Our family decided to take a last minute trip to St. Croix After reading various reviews we were hesitant to stay at Carambola and despite some poor reviews we were happily surprised with our suite king with a sofa. The suite was very spacious and quiet. We found the property very luscious and the bar and restaurant had a decent menu. The Sunday buffet breakfast was well done, we enjoyed the Cod fish and both chefs during our stay made the best omelets ! The veggie burgers and Mahi mahi sandwich were great. Kudos to the Food and Beverage manager for his hard work despite the shortage of employees, he worked day and night. During Covid I’m sure they are running a little short with their staff in the dinning room as many other hotels in the US Some improvement needed in some exterior areas however we had a great rate and the value was very good to us. We will definitely come back in the near future.

Hotel's Favourite
The resort is located very privately and secluded on the north side of the island, in itself that makes is heaven on earth to me! Entrance is gated with a guard on duty 24/7 to restrict entrance to guests and authorized parties (and currently is also doing temperature checks on everyone entering in accordance with Covid regulations). Due to its location a rental car is pretty much a must unless you are planning on just hanging out on the resort's beach or are willing to pay the $30 one way taxi fare to get into Christiansted or Frederiksted. Parking is free in the guest parking lot just across from the lobby and within easy, though slightly downward sloping (or upward on your way back to the car) walk on paved walkways that are easily navigated even with luggage or a stroller. It is set right on a wonderful sandy beach with just enough coral and a couple of tide pool areas to make it equally nice for sunseekers as those that like to snorkel and enjoy some sea life... the beach teams with crabs, the tide pools hold urchins, tiny fish and snails, the water teams with tropical fish such as tangs, damsels, angelfish and even stingrays. There are beach chairs available for use (beach towels available at the front desk) and a volleyball net set up for those that like to be a bit more active. And though all beaches on St. Croix are public this beach certainly at least felt private and probably doesn't get much outside traffic due to it's location. There is a hiking trail that leads from the resort up a steep hill through dense foliage (very pretty) to a rocky beach and a set of gorgeous tide pools to the west of the resort... well worth the hike! The 2-story buildings are spread out over beautiful and well maintained resort grounds, providing an open feel with a sense of privacy not often found. Our room was on the ground floor and the patio just steps off the beach... we kept the patio doors wide open day and night to let in the ocean breeze and the sound of the waves, truly exceptional! Inside it was clean and comfortably furnished including a king bed and a separate sitting area (both of which had a TV though other than watching the Bills play on Sunday we didn't turn either one on). There were 6 units in our building (3 ground level, 3 on 2nd floor) and they were so well insulated that we couldn't hear any other guests at all. Due to Covid restrictions housekeeping was reduced to Mondays and Thursdays but if needed fresh towels and/or supplies were available through the front desk. The pool and spa were sparkling clean and set right off the Beach Bar with a gorgeous view of the beach. There were plenty of lounge chairs as well as tables with chairs and umbrellas set around it to offer guests room to sunbathe or even work from their laptops via free WiFi. The Saman restaurant was unfortunately still closed due to renovation, however, a breakfast buffet was available daily and the Flamboyant Lounge & Beach Grill was open daily from 4-9pm. Though it was not a full up restaurant it offered sit down service with a selection of appetizers as well as pizza and a small selection of entrées. Food was good, staff friendly and accommodating giving off a warm island feel and working hard to keep customers satisfied. There was a full bar with a sufficient selection of beer as well as wine, and the mixed drinks were great (the Cruzan Confusion being my favorite). There are several really good/excellent restaurants within a 15 mile radius though a few were closed due to Covid... two are an absolute must for dinner, AMA at Cane Bay (about 2 miles from Carambola) which is right on the beach with the waves literally crashing at your feet) and Savant on a quiet street in Christiansted away from the hustle and bustle (about 12 miles from resort). Both offer an amazing atmosphere and excellent food (fine cuisine) with full bar and ample wine lists. Other great restaurants we tried were The Beach Cafe at Sandcastle, Louie & Nacho's (both on Dorsch Beach Frederiksted), Leatherback Landing (Cane Bay), and The Mill (Christiansted boardwalk)... food and drink as well as service was good at all of them! In conclusion, we were more than happy having chosen the Carambola Resort as our accommodation for our trip to St. Croix. It fit our bill to the T and exceeded our expectations. Is it for everyone? Certainly not if you expect to be in the middle of the action, crammed into a hotel bunker with rows upon rows of multi-level buildings and entertainment presented to you every moment of the day. But should you be like us and seek a tranquil, intimate retreat to just relax, take in the natural beauty of the island and make your own plans, to explore St. Croix as you wish... all at a very very reasonable price... then it doesn't get any better than this!!!

