Dreams Onyx certainly had its pros and cons. The highlight of the trip for me was the decision to upgrade to the preferred guest level giving us access to the preferred pool. This move honestly made my entire vacation. We met the most incredible staff member Neils and she went out of her way to make our week extra special. If I had not been given the luxury of Nelis taking care of us all week it honestly would make this a completely different review. She was fantastic. Unfortunately, everyone in my group got very sick and had bad stomach illness that lasted the duration of the trip and also after returning home. I can only assume it was from the water which made me very nervous to drink anything from the bar because of the ice. This was a big disappointment. The food was sub par but the service was very nice. Room service was beyond slow. They would say 45 minutes to an hour but it was more like 2.5 hours. More than once we ordered fruit plates to have before dinner but they took so long we had to leave for our reservation before ever seeing the room service delivered. Rooms were nice and clean. Resort is beautiful and well kept. Signage would be nice as it is a little difficult to find your way around. I definitely recommend the preferred areas and if you go, ask for Nelis. She is above and beyond wonderful.

The resort facilities and the staff are awesome at Dreams Onyx. We purchased the Preferred Club membership while we were there and the staff at the Preferred pool was fantastic. Nelis was our primary bartender in Preferred and was an absolute delight. She helped us find things on the resort, was speedy and so friendly. She went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. My only slight complaint was that we did end up with stomach issues halfway through the trip. I don't know what in particular caused it, but we switched over to only bottled water for the remainder of the trip and that seemed to help most of us. Otherwise, this was a beautiful resort to stay at and I will definitely be back next time I'm in the DR.

Ok, folks. Here’s our review of Dreams Onyx, which we just spent 9 days at! *No masks or testing is required at all at this point in the DR unpon arrival or anywhere that we saw. We did carry our vaccine cards with us, in case of random testing. Make sure to have the customs QR code filled out for arrival AND departure. Your airline should send a reminder about it. While the majority of things at resort were ok, we did have a few incidents to name. We had three groups traveling; myself and my fiancé and children, my parents, and my future in laws. My group arrived first, so we were there the longest and actually had the least amount of issues. Heads up: I would not come if you don’t have kids, but that’s my take. We will not be returning due to the size of the resort (it’s massive and not quite intimate enough for us) and while there are kid free areas, this is definitely family based! When we checked in, the resort was nowhere close to being at full capacity and it was wonderful! The UVC representatives were amazing, especially Katerin, Stephanie, and Joan, throughout our entire stay. The concierges, especially Daniel and Javier, were wonderful, too! My stepson and I have severe food allergies, so all of our team worked to make sure we were set for the entire trip, even giving us the WhatsApp number for the head food concierge, Moryemi, who made reservations for us every day for where we wanted to eat that night. She talked with the chefs to make sure they knew we were coming, and while the resort was not great about saying the desserts had nuts in the chocolate (tree nut allergy for my step kiddo) everything else was great! *The turnover days, especially Saturdays are horrible. When my parents arrived, they had booked a preferred junior suite partial ocean view, ended up with a view of the shack next door and mold and mildew in their room, which did not bode well since my mom is a severe asthmatic. Originally, my mother was told by a preferred club member they could not move her until 9 pm that night, but I went to the front and spoke to Joan with UVC who fixed the problem immediately. While it was a downgrade, they moved my parents into the newest building on site next to the water park, which was actually a much nicer room than the one they paid for. My in laws booked the same kind of room and were in the Gem Building (building 5), which overlooks the preferred pool and the beach. They loved it. We were in the brand new water park building (number 7) and we loved it! It was great for the kids, close to all the restaurants, and we could spot them in the lazy river or in the pool. The room was very clean and spacious (2 queen beds) with a sitting area and a pullout sofa is available if requested. The balcony was large with a soaking hot tub, but since you aren’t near the beach, there is no breeze out there! **the water park building is the newest on site, finished during COVID. It’s sound proof from the balcony, so you can’t hear anything when things get started around 9 am! It was wonderful, especially for the kids! Beautiful and spacious, too! The staff and service in the restaurants was great to start and horrible by the time we left this past Saturday. A waitress in the French restaurant, Mecure, argued with my mother about the order she placed for my father after they had already forgotten part of his meal. One day during lunch, the preferred restaurant (inside of Tamarindo) forgot my in-laws meal and after an hour wait it was finally rectified. We were told as soon as we were done eating at the Asian restaurant, Spice, that we had to leave to get the next group in and that we could not order another drink or sit and chat (heads up that if you eat at a tepanyaki table you CANNOT eat off the menu listed, which no one told us…) so we felt very rushed. The food options are great, especially at the buffet, but expect lines and waiting times wherever you go. Blue Water Grill, Mecure, and Tamarindo were the best for sit down restaurants. Capers for Italian was fine, not great. I liked CinCin, which is Mediterranean, but my family wasn’t crazy about it. The buffet always had tons of options and the fruit is amazing, but the fresh to order stations take a while. They also have the Sundaze ice cream bar open pretty much all day at the front of the resort and a burger bar there. Our kids wanted room service, but could never get through. We did have some wonderful waitstaff, though! Alejandro at the preferred pool bar is absolutely amazing, Felix and Juan at the swim up in the water park pool, Jorge who is a waiter in preferred and at some of the restaurants was wonderful, Castillo at the beach, and Brendaly, who is a bar waitress at all entertainment and around the hotel! The pools are plentiful! The main pools are big and they had a ton of entertainment going on there, just expect a decent amount of people. They didn’t do a great job of making sure only preferred members were in the preferred area. It is gorgeous, though. The water park is amazing for kids, but I feel like they might need to up the chlorine and cleaning products in that section. A lot of people at one time and a lot of kids. A LOT. The beach is where we spent most of our time and it was perfect! The palm trees are wonderful to sit under for the day, but you’ll get plenty of sun! Super bad seaweed (sargasssum) from a storm out at sea one day, but even that wasn’t horrible! Just a little scratchy. The water is fairly clear, but not always snorkle worthy. The current can be strong and it kicks up a lot of sand. And if you do want to snorkel, they charge for the gear at this resort. I believe $20. The entertainment is phenomenal! All of the shows were great in the theater and on the beach! Karaoke was super fun, as well as the dance parties! Phew! I think that’s it! Overall, we will not be returning. While the resort is aesthetically beautiful and well kept for the most part, we prefer a smaller, more personalized experience without 750 + other families.

