We booked (and paid for) an overnight stay well in advance. We would stay there on a Sunday night and took the trouble to find out in advance whether there would be a restaurant open in town. The owner, Koeks, reverted and confirmed that a specific restaurant would be open for us.

We had a long day's travel and looked forward to a hearty dinner since we had no other food with us.

Upon arrival, Koeks did not receive us. The lady in reception was unfriendly and distant. We asked about the restaurant and she simply said she didn't think there was an open restaurant in town. She didn't engage with us about it at all and was clearly not interested to find out whether we would have food at all. We ended up without dinner that night, and our host (or the "acting host" for the day) was not interested in our problem at all.

We stayed in the Stoepkamer, which was very cosy and very comfortable. It has a beautiful bathroom and some old bedroom furniture which we really loved. It is also spacious and private. So we sat on the stoep (verandah) drinking a cold drink and eating a packet of potato crisps that we had bought at the only open shop in town, when the chimney across the street suddenly started billowing out black smoke from a coal stove that the residents must have lit. We had to flee inside and ensured the door and windows were thoroughly closed to avoid our room to be filled with the smoke. The chimney is clearly not of legal height.

The last time I was in Victoria West was 10 years ago. The place has really deteriorated since then. Instead of 3 or 4 fuel garages in the main street, there is now only one small fuel garage in a side street. Several houses and former guest houses are no longer in use. And - no restaurant open on a Sunday evening at 18:00. Not even a take away joint. On my next trip, I would rather head for Britstown to stay over.

The Pophuis Hoekie guest house is beautifully appointed and owner Koeks seems to be a loveable and friendly person. However, her stand-in is not. A somewhat more robust dinner arrangement with a local restaurant for her pre-booked guests (who had paid upfront and would be sure to arrive!) would have gone a long way to make our stay there a pleasant one.

What a divine little spot. We only spent an overnight stay on a trip to Joburg. It was clean and tidy. Very nice linen and decor. Hot blankets a huge bonus for all beds on such a cold night. We arrived late and keys were arrange and secure parking for the car and trailer. Overall definitely will stay again on next through trip

Great and friendly service. Good sleep, good eat and fresh air. Would recomend it 100 times over. We were 2 couples with seperate bathrooms and stayed in Kardoesie. Clean and neat. The town is clean and quiet. Great halfway stop from George to Kimberly.

When you have to stay in Victoria West this should be your choice! The place was immaculately clean, warm, uniquely decorated and the perfect place for an overnight stay! Price is very reasonable and they go out of their way to help! Don't even think of overnighting at another place! You will love Koeks and her crew!

What an absolute pleasure to have stayed here... friendly service, clean and spacious facilities, security guarding the vehicles and had no problems arriving late at night! Would not have minded to have decent coffee in the morning though...

Perfectly located, off the main road, perfect overnight accommodation between Gauteng and Cape Town. Rooms are well equipped and comfortable. As a family of 4 we enjoyed a large unit. Close to awesome restaurant Ka'Roux.

Perfect stop for a night, or even a short stay if you need to be based in the area. Koeks is a wonderful hostess, friendly, welcoming and full of suggestions as to what to find in tiny Victoria West.
Rooms delivered exactly what was on offer. Peace, quiet and a good night's sleep. Look no further for somewhere to stay. Highly recommended.

We went to a funeral in Middelburg and on our way back, wanted to stay over. We booked at "Die Pophuis Hoekie". What a lovely lady with the most interesting guest chalets. It is self-catering and consists of an open-plan kitchen and lounge, separate bedroom and en-suite bathroom. Very clean and has the most beautiful old furniture. That night we could braai in front of our chalet and enjoy the fresh air. Although Victoria West itself was a bit of an eye sore, we traveled through Loxton the next day and was really surprised by its beauty.
