As Safari virgins, my wife and I chose Ukhozi lodge through our trusted travel agents, Kuoni. The facilities are truly first class with little touches like a cool face towel and refreshing drink when you arrive back from your game drive. Highly recommended.

We stayed in the Ukhozi lodges and these were of a good standard, large, well equipped and great views. However, the mini bar choice was limited and restocked daily only. The game drives were excellent and the ranger was very informative, we managed to awe all the animals we expected and more, this included a river cruise and the offer of a walk around the reserve with the ranger. He facilitated great opportunities to be amongst som of the animals and stopped frequently for photo opportunities. The negative side was the choice of food at lunchtime and evening, this was limited in choice, particularly lunchtime as this was more of a snack. It did not meet the standards od a 4* superior standard unfortunately. The majority of staff were friendly and professional. However, we would return but would not upgrade the accommodation as not to be disappointed

Dear Janine, Thank you for your feedback and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and safari experience. We have noted your comments regarding restocking of the mini bar. Our team would have happily delivered any items to your suite as part of the fully inclusive package. We have also noted your comments about the choice at lunch and dinner. We do serve a light lunch including savoury options, a mixed salad, a build your own salad, a cake and a fruit platter. We try to provide dinner options to suit all tastes. We can always improve and so appreciate your feedback. We have passed this on to our Head Chef and lodge team. Thanks again for taking the time to post your review. With kind regards from the Kariega team.

We stayed for three nights at Ukhozi Lodge.

Accommodation was very nice in your own spacious cabin complete with private plunge pool. Food and drink was also a very high standard.

The safari drives were very well organised and you are given a guide upon arrival. Two 3 hour drives a day, one leaving at 5.30am (summertime) and the second leaving at 4.30pm (winter times alter). The guide we had, Allen was absolutely brilliant! Really knowledgeable, so funny and more importantly ensured we saw the big 5, along with many more.

Ensure you take warm clothing as even in the summer, on the tops of the hills there can be a cold wind. Your guide will have blankets on the jeep though.

Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are provided mid way through your morning drive and hot beverages and fresh muffins are provided at the lodge prior to departure. Afternoon tea is served prior to the afternoon drive and there is a well stocked bar and nibbles mid way through the drive.

Ladies, leave your posh frocks at home. No one dresses up for dinner as you don't get that much time between getting back and dinner. Casual dress is fine.

Between drives, the time is your own. Kenton on sea is about a 30 minute drive. There is a shop and spa on site and you can also do a self guided bush walk. If none of those things appeal. Take a good book, relax and enjoy the stunning landscape

I can only recommend the lodge. Everything was on a very high level, starting with the reception, service, kitchen and of course the game drives. The rangers are very experienced and take a lot of time to answer all questions of the guests. Would award more stars than there are stars to choose from. We will definitely come back. This lodge is worth every cent.

Remodeling done after the fire last year makes for a much more expansive and cleaner feeling to the lodge. Beautiful stonework on the wall. Loved the food and sitting by the warm fire at night. We will definitely return.

The suites at Ukhozi lodge are large and well equipped, includes individual plunge pools. Our first game drive was beyond expectation with 4 of the big 5 spotted in less than three hours. We have never seen so many rhinos and almost all had calves. Saw a lion pride feasting on an eland , included 4 Cubs .only one elephant on that drive but the next day we drove into a huge herd of Ellie’s with young. Saw lots of buffalo too. Only the elusive leopard wasn’t spotted. Also hordes of hippo and giraffe , not to mention various antelope. We have never had such a successful game trip. Our guide Zolani was also exceptional