Dream Onyx is a beautiful property. The grounds are attractive and well maintained. The rooms are modern and comfortable. The bathroom vanity has two separate sinks, and the toilet is in a separate space. We stayed in the family area near to the lazy river. Each room had a balcony with a hot tub. Adjoining rooms were available for those who wanted a separate room for their children. The resort features many pools and a beach. The lazy river has waterfalls, slides and a swim-up bar. On the other side of the resort are several additional pools. Some are designed for younger children with shallow areas. Some rooms feature small pools located right outside their patios. The resort is well staffed with friendly housekeeping and foodservice employees. The mini-bar and bottles of water are updated daily. On request, golf cart style transportation is available within the resort and to the adjoining Breathless Resort (adults only) which has a casino. As an all-inclusive resort, all food and beverages are included. The Carnival buffet is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and features many salads, fresh fruit, pre-made and made-to-order entrees and side dishes. For dinner, there are six specialty restaurants with limited seating that do not take reservations. There are some food highlights but most of the food is average. Now for the warnings. The strength of the sun is much stronger than anywhere in the U.S. It is necessary to wear sunscreen or limit the amount of time outside. The weather in June is very hot and humid. There are issues with the tap water for those who are not local. We were told to use bottled water to brush our teeth and to not drink any tap water. Bottled water is available in the room, in the mini-bar and at all of the bars. We were also told that the water served in the restaurants is safe to drink. HALF OF OUR GROUP OF 21 EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS ENDED UP GETTING SICK. Nine of us had gastrointestinal or other health issues while at the resort. Some of which persisted once we returned home. Bring Pepto Bismal or other similar product with you. Two others tested positive for Covid the day they got home. Obviously, getting sick during our stay and/or when we returned home impacted our opinion of this resort and our enjoyment of this vacation.

There is so much to say about Dreams Onyx in Punta Cana and our Butler Nelson! We couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend our honeymoon. The facility, the staff, the food, entertainment, and activities were awesome! Our favourite place was the Preferred Pool! So relaxing and we met so many lovely people!! Our butler Nelson went above and beyond! Even helping us look for seashells for us to bring back to our kids back home. He would return our messages promptly and was always professional and courteous! One of our favourite nights was our romantic beach dinner! Our Tomahawk Steak was incredible and HUGE! Not to mention our surprise our Butler assisted with when we walked came back to our room from the dinner! Red rose petals everywhere. Thank you Nelson and Dreams Onyx for an incredible honeymoon! We will be back to visit and will be sure to bring our family and friends! Thank you 😊

TL:DR, everything was fine until the 3 day, when I developed a GI infection. Over the next 5 days, sixteen of the twenty-three family members on our trip could eat the (mostly mediocre) food, but we paid for it about an hour later. The good: The resort is gorgeous. There are a plethora of pools, many beach chairs to relax, and the resort is large enough to stay interesting but small enough that we didn't (usually) get lost. The staff are AMAZING and everyone was super friendly to my family and my daughter. They weren't always knowledgeable about other areas of the resort, but always willing to help. This resort had facilities that were engaging for kids 2 through high school. The bar was very generous with their drinks, and the entire experience was fantastic. The first three days were bliss, because there is just so much to explore at the resort and the rooms felt so luxurious. The bad: The water must not be fully filtered, or super contaminated. Everyone who drank even one drink of alcohol, or was unlucky, had explosive diarrhea and was sick for the rest of the trip. Tips: *Ask for extra towels or go to the beach for pool towels. *The main lobby has a pump for blowing up pool tubes. They are scarce. If you have the room in your suitcase, bring your own inflatables. *Pack snacks, food is closed at a few key snacking times, and a hangry toddler/teenager/adult is a challenge. We brought pouches, goldfish, chips, cookies, and bread. *Bring Pepto Bismo and prepare to take a dose before every meal and especially every alcoholic beverage (if you're drinking). Supposedly, that helps. *The center of the buffet has made to order foods (pasta, omelette, griddles, and meats). They were the highlight of the food options. *Beyond the buffet, the Italian restaurant had delicious pizza, and the Mediterranean restaurant had a fantastic (non-traditional) falafel, and the guacamole was tasty. My other complaints were very minor and mostly about timing. Literally everything else was overshadowed by the rumbling in my stomach and the dash to the bathroom. The food was mediocre, even before getting ill. The babysitting was not fun or reliable, so it didn't help with our need for someone (healthy) to watch our daughter, so she had a lot of tablet time until I a couple of the adults felt healthy enough to be by the pool while she played (the one with the bathrooms). Only one of the kids ever got sick, and none of the adults who stayed completely sober. I will forever regret the single alcoholic beverage that I consumed.
