My time here was extremely relaxing with the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms to the top quality service. The grounds were well kept and provided stunning walks for us. We will definitely be back and I highly recommend others to spend time here for an all rounded holiday.

Yes, it was wonderful to wake up before 6AM and listen to the sounds of the forest. We had 3 spacious room suites, each with extra large-king-size beds, bathrooms with shower & bath plus double sinks. Rooms had safety deposit boxes, TV, tiny fridge, 2 bottles of water and a coffeemaker. Pictures attached.

Imagine having one of the most beautiful gardens in South Africa (they are breathtaking) and then throwing it all away with a poor welcome and shoddy maintenance in the room.
Having booked and confirmed 2 rooms we were informed only one had been booked - quite insistently and offhandedly. Finally on checking with 'back office' an email was discovered stating 2 rooms had been booked. No apology. Funny how the first 5 minutes can make or break a stay.
In the rather lovely room the toilet seat was broken, the toilet roll holder was broken and the bathroom door faulty. All minor but irritating.
The food was good but no sign of anyone in management to be seen in a 24 hour stay.
Final straw was all good tables booked for breakfast for non-guests with full paying hotel guests in the cheap seats. Not welcoming at all.
On checkout confusion to what had been charged to our credit card and what had not. Oh, and no porters anywhere - with the car park some distance and quite a steep climb.
But the gardens are something else!

The fantastic view while eating, and the lovely little shop compensated to some extent for the mediocre food we received. The spicy, crispy duck with stir fry and noodles was hardly edible. The duck was old and dry, the veggies no-existent and the noodles covered in an overly salted sauce. Bummer. I had a piece of my friend's pizza and it was underwhelming, but the friend who had the prawns risotto enjoyed it thoroughly.

On arrival at the hotel it looks very nice, beautiful artwork hangs on the wall, lovely relaxing bar area, set in beautiful gardens. We are then shown the rooms, our boys are in a room at the opposite end of the hotel to us fortunately they are 19 and 16 years old. The reason for this I can only guess is the fact that my husband had booked us into a suite and the boys into a normal room. All the suites are on the one side of the hotel and all the other rooms in the other wing. The boys room is very large and the suite is even bigger. Both rooms are beautifully decorated with lovely bathrooms but here is where the tale of two hotels begin. You have these beautifully decorated rooms but they have stained grubby carpets, our toilet seat had big chips out of it which is not hygienic. The water pressure isn't great and on the first morning the boys shower just trickled out water.
Each room had lovely balconies, on ours we had an ashtray full of cigarette stubs which stayed like that for our whole visit. We don't smoke btw. Our sliding door on the balcony wouldn't close properly when we reported this we were told that it had been reported to maintenance but they were busy because the hotel had 3000 people there the day before for a music festival. The door was never fixed during out 4 day stay.
During our stay we couldn't re-enter our room and had to keep asking reception to reset our key card this happened several times.
The toiletries in the room were never replenished, we didn't have a bath mat for two days, the fridge in the room was dirty.
Don't expect a lie in either, housekeeping comes between 8 and 9, we also had people talking outside our room at 7 in the morning most days.
The restaurant serves fantastic food and seems to be very popular with the locals.
In conclusions this is a great hotel that just needs some tweaking, carpets could do with a deep clean, some robes and slippers would be nice in the suites and housekeeping needs to be a bit sharper. For families with young children this would be a good choice as there is a play area and a supervised kids area next to the restaurant. There is a pool but we didn't use it as it was too cold.

On Saturday 20th August we (party of 7) went for breakfast at Makaranga Lodge - a special occassion as it was a week before my daughter's wedding. We ordered 6 traditional English breakfasts and one pastry and jam. Without question, this was the worst meal out I have ever had.

We had the following problems:
* a long wait for the meals
* meals served very slowly and we even had to chase up the last two - as a result we couldn't all enjoy our meals together
* eggs 'to order' were not actually cooked 'to order' - the hard eggs asked for did not appear and those served had to be sent back for further cooking. Even then they weren't satisfactory. My eggs were underdone.
* not all items were hot
* the sausages were tiny
* when I complained to the waitress about the meal she burst out laughing
* no response or apology at all from management
* we were offered a round of free tea/coffee but still expected to pay full price for the breakfasts
* it was hardly a traditional English breakfast

In summary, Makaranga Lodge does not appear to be all it makes itself out to be. Although the place was not at all busy, we experienced shocking service, low quality food, a rude waitress, non-responsive management and no value for money.

It is no understatement to say that we would have been far better off pitching up at the local Wimpy.

I noticed this morning that after the weekend, the Lodge had tweeted that it had been an awesome weekend with South Africa beating New Zealand in the Tri-Nations game on Saturday afternoon. Perhaps their minds were too engrossed in rugby to put any consideration into paying guests?

We had our wedding at Makaranga and it was pathetic. The night before the wedding, the table sizes were all wrong and when promised that staff will be the to help with the preparation... There was no-one. My father-in-law stayed at the venue the night before to and to be woken up that his car was broken into and all his money was take. To hear that the security guard was sleeping on the job. On the night of the wedding the watrons did not even offer our guests drinks and they were told that had to get their own from the bar (we had paid for watrons to a service). They had such a small selection of drinks guests were disappointed and didn't drink at all. My list can go on and on... Makranga is a terrible venue!!!!

This hotel is located in a truely breathtaking large botanic garden and is on the site of a former wealthy family's home who had a great interest in nature. I have never have seen such man made beauty, with the artifical lakes along with the Japanese gardens, making this a perfect location for a rest or a romantic getaway. It is about 30 minutes outside Durban and would strongly recommend it to escape this dangerous city for a piece of heaven. The rooms are spacious and have all the necessary creature comforts and the food cannot be faulted. I must commend the sitting room, with its great display of tastefully acquired pieces of art and lovely views of the property's gardens, includes a small library with interesting books and magazines. (The bar is next door). Unfortunately they do not take children as they are afraid that they might damage either the plants or the brillant sculptures. For a European, the prices they charge for what you get, are extremely cheap.

This is my second visit to Makaranga and it worked really well as a base for me. The beautiful gardens are a safe and peaceful place to walk/run and enjoy the sculptures. Unfortunately the first room I was given, after having travelled for 24 hours and arriving late at night, was awful, right next to the convention hall, like a motel room. I was moved the next morning and the second room was lovely. Beautifully furnished, peaceful, large and very comfortable, so be sure to request a room NOT on the same level as the conference room. Management were very happy to help me move rooms. So my review is based on the second room I stayed in.
