We really enjoyed our 8 nights at Fumba Beach Lodge, following a two week safari in Kenya and Tanzania. We loved the location, the privacy in the individual lodges and the many comfortable places to sit and chill. The food was excellent with good menu choices, large portions very nicely presented. All the staff were lovely, friendly and welcoming and the Manager, Sharon checked on guests daily to see that everything was good for them. It is a rustic, beachfront place and the bathrooms and pool could do with some updating, which I understand is planned. We liked the contrast to the more ‘corporate’ lodges we stayed in on safari. Our lodge was very clean and the beds very comfortable - there are good mosquito nets put round each evening by the staff who also spray the room. However we didn’t see a single mosquito and the mozzies usually love me, so pleasantly surprised not to get a single bite 😀 We did the lodge’s snorkelling trip through the dive centre and it was well worth slight extra cost - a good boat and the crew ensure you get to the reef ahead of all the crowds that arrive later. The reef is fantastic with masses of fish and you’re given as long as you want to snorkel and enjoy the trip. All in all, a great stay and we would return in a heartbeat.

Thank you Myra and Sid for the review, so happy you enjoyed your stay at Fumba, lovely chatting every evening. As mentioned to you we are going to be starting with the pool in April/May and then moving on to the deluxe bathrooms to be upgraded.

We chose Fumba Beach Lodge as the final stop on our celebration trip of a lifetime. We were on a safari in Tanzania and wanted somewhere to relax after the hectic travel and excitement of this trip. We couldn’t have chosen better.

I’ve read a couple of the reviews and agree with most apart from one whose trip was clearly not what he’d booked. If you are expecting the height of luxury then you’ll be disappointed. What you’ll find is a charming place with wonderful staff who can’t do enough for you. The cottages are clean and comfortable but not luxurious. There’s only a couple of places where you’ll get Wi-Fi which is an issue if you want to make a private call, as some were trying to do. However, it was great to get away from the world for just five days so no problem for us.

The food was really lovely too. Not too much but we’ll cooked and nicely presented. We spent part of the day on a snorkel and bbq organised by the dive shop and loved this too.

The pool is long overdue a refurb which I understand it’s getting and while we were there the sea was too shallow to swim in due to the tides. Probably not an issue at other times.

So yes, it’s not in the top ten but we loved it’s peaceful location and would stay again were we ever to visit Zanzibar again.

We stayed at Fumba for 1 week in mid-March (the start of the rainy season). It is an absolute tropical paradise. The pool and dining area is just beautiful and well kept, you may even find monkeys running around! If it is busier, there are plenty of private seating areas in the trees looking over the beach, and some sunbeds on the beach too. While we were staying at Fumba we were lucky as there were spring tides meaning we were able to swim in the beautifully warm sea early morning and late afternoon / evening (and we could even catch the stunning sunsets from the sea some evenings). However, this varies throughout the year and may limit your opportunities to swim in the sea.

Towards the end of our stay it was quite quiet as the rainy season was starting (it only rained at night however so i wouldnt let this put you off going in march) so the staff set up a couple of surprise romantic private dinners for us on a wooden terrace overlooking the sea with candles etc. Everyone really went over and above for us, were so friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much to ask, which really added to our experience (and memories looking back) of Fumba. The food was absolutely delicious too (a different 3 course menu each night, with a couple of main course options) and we enjoyed the happy hour beers and cocktails at the pool bar each evening.

We also did a version of the ‘blue safari’ through the hotel (they call it picnic excursion with snorkelling), which was a bit more expensive than other operators but soo worth it as you are likely to have a much smaller group vs others, have guided snorkelling and get to have lunch on a stunning private island all to yourself! We drove past where the other blue safari boats were and it was so busy (10+ people on each boat and more than 15 boats on this one small island for lunch vs. 2 of us on a private island for not loads more money). I would 100% say it was worth the extra money.

The only drawbacks from our whole stay was having quite a few small black bugs in our room, which was due to it being the start of the rainy season (this was out of Fumba's control). It was cleaned well every day but there was just a lot of them accumulating all the time. However, for us, since there was a bug net around the bed to keep them out and since we were always out in the day time it didn’t matter too much. However, if this would bother you, i would suggest avoiding this time of year to visit. I would also suggest that for excursions other than the picnic/snorkeling and other water sports like diving etc., it may cheaper to find local independent companies offering the same tours (e.g. prison island tour) as these experiences do not really differ regardless of operator (from our experience anyway).

Overall, an excellent experience and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful escape in a beautiful tropical setting, plenty of good food and close proximity to explore stone town and nearby islands.