What an experience! Words fail me but will do my best. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here from the moment we arrived, in a rainstorm, to the time we left. Our suite was exceptional with a private dip pool, mini bar and a huge bed. When we arrived in the rain, our guide for the duration, Allen came out in the rain to introduce himself. What a wonderful man. Throughout our game drives he was able to answer all our questions and, more importantly, he was a genuinely nice young man. He helped make the experience that much more enjoyable but that is not meant to detract from the other staff. The staff we met were all a credit to the Lodge, a welcome smile and nothing too much trouble.
The food was fantastic and I especially liked our breaks on the game dives for coffee in the morning and beer/wine in the afternoon. We met other guests and were sat for meals according to our specific ranger. The lodge itself is an experience. The theming is so authentic, not that I am an expert, and very relaxing. Would we return? Most definitely and are currently saving for next year

We stayed for 3 nights and 4 days at Ukhozi Lodge, just long enough to enjoy the full experience. Would highly recommend, the accommodation is very private, meals were delicious with a lovely variety, early morning and afternoon safari trips and animals sightings were incredible. Real up close and personal experience with the animals.

Wow Wow Wow
If you are looking for a truly wonderful experience look no further,
There will be a similar review posted for the River Lodge as we also spent several nights there.
I'll begin by saying that Ukhozi lodge was stunning, the room was so well appointed and the renovations made this stand out from the River Lodge. We were gutted we only had 2 nights here.
The reserve itself is incredible. We were fortunate to have 8 nights in total across the two lodges which afford us the opportunity to experience the big five and avoided us feeling like we had to see everything on one game drive - although within our two nights here we had seen the majority of the big 5 with the first day and a half!
The food was truly exceptional here and we were blown away by it - if anything there was too much! The drinks were also of an impeccable standard with a great selection of International drinks and an array of South African wines that were all amazing.
As mentioned our suite was well appointed and designed so well with really useful details (Like a glass fronted fridge so you could see the contents without opening the fridge and hooks by the doors, a coffee machine in the room to name but a few.
There was no screen in the rooms which was actually quite refreshing.
Our guide JJ was top drawer and made tracking look easy, and happy to impart how he was able to follow the tracks, whether it was spotting Elephants, Birds, Lions, Rhinos or finding the Hippos.
He was also happy sharing information and setting up our breakfast coffees and Sundowners.
The Staff were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. I don't recall my glass ever getting empty at dinner!
I have already recommended this too everyone I know and words can't ever express how wonderful Kariega is.
We originally wanted to spend the whole time in the river lodge but found that due to the renovations Ukhozi was actually nicer (While we preferred the vibe at River Lodge being slightly more laid back and on the river!)

We absolutely loved our time across both stays and would put this is in top experiences we have had!

We stayed in Ukhozi Lodge, and could not recommend it more. The suite was well designed and comfortable, and although we were not able to use the plunge pool due to the inclement weather, it was a lovely addition to the room.

The service given by all the staff around the lodge was exceptional, from the check-in process, dining times and general needs, nothing was ever an issue and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. A special mention to Eliman who ensured that anything we wanted/needed was there for us without a question.

The spa was lovely, and it was a nice surprise to be given a voucher for 500 rand per person to celebrate our honeymoon. The food and drinks in the lodge were well thought out and the open-access bar was a fantastic extra which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Our biggest compliment is to our guide, Melissa. She exceeded any expectations that we had for the safari. She was thoughtful, interesting, knowledgeable and above all, incredibly friendly, making the safari experience spectacular. Nothing was too much trouble for Melissa, she made us feel comfortable throughout our whole stay and we are extremely pleased that we were allocated to her.

Overall, we could not recommend Kariega more and are looking forward to booking another trip (hopefully not too far away!).

The answer depends on what you mean by safer. If you are thinking about wild life then all the lodges should be fine. The big cats are on the other side of main road behind electric fences. There are gravel walking paths around the side and limits of walking are clearly marked. I'd advise against using the dirt paths (Africa does have snakes). I only have experience of Ukhozi Lodge and would gladly go back there.

Your definitely cheaper Booking direct. We did book via a agent but it was due to the fact it was a add on for us. When we go back (and we definitely will be back) we’ll be booking direct!
