Detailed Reviews
What an unexpected gem of a place. I can imagine that as a backpacker or with a group of mates that this is the kind of place that you remember for years to come. The bar/lounge area was great. A cold beer after a long trip though was just the ticket. Everyone was friendly, and the chilled atmosphere made me feel as if I was in someone's living room rather than a hostel.
I was told that the room that I got had the best view, and they weren't lying! The room was clean and comfortable, and after a long drive I had no trouble falling asleep between the crisp sheets.
I wish I didn't have to leave so early, I was hoping to get in a surf and some Yoga. I guess that for when I go back!

I LOVED this hostel!
Incredible location - you couldn't be closer to the ocean and with a front balcony to watch / check the surf, it's a surfer's dream.
Doug the manager, and the whole team made me feel at home straight away and like family by the end of my stay. The team are definitely the heart of the hostel, creating a really friendly and warm vibe. I didn't want to leave! I'm definitely going to be back and staying for much longer next time.
The hostel is kept super clean, it's got all the facilities you could ask for, and the security is great. Fingerprint scan to open the gates, I've never felt so Bond ;-)

I would like to thank african soul surfers for an awesome stay. We booked a bit late but u were able to accommodate us. The stay was unbelievable and the view was breathtaking. It is beyond chilled if you are looking for that kinda vibe. I even decided after leaving that I should put surfing on my bucket list. Thank you so much for your warm welcome. We as a group would definitely recommend this place to anyone that enjoys the sea. Thank you again....

We stayed with 3 people in the hostel. We cannot understand why this hostel got such good recommodation on the internet. The price is too high for the quality of the rooms. Furtermore it was dirty (especially the bathroom). We didn't feel weel at our stay.

I spent a period at this backpacker thinking it would be the break I needed right on the beach but also close enough to reach other areas of Cape Town easily. This place is accurately right on the beachfront with many wonderful coffee shops and restaurants on it's doorstep and probably the only reason I will return to Muizenberg again. I was mislead completely by the website to begin with as the pictures they have are nothing what this place is like in reality. I have never in my many years of travel experienced a set up like this and was absolutely disgusted by much of the 'ongoings' and how the place is run. At times there were more staff or volunteers meandering about than guests. I appreciate the good life and what the coast has to offer but the 'surf' appeal of the place stretches beyond just the love of surfing and a 'chilled' love of nature. The staff are generally either smoking up a weed storm or drinking amongst themselves or guests or both. I am not by any means against people having a good time but the running of this place is completely unprofessional...a real circus. One does not expect to come across a used condom on the floor of the lounge while you try relax with a mag on the couch. Totally unacceptable in my view but this sort of thing seems to be the 'norm' at African Soul Surfer as I soon got to find out. The young lady on the switch board taking calls (Tarrin ?) should not be in a position like this at all as she has zero idea about people skills and more interested in her volunteer boyfriend looking the part as coffee maker in the so-called bar area. The place is somewhere one should not visit if suffering from depression as once you walk up the stairs, the building itself will engulf you with gloominess. I do give Jamie (apparently the owner) his due as he is trying hard to achieve the colourful surfer friendly / peace loving image. But I'm afraid that this place does just not have what it takes to make you feel like you want to relive the experience. Rather head up the east coast for a breath of fresh air in true style! This kind of accommodation does not do 'African' and the 'soul of the surfer' image any justice in my view :-( Good Luck! Note: If you do have to stay at this backpacker and enjoy their vibe, be warned that you may be asked to leave if a large group of people are needing accommodation and you are taking up a bed.

Wow, what shocking review Nandi / Dunz. I am utterly gobsmacked that you would post such a horror story when you seemed to have such a great, long, multiple stay with us. If the place was so awful, why did you extend your stay 4 times, surely you would go elsewhere if it was so terrible? No, the real reason you posted this dirty review was because you did not book ahead, rather waiting till your last day each time to then ask for another week. When we had a group booking come-in last minute that made it not possible for you to extend the 5th time, you threw your toys, threatened us with a bad review, and here it is. Childish, and unprofessional. I'm just so glad TripAdvisor allows owners to respond. Taryn is doing a great job as Manager, and yes Simon her BF is a good looking chap, he makes a pretty darn good coffee too (which you had no problem indulging in daily with a smile?) Next time you are feeling depressed please rather take a Xanax, go for a stroll in the fresh air, and consider the ramifications before making permanent, negative stories up that affect peoples livelihood.