I am very surprised to see the 5* comments about this resort as they don't reflect the reality whatsoever.
Initially, after reading the reviews, my wife and I went to Fumba expecting to have a nice exotic beach holiday. When we arrived at Fumba the disappointing reality kicked in.
Fumba Lodge is located on very small beach strip scattered with big rocks and every 6 hours low tide leaves you with no place to swim or snorkel as the water retracts some 200 meters from the shore and the only things left for you to admire are the locals searching for sea weeds on the ocean floor. However, when eventually the high tide comes in the water is murky (I tried to swim and snorkel - forget about the turquoise Indian ocean color) and full of debris brought in by the tide. There is no way one could say or pretend that this is a snorkeling spot to be enjoyed or a nice location for swimming.
The resort is in desperate need of renovation throughout. The villas are dark inside, to conceal the dated furniture, the bed sheets and pillows are always damp and the bathroom/shower facilities are very basic to say the least.
The breakfast is mediocre and the same is dinner apart of few dishes that were let’s say acceptable.
As a result, all our seven days holiday were spent outside the resort driving around the island looking for nice locations to swim, snorkel and dive trying to make up for the disappointment at Fumba.
I highly recommend going North to Kendwa Beach and surely you won’t be disappointed – the only problem is that if you booked your vacation at Fumba you will need to spend on taxi fares almost the same amount that you initially paid for your holiday as the ride to this exotic part of Zanzibar island is 1h 40 min ride in taxi at a cost of min $100.

Wonderful location and excellent staff taking care of you. Nothing is too much trouble here and, unlike many previous places we had stayed (albeit in Kenya) tipping was left until the end of your stay and put into a tip box at the hotel reception which we were advised was shared out equally between the team.

The service is pretty flawless, the management team are always available to help and they actively seek you out to make sure everything is ok with your stay and check that you are enjoying your experiences, in and out of the resort.

The monkeys are entertaining but do not leave anything around as they are interested in it all.

We had a sea view bungalow which was gorgeous and the ocean is so warm it is fabulous.

Food choice was fairly limited but whatever was on offer was cooked to perfection and always tasty. The chips were particularly nice at lunchtime.

The rooms are large, could do with a mirror in the main room with a good light, but other than that perfect. The ceiling fan was sufficient to keep us cool enough.

There is a dive centre and a spa here, we didn't use either of them but the facilities are available.

Tours to other place on the island can be booked via reception but I would encourage anyone to give Prison Island (never been a prison other than for the current tortoise population) a miss.

Fisherman Tours are excellent and I can highly recommend asking for the driver Said Faki as he was fabulous, friendly and gave us more information about the island and life there than any of the actual tour guides. We specifically asked for him to take us back to the airport at the end of our stay as he was a gentleman, funny and knowledgeable.

There is a small shop but what did annoy me was the price of some Nivea suncream - $38 - same in the UK is around £7. I thought this was extortionate, especially for an essential. Other items were more reasonably priced.

I want to especially mention Stella who worked on the hospitality team, every time you saw her she was smiling and really friendly, what a joy to have around.

We felt safe and well taken care of which is very important.

Asante sana to all of the Team at Fumba.

We spent 7 days at Fumba Beach lodge over December and every minute of it was absolute and sheer pleasure! A family of 5, including 3 kids, we were well looked after and catered for.
Firstly, the resort is located south west of Zanzibar and is absolutely private and quiet, just what we wanted from an Island holiday.
It is a 30 min drive to Stone Town. I would recommend a day tour to Stone Town.
About the resort: It is well kept and clean, lots of greenery and wildlife with the beautiful ocean in front. The rooms are minimal but comfortable.
The facilities are good, there are ample places to find a hammock or swing or bed to enjoy, with good views of the ocean.
The food is great and the staff are simply amazing. So attentive and helpful and very pleasant. A special shout out to Ebrahim, Sabina, Stella & all the fabulous staff in the dining area. The chef and staff were very aware of our dietary requirements and ensured we were catered for, which is really appreciated!
There are activities such as snorkeling, diving and picnic on island, which we did and was great.
The resort has a diving center too.
The resort manager, Louis is a gem and ensured we all were comfortable and well taken care off.
Overall, an amazing stay and I would recommend Fumba beach to anyone wanting to stay in Zanzibar.

Fumba Beach Lodge is the perfect place to unwind & totally relax. We spent 7 nights at this lovely Lodge with the most amazing management & staff who are always friendly & willing to go the extra mile. The Manager Louise went out of her way to make our stay very special & this will be a holiday we will treasure always.
The food is amazing with a lovely breakfast & delicious 4 course meal every evening.
The sundowner cocktails at the Dhow Bar were always a treat together with the resident Bush Baby who popped in to say hello.
Our sea view room was very spacious, clean & had a stunning view of the sea with our own little beach with sun loungers & a thatch umbrella. The outside shower was the best!
Omar & his team at the Dive Centre were amazing & we enjoyed a lovely snorkelling trip together with a seafood barbeque on a beautiful private island.
The ladies at the Spa are wonderful & the hot stone back massage is a must.
Wifi is accessible in 2 places which is perfect for switching off & relaxing.
A perfect place to take beautiful sunset photos & we will definitely be back to visit again.
Thankyou to everyone at Fumba Beach Lodge for making our holiday so special.

