Recently rated as one of the 16 best mountain getaways in South Africa* Wolwekrans, also known as the Jewel of Mpumalanga, is situated in the majestic Schoemanskloof escarpment, with breathtaking 240-degree panoramic views of the Lowveld valley and the Drakens mountains. Wolwekrans is situated on a stunning 120-hectare guest farm. Absolutely perfect for romantic and family getaways. Every chalet has its own private boma, deck, and private area. Wolwekrans is built around seclusion. Where nature meets rustic. We offer 5 rusting fully self-catering chalets/cabins from R1700 - R2500 per night.
Wolwekrans is an absolute hidden gem. Nested in the mountains of Schoemanskloof this lodge really offers a quiet place to relax and unwind. It is completely off the grid. You wouldn't even notice it if you didn't know about it. It's quite high up and therefore not accessible without a proper 4x4 but the caretakers will fetch from the bottom from what I understand. You need to make sure you have everything you need in terms of food and others groceries like charcoal and firewood etc. Because you don't want to be going up and down. It was such a pleasant surprise once up at our chalet (chalet 3). This unit has breathtaking views. Our chalet was a 6 sleeper and there is a smaller one close by (4 sleeper) . Both have spectacular views but I preferred ours. There is also a newish tent (see in pics) which looks lovely. There is a standard sized fridge, braai facilities and a stove. All kitchen cutlery that is needed is provided. There is no microwave and you can't use hair dryers as it's off the grid as mentioned before so no toaster either but this did not bother us. There are some scenic hiking trails and one more challenging one up the mountain. We got there on an overcast and very cold day but it was beautiful being so high up in the clouds. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms are big with views overlooking the mountain. You do need to bring your own bath and swimming towels. There is a swimming pool and braai area for the summer months a little walk away from the chalets. We lit a fire inside every night which created a great ambience you'd expect in the mountains in winter. There is cellphone signal although it comes off and on ,though I suspect that has more to do with loadshedding. Sarah, who helped me with the reservation was really friendly and helpful and answered all my questions. I will definitely recommend this place to friends. …

The drive up to the lodge is challenging and requires a high clearance vehicle with a decent size engine. The views are stunning as are the walks. Do not be fooled by the photos of artistically folded towels on the beds - you have to bring your own bath towels (a 1st for me at any establishment!) The kitchen is described as fully equipped and has an oven - there is a 2 plate gas burner which is too high to comfortably stir anything and no oven. A table and chairs to eat inside would have been a plus when the weather was cold and miserable. The fire place works beautifully, but you'll need to order more wood than you think you'll need (it burns up fast) If we had come with 2 extra guests (the chalet is for 6) we wouldn't have had enough cereal bowls and there are no platters or serving dishes. The location is amazing and Sarah was incredibly helpful when dealing with our questions and queries.…

Our second visit to Wolwekrans was well worth the challenging drive up the mountain. We woke up to the cries of fish eagles, followed by the barking of baboons in the forest below our chalet. The views from the chalet perched on the edge of the mountain high above the forest, is unbelieveable. This hidden gem in Schoemanskloof is the perfect family destination. We heard that guided horse riding trails are planned, which is really great news!

Wolwekrans is truly a special place. Photo's and video's can not do justice to the majestic views and breathtaking athmosphere. You simply have to be there in person to appreciate the impact the mountain has on you. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle with low-range is required to get there. This is a good thing as the pristine environment will be preserved, by keeping the masses away...

Stayed in luxury tent, but had a bad experience. Bathroom did.not work. Toilet flush mechanism out of order and the pipes were blocked. Geyser not working due to blocked pipes, shower head blocked. Had to use a bucket to fill up the cistern. The pure mountain water started out black wit many.solid particles!

If you love being away from the hustle and bustle of the regions tourist traps, this is it. Everything about Wolvekrans shouts rustic, but still being well equipped and spacious. The 8 sleeper chalet 3 we stayed in was really nice, well equipped with an indoor braai and an outdoor fire pit, full kitchen (large fridge, gas stove and kettle, no microwave as all solar). The beds where the best I have come across in a while, really comfy. The bathrooms with their massive windows to the outside was very nice and the living areas are large and have enough seating for everyone. The road to Wolvekrans is a bit of a challenge, best is to drop your tyre pressure and take it slow as you take in the surrounding area an views. Anything less than a proper 4x4 will not make it.Take everything you need for your stay it's not easy to quickly pop out for something. The hikes are also nice, quite short but again really nice. The Mountain Peak hike is a real challenge for all. Well worth the effort! …

We enjoyed a romantic couples weekend away for my birthday in mid winter. The friendly host accompanied us up the rough steep mountain path. Once on top, we could enjoy complete silence and privacy. We also went for a short hike down to the river.

Great tranquil atmosphere and amazing hosts. The Fountain and the Mountain Hike is a must... Our chalet had a beautiful view from the shower with a see-through glass wall. We were lucky enough to see a troop of monkeys but we didn’t see any of the other wild animals. My friends and I had awesome long weekend and will definitely be coming back.

Drive to chalets is strictly AWD and even my X-trail got struck at one place but once we reach top of the mountain it’s a memorable experience. All trails were good. The seating and brai area outside the chalets adds value to the whole experience. The night sky was amazingly bright and kids with us enjoyed it. Overall an memorable trip. Will definitely like it to visit again.