Here's the scoop.. If you're looking to chill out, enjoy a beautiful view, surf, and relax in a nice quite town - this is the spot. Loaded with travelers of all kinds, you'll find you and old coming together for a common purpose - surf some fun waves in a beautiful location. The staff here is very friendly and if you take the time to get to know them, they will give you great insight into the area. Doug and Maise were 2 employees that work reception. I can't say enough nice things about them both. Doug is sooo chill and completely into the local scene. He loves the water, the community, and one of the friendliest guys i've met. Maise is a rockstar! Friendly, helpful, informative, and genuine. Both are wonderful people and made me feel at home. They'll do whatever they can to help you with whatever problem you might have. And if you can find a problem here, you're at the wrong place! :)
The location is sick! Right not he beach with an amazing view of the water and overall scene on the beach. Wake up in the morning, grab a coffee at the cool little coffee shop, and enjoy the view. Finish coffee and surf!! I highly recommend the place if you want to meet new, interesting people and enjoy the beach.

the view - amazing - from nearly each room and the large balcony from the kitchen you have a perfect view to the beach. So - in the morning you take it easy for breakfast, look at the waves and then decide what to do - surf or relax.
The rooms and bathrooms are clean and nice. The hostel is colourful with paintings on the walls. Somebody did think in details here. Very relaxed atmosphere. And they offer greatsurflessons as well.

I had a lovely stay at African Soul Surfer! The food and drinks in the café are delicious and you can sit on the balcony overlooking the beach. This was especially nice for me as a solo traveller because there was always someone out there to have a chat with - and if not, it was super relaxing to just sit out there and watch the surfers.
The staff were all lovely and I managed to improve my surfing a lot.
Two things that could be improved:
The yoga schedule wasn’t quite clear which meant I missed two classes that took place earlier than expected.
The dorms are a bit small which means it feels a bit cramped, especially if you’re traveling with way too much luggage like I was.
Stayed in a private room for two nights which was lovely!

The staff here are really great, it's like being part of a family. The location is great for surfing as you are almost right on the beach. The only thing that I would have liked to see more of is group activities, especially for solo travellers.

Stayed here for 5 nights doing the surf and yoga package in a double ensuite room.
Room number 1 was clean, large, with two windows with great views and a shower and sink. However, no toilet. which is fine as the communal toilets were fine. Not sure if this is made clear at the time of booking though and to market it as an ensuite is slightly misleading.
Location is hard to beat right in surfer's corner with the surf out front. Good selection of boards.
Lessons with Doug were good, he's friendly and helpful but was stretched a bit thin by having complete beginners in the group as well as more experienced surfers who wanted to go out back.
There's another instructor who does friday-sunday, I only really had half a session with him but he seemed a little less interested. And that was his demeanour in the mornings when making coffee.
The hostel itself is a nice set up with lots of places to sit and chill, a great balcony to watch the surfing, pool room, atm and organised events like beer pong, movie nights, live music acts.
Issues that need rectifying:
- Lots of non-guests who hang around playing pool and smoking a lot of weed. In the evenings plenty of high people who don't stay at the hostel. The same people you see by the tramline loitering and dealing.
- Need more than two showers for post-surf. Due to the policy of not allowing wetsuits upstairs in the accommodation area, everyone has to use the two showers near the board room. which is fine when there aren't many surfers, but there was a group of 19 surfers and when everyone finishes their session at the same time, it's a long wait.
- I think it's worthwhile letting guests know when they book if you are having a large group staying (a group of 19 from ticket to ride plus instructors arrived half way through my stay). It can be really noisy with long waits for breakfast and may be a factor for some people in deciding to stay here. Although it does mean more people to meet and a more sociable atmosphere.
- When waves are small, a lot of surf camps will arrange for lessons to be done somewhere else where the waves are (like the ticket to ride group). There did not seem to be any better provision for this.
Overall I had a great time and met some awesome people. Waves were good for long boarding and focusing on technique. Geoff, Trevor and Doug are dedicated. Some of the others are a little too focused on their own surfing and getting high. Special mention to the ladies who make breakfast for everyone, it's a mammoth task and they do some of the best breakfasts I've ever had at a hostel.