I was a little concerned about what I would find at Fumba Beach Lodge, as I normally book places with "more stars". This place is not five star, nor does it claim to be. What it is, is a lovely quiet oasis of calm, that is perfect after racing around on Safari as so many of the guests seem to do before arriving here.
We had one small issue with plumbing in our room (16) whilst there, and it was sorted promptly whilst we went out one day. When the staff probably had more than enough work to do elsewhere tidying up after a storm battering the previous night.
For 5 star, air-conditioning might be required. But the five speed ceiling fan inside the large mozzie night above the bed was good for us. The bedrooms are large, and beach facing ones are unlikely to be more than 20m from the water at high tide.
Food choices are not vast. Two starters, a soup, four mains, and a dessert in the evenings. But it was tasty, and in nice measured portion sizes.
Others have moaned about the tide going out so far, and yes it goes maybe 400yds out. But the lovely well kept swimming pool more than makes up for it. Crystal clear, nice temperature and rarely more than half a dozen people in it.
5-6pm Happy Hour under the huge Baobob Tree was quite popular as the sun started to set, when cocktails are $7 instead of the usual $9. Like minded guests enjoyed a friendly chat whilst having their drink, and most nights were joined by Sharon, the manager, who would take an active interest in how everyone was.
Boat trip picnic and snorkelling was great. You get a smug feeling when you sail past the packed beaches where "tour companies" have sailed multiple boatloads of tourists over, and you chug on to an island where there are maybe only ten people on it.

Ocean facing, tastefully decorated, colonial style eco lodge embedded within a lush tropical forest. We stayed in one of the detached cottages right on the beach. The forest is heaving with energy and life. Monkeys stop by on the porch on their daily trail. It all feels like a safari; a jungle outpost forgotten by the world. It’s a refreshengly quaint retreat recommended to all who seek greater interaction with nature and escape from the city life. Being a long term Dubai resident I really appreciated the peacefulness of this place.

We booked a full board package. Very much recommended as there are no alternative restaurants in the area. The food is great with fish/meat and veggie options. The bar is well stocked. The prices are very affordable so one doesn’t have to worry about the final bill at the check out.

The staff is super friendly. All guests interact and socialise. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy. I loved the absence of the corporate culture (so annoyingly prevalent in the branded resorts). This place is truly authentic. There is nothing fake about it. The place is timeless. I felt as if I was someone’s guest; can’t help thinking I’ve discovered the perfect place to escape to from the dehumanising experiences of city life. We will definitely return later this year. BTW, the place is great for kids. Our 11 year old daughter loved staying there.

My husband and I have holidayed here for the last two years and LOVE it. It’s raining in UK as I write this and all I can think is that, I wish I was at Fumba Beach Lodge. All the staff are most welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. There is a real family atmosphere here and I would describe this hotel as barefoot, shabby chic luxury – not at all corporate and sterile. The rooms are very spacious and spread out in the lovely tropical gardens. They aren’t cheek by jowl like some other hotels. The pool and surrounding area is heavenly with shade under palm trees and full sun for the likes of me – naughty minkies running around and jumping into the fresh towel box, so have your camera ready! In fact there are so many areas where you can really relax and be solitary if you prefer. The spa is really good and last year I had a couple of hot stone massages which was really good but I felt that the spa wasn’t promoted very well, though it meant making an appointment was very easy, so a bonus. We did the snorkelling trip several times on both holidays here and were looked after exceptionally well. It was most enjoyable having a delicious picnic BBQ on one of the islands and fun sailing back, having experienced the beauty of the underwater world. Though possibly a bit more expensive than Blue Safari, infinitely better. I don’t know Blue Safari from personal experience but we met a couple who were dumped a bit further up the coast and made to walk back to the hotel and they didn’t have a very good lunch. Eating under the stars on balmy nights with the twinkling lights of mainland Tanzania far away, was a highlight for us. There are also special places to eat and the staff always make sure you have a romantic night in one of these places. Drinks before dinner at the dhow bar are great and I recommend the Mojito and Dawa. I guess a few more chairs in that area would be nice, as sometimes it gets a bit windy on the lower and upper decks in the old tree, where there is plenty of space. We will DEFINITELY go back to Fumba Beach Lodge, travel permitting and I really hope it is before too long.
