outstanding and the food is great (more like international and not so much Ghanaian). Breakfast is good, they have nice snacks and super tasty dinner options.
I can fully recommend this place, it's been the nicest accommodation we've stayed at all over Ghana.

Fanta's is, without doubt, consistently the best beach resort in the Western Region. We've been visiting for three years, often with visiting friends and relatives in tow, and it never disappoints.
Fanta and Philippe are great hosts who've designed the bungalows with real flair and creativity. The food is excellent - French and African-influenced dishes including delicious fish carpaccio, spicy fisherman's soup, potato roesti and even tarte flambée cooked in their custom-made oven. You can also get a mean mojito in the Bottleneck Bar!
Butre Beach is stunning. Sure the Atlantic waves can be pretty big and strong but even if it's not suitable for a dip there are great walks in either direction. Turn right and a 20-30 min stroll takes you to Butre village where you can scramble up to the ruins of Fort Battenstein built by the Dutch around 1600 for trading and slaving. The view is fantastic. En route to Butre you may well see a massive fishing net being pulled up onto the sands by the village closest to Fanta's. The entire village, from small kids up, is involved. You can even lend a hand and realise how puny you are in comparison! Fascinating to see what fish turn up in the catch if you're there when the net gets to the beach.
Turn left instead and in about 15 mins you reach a rocky promontory from which you can see Takoradi in the distance one way and Cape Three Points in the other, if the day is clear, as the waves crash and splash at your feet.
You can drive to Fanta's in less than an hour from Takoradi. Once you're off the main road it's an interesting trip through bush, oil palm plantations and small villages. The road's pretty narrow in places and there's some potholes but nothing compared with many of the roads around here.
From around August through to April, especially October-December, turtles lay their eggs on the beach. Fanta's Folly is involved in turtle conservation and, if you time it right, you can see the baby hatchlings make their dash for the ocean. Whales also pass by between August and February so it's worth keeping an eye out for them too.

We contacted Philippe the owner in November about our planned trip in January to ask about their turtle conservation work and about seeing the turtles and had a broad e-mail conversation about this. Our guide book said that turtle nesting lasted from October to March. When we arrived and asked about the turtle experience, Philippe informed us that the season for their breed of turtles ends in December! This was the only reason we had travelled to Fanta's Folly (as there is genuinely nothing else there), so we were obviously extremely disappointed. The accommodation is basic, but clean (no hot water in the shower), although it seriously needs some decorating and maintenance (one of our sun beds was literally falling apart). The food is very good and freshly cooked and the beach side location is amazing. The local town of Butre has nothing of interest and the 'river canoe trip' to see wildlife was a complete rip off, even though Philippe himself booked it for us. The guys took us up the river to show us a lizard on a branch (which they tried to tell us was an alligator) and back in half an hour, which should have been an hour. You cannot walk past Butre to Basua as there are criminals and a tourist had been stabbed 2 weeks before our visit. Philippe is a nice guy and the place is very laid back.

The worst ever customer service I have ever experienced. I checked in, ordered two meals and my wife surprised me with a bottle of wine. I them requested for a glass, which was brought.the manager/owner came to request for 29ghs for bringing my wine in as a guest who is accommodated there. I objected and he poured my wine in the glass away and took his glass. And he told me to check out and leave if I want to and I did just that.

Very terrible services and the owners and staff are very rude.
I checked-in in the morning and I had several issues with my room and when I approached the staff to help solve these issues, they just had to be rude.
I checked-in into a dirty and very dusty room and that’s terrible service.

We've heard good comments from friends long time ago so we decided to try this place for easter and had a bad experience.
They have invested a lot in making it look nice but it was very dirty, the bungalow was very dusty everywhere even in the most visible places....so you can imagine how the corners and under beds were.
The water was on and off and when there was water it came out reddish or brownish so we had to buy water even to wash our hands.
The bedsheets and towels felt pretty sticky and dusty too.
Plus we were with our toodler so we had to be extra careful where she put her hands.

I was in the kitchen by chance and saw the waiters collecting the leftovers of jam and butter and putting them together and back in the fridge.

We've been in very basic places in Ghana but they were very clean so it makes the difference.

Food and restaurant service was good though and the waiters were super nice although they seem to work from early morning to late night. Not sure if I have eaten any leftovers but taste was good.

While checking out I politely told the lady in charge of the place my views ...I started with the positives and then moved to suggest to clean the rooms better, I also mentioned the butter and jam leftovers and she said that they were used for cooking, (clarifying at a later stage that what she meant was that they are used to cook for themselves not for the clients....)
She also called the cleaning lady and started shouting at her in front of me...and then she decided to be rude to me too as she didn't like my comments. I tried to explain that I'm just trying to give feedback so she improves her business and keep clients happy so they recommend it to others and are willing to come back but obviously the client-oriented idea was not understood. She thought I was criticizing the place.
And last but not least while we were boarding the car she approched my husband to complain about my comments and to ask what he thinks about what I say....obviously his answer was " we stayed in the same room so whatever she tells you this is what we both think". Such an attitude offended me as a woman especially coming from another woman who runs such a business so I told her that in my family men and women have the same rights thus I don't need my husband's approval to open my mouth and that she should feel ashamed of asking such question. Probably if this is how things work for her I should have called her husband but I respect her role as manager-in-charge and more importantly as woman. So that was it!!!

Definitely not going back and not recommending it to anyone, especially if you are going with children.

Nice location..... thats about it.

The rooms were SO DAMP. SO damp. All out stuff was ruined after two nights there.
You can't swim in the sea, and theres nothing to do.... even a ball would have been great!
The food was poor, tiny portions and no flexibility.
If you stay here, go to hideout lodge to eat and get some life!

After a long journey from Accra we were ready to relax and enjoy a stay on the beach..... oh dear. Someone had decided to cancel our confirmed booking without any form of notification, a little distressing, but what followed was frankly shocking and unprofessional. The owner was extremely unhelpful - no offer to help find alternative accommodation and no apologies - instead he became rude and abusive. This is one resort in Ghana we have no intention of returning to unless an "Under New Management" sign is firmly affixed to the sign board.
