It's an easy walk into town where there's a Massy grocery, a small outdoor market by the bus station and the harbor dock.
There's no sign at the entrance so had to ask around to make sure we were in the right place. (We were driving ourselves.) We had a water issue in our room, but the staff was very friendly and did everything they could to make sure our visit was comfortable.
We stayed at the beach resort for three nights, then headed into the hills and stayed on the Plantation for the remainder of our trip. Both had their strong points but we prefered the self-catered option of the Plantation.
*beach resort...
views: brilliant
seafood: brilliant
staff: 50/50 rude/sweet
SCUBA: unmatched (brilliant)
The fact that it's not Castaries: priceless
*plantation resort...
views: nice
food: self-catered
staff: absent (was like a ghost town in the off-season)
accomodations: great - we were pretty much left alone in the place (felt like our own cottage in the Caribean)
5 Soufriere hints:
1). Get out of dodge when the cruise ships come in. They're generally full of yobbish masses who swamp the town and beaches. Not a pretty sight in an otherwise quaint cove.
2). Hike over (or take a water taxi) to Anse Chastonet to see how the other set live. It's morbidly expensive to stay there, but we just used them for their [----] beaches
3). Black-on-White racism exists in it's purest form in Soufriere. Expect insults, slurs, expecially in "town". Let it roll off your back - these jerks spoil it for the overwhelming number of St. Lucians who are kind-hearted and welcome visitors.
4). try scuba-diving (or snorkelling). you'll be rewarded in droves.
5). Skip the dumb, smelly volcano tour.
It is in a beautiful location right on the beach with a view over the Pitons and just on the edge of Soufriere (which is really a village.)
The room was simple and clean with a good private balcony. Breakfast was nicely served, even if the cutlery did not always form a matching set (this is the Caribbean. St Lucia is a poor country. This is authentic.)
The staff were lovely, and kind and helpful. The locals used the beach. It is their beach. They were friendly and are nice people. They do not have easy lives. We have so much more, but we have lost something as well. Porgy organised the trips and acted as my guide. The car was owned by his uncle and driven by his cousin. He took me to the rain forest where he picked a fresh coconut and grapefruit from the trees for me and introduced me to a lovely old man who had nothing, but who had looked after him when he was a child.
The hotel is five minutes walk from Soufriere where there are chickens in the street and authentic Caribbean restaurants. Some days there is a choice of fruit juice. Other days there is not.
If you want a resort with imported sand and pampered, pristine luxury, isolated from the locals, then this hotel is not for you. I wanted a small, simple hotel in a good location away from the manufactured artificiality. This was a very good choice.
We recommend taking a rental car so you can see the other beautiful places.
When I read some of the other reviews, I get the feeling those people are better off in a fancy 5-star all-inclusive resort.
"We had room #5, right on the end with easy access to the stairs to either go up to the car or down to the beach. Room#1 was also amazing as it had a washer in the room, and a very spacious kitchen."Read full review
"Room #5 did not have the best view, but a pleasant one. The issues were: #1: it was very warm in there. The air conditioner did not work, no ceiling fans, one free-standing fan that we could move as needed. But did not spend much time in the room. #2: Being at the far end, there was no through traffic from others staying at the place. However, there was a stairway from the kitchen area below that passed by our room, and also the back side of the resort next door faced this room, with a lot of activity at times. Did not bother us much, but it might others."Read full review
