On the way to Anegada I called the restaurant at Anegada Reef Hotel and made reservations for our lobster dinner. We arrived in our catamaran and after settling down took a dinghy to the shore. The lobster never tasted this good anywhere else we ate it. You could see on the deck two guys cleaning freshly caught lobster and grilling in big barrel-like grills. Experience not to be missed.
My husband and I just returned from a week long vacation in Anegada. We have been going there for the past 17 years and stayed at the Anegada Reef Hotel every year. The owners, Vivian Wheatley and her 2 children Lawrence and Lorraine, treat us like family and we really feel like we’ve come home when we arrive there. The staff is wonderful - there is nothing like being greeted every morning with a warm and cheerful good morning and a special table that they set up for you in your favorite spot in the beautiful outdoor toes-in-the-sand restaurant with a stunning ocean view. The rooms are simple and perfect and a perfect refuge to return to after a day on the brilliant and beautiful beaches. The food is delicious and the portion sizes generous and you need that after one of those perfect beach days. Harella and Nadia - thank you for being so wonderful and attentive when we needed it! We cant wait to come back next year…
My husband and I stayed one night - I’ve been here several times before with the prior owner / manager - heard current mgt is his first wife. Dinner - ok but staff seemed really uptight. Definitely short pouring at bar. Honor bar not there anymore even if they tell you it is. Service felt forced. Room - to be expected for low/ mid range hotel. Breakfast - had 6 refills of coffee in a small mug. Paid $24 for coffee for the two of us. Asked about it at check out and I was told it was my responsibility to read the fine print at the bottom of the menu- each cup is $3.00. No island vibe there anymore. It’s sad.
As recommended we booked earlier in the day with our meal selections. One lobster, one mahi-mahi and two snappers. On arrival at 7 our table was ready along the railing to the beach, tiki torches glowing. Sounds of waves rolling in next to our table and soft music playing from the bar. Fish portions were quite large and more than usual. Great service. After opening round of drinks, the salad then main course came promptly. In our two week cruise holiday this was definitely a highlight.
Our party of eight ordered lobster and lamb chops. The meals were served with the two side dishes. They were served "family style". There was barely enough for three people let alone eight. They were out of several of the wines on the menu.It took forever to get our entrees. I know they are on "island time" but this was ridiculous. Very under staffed. Th old lady that was running the place had a hard time doing the math and figuring out the checks. This also took forever.....to the frustration of both the customers and the staff. To save their butts they added 18% tip to the check which they didnt deserve. Lesson learned...the hard way.
