If you have booked a stay with hotel make sure to call and confirm they are still in business and call other local businesses to see if they are really open. My husband booked 9 night stay for Christmas break through Expedia several months ago. We arrived and found the hotel's gate chained off and no one at the hotel. We drove to another hotel and found out that the Riviera hotel has been closed for over a month. We were on the phone with Expedia for over 3 hours to get another hotel booked for us for no extra charge. Expedia tried to call the hotel for hours and no one answered the phone. The Riviera was not supposed to charge our credit card until we arrived but they fully charged our credit card when we booked the hotel then skipped town. We were lucky to have found another hotel to stay because most hotels on the island were completely booked. This was a horrible way to start a vacation but we were lucky to have found another hotel and have Expedia help us.

Our family stayed at The Riviera located in the narrow South Church Street less than a mile from the harbor. The rooms are decent sized with a kitchette that comes in handy in making a quick breakfast. The front-office and house keeping staff are very responsive and great people. This is a resort/inn like place and not a typical hotel, so don't expect the luxuries of a full-scale hotel. Food at the Blue Parrot restaurant at the bar is okay. I liked their conch fritters and rasta pasta. Pool and swim up bar is nice. But I really didn't like the quality of the pool water - it became cloudy when a couple of people entered the pool. The sunset view is awesome! You can see the cruise ships docking and leaving the harbor. There is a dive school and a small dive store in the compound.

We stayed a week at the RGC during low season. The ground level rooms are basic, no frills but comfortable, equipped with a kitchenette. The upper level rooms are one-bedroom apartments with full kitchen, washer/dryer, living room and bedroom. Service was basic but good. The hotel has a swimming pool with pool bar, an adjacent dive center with another bar and a great snorkeling/shore diving area. No (sandy) beach access. The hotel is squeezed between huge fuel tanks which look somewhat ugly but who cares. Located on the main road parallel to the water, under 5 minute drive to downtown and under 10 minutes to the airport.

There's not much in the way of economical lodging in George Town, and that's why we ended up here. For those on a budget, this is one of the few places you'll find, especially this close to "the action". First, the good... Rooms are large, comfortable, very clean and well appointed. A kitchenette with dishes, cookware, a stove and fridge, and all the supplies you'll need is provided. The hotel is in a great location. Dive shop on premises, and you can dive or snorkel right off the back of the property. It's a bit south of the tourist traps, so not overrun with crowds, but close enough to easily access restaurants, shopping, etc. Within walking distance to the south is Smiths Cove, an excellent park to go swimming, relax and snorkel. The bad... The pool was in poor condition, murky and an unappealing green color, with much sediment all over the bottom. Even after the pool cleaners finished their work, I would not enter the water. The property itself appears to be unfinished, with much bare and unkempt ground, a dilapidated ping pong table in the front yard, and right next to the fuel storage facility for the entire island. Not the most attractive surroundings, but that's likely the reason for the more reasonable price for this place. Wi-fi is available but service is spotty. All in all, I would certainly stay there again, but I'm not too picky. If you just want a nice, comfortable room and don't need to be pampered, and don't mind taking a short walk or drive to other facilities, this is a solid choice. Bonus: Staff was nice and polite, and basically left you to yourself after check-in. Manager lives on premises if there's any problems.

The manager, Ryan is awesome! Not only were we able to check-in 3 hours early, Ryan helped us plan an excursion out and recommended an excellent restaurant for dinner. He really went above and beyond to make our stay great! He was professional, efficient, and super friendly. The hotel room was very clean and had a mini kitchenette. The hotel is right on the ocean so we were able to go swimming in a private location. It has a pool and we had access to snorkelling gear. It is also a short walk into town. The rooms have free Wifi.
