Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm is 6 km from the Main Gate of the Addo Elephant National Park on a working Citrus Farm. The Citrus part of the Farm is approximately 300 ha with an estimated 150 000 individual trees. We have 4 luxury chalets on a B&B basis, nestled on a Mountain top the magnificent Zuurberg Mountains. Our 3 private wooden bush cabins with self-catering facilities are for those real nature lovers situated each on different level on the hillside in our safari area. Walking distance from the main lodge and parking area. Each bush cabin has its own private out-side flushable toilet and out-side open air shower adjacent to the cabins. Our 4 Dung Beetle suites are situated in the succulent valley bushveld vegetation with no view as dung beetle are always hidden, thus leading to a beautiful tranquil surprise in the bush. Walking distance from the main lodge and parking area. The only, true dung beetle inspired accommodation in South Africa!

We stayed in the Dung Beetle cottage and it was a real quaint African experience. Tucked away in the hillside, the cottage had everything we needed. Beautifully decorated, well appointed and the perfect size for our family (we had our two adult children with us). The grounds were well manicured and the Lapa provided another area to relax and have a cup of tea while overlooking the fruit orchards. My husband was a little skeptical about being in a concrete structure however when we arrived he was VERY impressed. Total hit with the entire family. The staff was also extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Don’t hesitate...just book it!

Stayed here for one night to visit Addo elephant park as part of a month long trip. We stayed in the bush cabins which were very basic and rustic but amazingly comfortable Outside shower was lovely. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout our visit. We had dinner which was absolutely delicious. We also booked a 5 hour Safari with them at a very reasonable cost which was a good shout as the Ranger was excellent and transport very comfortable. Will definitely return with our group again!

We really enjoyed our stay in the guest farm. The bungalows were huge, clean and beautifully furnished. I really hate living out of a suitcase because usually two suitcases just do not fit into one bedroom, but here there was still plenty of space eventhough we came with a lot of luggage. As friends we were also glad to have at least a closable door to the toilet for some privacy, which is not really often the case in south africa ;-) One small disadvantage is, that the wifi is not always working everywhere. But with that view you should anyway be ashamed to look into the screen instead of the beautiful nature. The hosts were amazingly nice and helpful. They do not serve dinner inhouse every day, but the hotel is really close to Addo so we even could go there for having dinner. Can absolutely recommend that accomodation and certainly will come back!

The location to Addo main Gate is excellent however the accommodation was average and expensive for what we found. The Dungbeetle Unit has not been very well thought out or finished off well, the configuration of the build is not suitable for taller people, the room without the aircon on is extremely hot and uncomfortable. The bathroom basin installed too high. The bedside lighting a very poor design and not suited for a comfortable environment. The Farm itself is far from restuarants about 8 km away on roads that are not conducive to a safe driving experience and no meal option is available at the farm restuarant for evening meals. A braai facility is offered with the unit however no information was provided as to what needed to be taken with us to be able to cook evening meals. The owners were very friendly and informed with reagrds to the Covid-19 restrictions and their protocols are good, however they need to pay attention to the units.

When we arrived, the cottage smelled very musty and damp. This did clear up after a few hours, with the door open and fan on. However, it could have been avoided, by opening up and airing the cottage well, before we had arrived.

I realise that the weather is out of your control, but we arrived during a cold spell, and were cold on the first night. We did get much warmer blankets when we asked for them on the 2nd night. However, I do feel that given the weather at the time, additional warmer blankets could have been placed in the cottage for us to use if required.

The little kitchen space was difficult to use. There wasn't really space for putting dishes to dry, and the sink plug didn't seal properly, so water just steadily leaked out when washing dishes. Also, when we arrived, there was water in one of the bowls in the clean cutlery basket underneath the sink. This seemed to have leaked from the U-bend of the kitchen sink.

In terms of the food - the breakfast that we had at the lodge was delicious. However, I was very disappointed with the packed breakfast. The muffins were very tasty, but apart from that, it was rather bland and I didn't feel that enough effort or thought had been put into the breakfast box (which I would have thought was a regular request, given your location on the edge of the reserve). When we arrived on the Saturday, the ladies in the kitchen were not expecting to make us a packed breakfast, although we had previously spoken about this being an option, so perhaps what we got wasn't the normal breakfast box.

In terms of the late lunch on the Sunday, there also seemed to have been a miscommunication with the arrangements. We had expected the meal at 5pm as arranged - and had specifically hurried out of the park to be back in time. However, Dawie then came to ask what time we would like to eat and to let us know that schnitzel and chips was the meal. You and I had already clarified this via whatsapp, earlier in the day. The meal was ok, but there was no sauce or garnish, which again was disappointing. In retrospect, and comparing pricing, we should rather have eaten at the Cattle Baron at the entrance to the reserve.

I realise that ongoing maintenance is a part of managing a property, but there were multiple leaks in the roof in our cottage. There was silicone in many places, so this is obviously not a new problem. But it just seemed like another unfortunate aspect to put a damper on our experience of our stay at Addo Dung Beetle.

Unfortunately, we would not recommend Addo Dung Beetle to friends or family. The concept is fun, but our experience was disappointing. We were expecting 4 star accommodation but got the feeling it was all passed its prime.

We loved our stay at the Dung Beetle. The rooms are great. Spacious and comfy. So close to the National Park. The Ranger is truly an expert in his field. The pool is small but has a great view. Food has been very good. The breakfast could have more exotic fruits such as Papaya and Mango. Europeans always love that, since these fruits are too expensive at home and never fresh.
If we would visit the National Park again, we would stay at the Dung Beetle for sure. Highly recommended!

We enjoyed three nights here over New Year. It is in a great location for Addo Elephant Park - you get used to the gravel road.
Lovely chalet with peaceful deck. They provide an excellent breakfast, very friendly and helpful hosts.

we were staying in the Dung Beetle cave. A very nice and interesting accomodation.
Very friendly and hospitable owners.
Rod also offers Jeep tours in the Addo National Park, during which we got a lot of informations about the park, the animals and what's going on in the area.
We appreciated our stay very much and can highly recommend this farm.
The only thing we didn't liked so much was that we had to run the air condition all the time in the cave.
Otherwise it would get to hot and humid.

We really enjoyed our stay at the farm. We chose the bush style rooms which were not only a great value but a very cool experience overall. Really enjoyed sitting on our deck with a fire at night and the bush style bathroom really makes you feel like you are really out in the bush. Booked a very reasonably priced safari into Addo with Rod which was great as well! The owners were very kind and welcoming and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