We stayed for a long weekend as a family of three. The King villa was perfect with a King bed & pull out couch. The rooms are nice sized with a full size fridge, microwave, stove top, and dishwasher. The bathroom is huge with a separate sink area from the shower/toilet which makes getting ready easier. The pool area is beautiful and the views from the room are amazing. AC gets plenty cool and the rooms stay comfortable. The balcony/porch is perfect for watching the water and relaxing. Staff is friendly and helpful.

The Carambola Beach Resort is so far off Marriott standard that I really can’t let it go. They are severely understaffed and the ones that do work are apathetic and often rude. Our room was disgusting. Details below. First impression: We had to wade through 2 inches of standing water (which contained pieces of trash) to get into our room. We asked about it later and they said “oh yeah, that just happens when it rains. Nothing we can do about it.” Greasy-looking stains on the sheets & towels, grime & smudges on the windows & furniture, sand in the couch & all over the floor. It was poorly stocked with one roll of toilet paper, and 2 towels for our week’s stay. The few cooking materials & dishes provided (1 pot, 2 plates, 2 butter knives) had grime and dust. The soap and shampoo were leftover from the last people who stayed there, and were watered down. The phone did not work. Our bathroom had one dingy light and the shower was completely dark. After a full day of travel this was super disappointing, so we went to the front desk to ask for our room to be cleaned. We received no apology, only “you’ll have to wait, there’s another room ahead of you.” So we waited over an hour in the heat, at a spot on the resort with benches. We returned to our room to find it untouched, so went back to the front desk and asked when our room would be cleaned. The lady we spoke with didn’t know and clearly didn’t care. We finally ended up with fresh sheets several hours later. I also asked about the phone and she said “oh, we’re taking them all out. Just use your cell phone.” They answered about a quarter of the times we called throughout the week. Our room was at the farthest end of the resort and we had to walk half a mile anytime we needed to speak with them. Housekeeping is supposed to come M/W/F; they failed to show up on Friday and only restocked a few things on Wednesday. They never did clean our floors, we ended up wearing sandals inside at all times. We asked for extra towels one early afternoon and they never put the request in; we had to ask a second and third time, finally receiving the towels at 10pm. The resort is very isolated so the only option for food is the one restaurant. We had many meals there. The food was good but there are not many options, and servers were unfriendly and slow. We waited an hour for one meal before I asked about it; our server stood at the bar and flat out ignored me as I asked if he could check on our food. Finally another server checked for me and our waiter brought us our food - it was cold. I asked for just new fries, saying my husband and I were fine with eating the cold tacos. Our server rolled his eyes, shook his head, took the fries from me angrily and stormed away. We got new fries 20 minutes later, after finishing our other (cold) food. The resort has a very strict pool towel return policy - which would be fine, if there was ever anyone at the pool to accept the returned towels. I think we saw someone manning the stand twice in our entire week. Multiple employees reeked of marijuana and were obviously high. One morning I sat with my coffee on the balcony, enjoying the beach view when a worker came by and completely cut down the healthy, beautiful plant that was providing privacy for our balcony. I have no idea why. We woke up one morning to a 2-inch cockroach dead on our floor. Positive things: The location was gorgeous. The beach has lovely white sand, the ocean provided a peaceful wave noise at night that lulled us to sleep. Our air conditioning worked great. The breakfast food was pretty good and not too expensive. The taxi services that the resort uses are wonderful. All of our drivers were prompt, quick, safe drivers that charged a fair fee. Justin was absolutely amazing, and probably our favorite part of our stay. Victor was great also!

Gorgeous location ruined by what is possibly the worst Marriott I’ve ever stayed at (I’m a titanium member so have experienced my fair share of Starwood/ Marriott properties ) amd definitely the worst “resort” in the Caribbean: - property hasn’t been renovated in what must be at least a couple of decades (e.g. rusted windows and doors that don’t close , sediment / fungus on door handles and fans ,dirty floors, weirdly translusvent pool that you can’t see six inches in etc) - apathetic service - doesn’t seem like anyone cares. Beginning with the glum and unresponsive registration, to housekeeping who couldn’t be bothered to clean a puddle in front of the door inspite of two requests , to the pool staff who chuck chicken wings into bushes and wash their hands off in the pool. - management - spoke to Billy the hotel manager ( btw took 4 requests to the front desk to get him to call me back - 36 hours later) who apologized profusely and promised to call back with an action plan ….. guess what … yep no response At the end my 13 yr old daughter summarized it well …”it’s a shame that such a pretty location has a hotel like this”
