As of November 2021 Woodlands Cottages and Camping is under new ownership!!! Location: Situated high on the banks of the Bushman's River, Woodlands Cottages and Camping is a birder's paradise with a wide variety of species spotted daily, including the lovely Loerie. Located just outside Kenton-on-Sea, midway between Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and East London and just down the road from Grahamstown on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Accommodation: Woodlands Cottages and Camping offers affordable family and pet-friendly self-catering accommodation in 8 free-standing cottages and 3 guest house rooms in the main house. A variety of layouts allow us to cater for individuals sharing rooms, couples, small families, and multiple cottages for those who need space for a large group. We can accommodate up to 50 people. The cottages are tucked away in a lush indigenous garden, many with access to their own unique and secluded boma bath, making us ideal for the perfect romantic getaway. The bush camping area has toilet, shower and washing up facilities for up to 6 pitches. Food: Guests can enjoy a delicious meal or a drink at the Goat Shed bush bistro & bar which is open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch (12 to 4) and dinner (6 to 9), and 7 days a week during holidays. Additional facilities on-site include a swimming pool, games room (with pool table and table tennis) and a large lounge area with TV. Enjoy the stress-free environment by relaxing next to the pool, wandering down the path to the river, or at the on-site bar. Spectacular unspoilt beaches, estuaries and rivers are right on the doorstep ready to explore. Activities: We want people to enjoy the outdoors, the beach and our beautiful rivers. From Woodlands and nearby you have the option to experience kayaks, paddle boats, river cruises, bush walks and horse riding. We also get good rates from the nearby game reserve called Sibuya for day trips to see the Big 5 and we are 70 km from Addo Elephant Park.

Thank you Matthew and your team for all you did to ensure our son, his mates and our friends had the best time ever at his 21st celebrations.
10/10 for the delicious pizza and friendly staff.
The Goatshed was the perfect venue for a relaxed party vibe with the added bonus of accommodation at the Woodlands Cottages so no one had to drive.
Thanks for all you did to cater to our requirements. Definitely a weekend to remember!!

We have just spent three nights. Comfortable cottages in a forest setting. We had a really nice meal in the Goat Shed restaurant last night. A real family holiday. Thank you Matthew, we will definitely come again

We stayed at Woodlands for one night and found Potter's House very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and we loved the decor of the restaurant and bar. They had quietened down guest-wise by mid January but I can just imagine the awesome vibe the backpackers must have during high season! It would be great to go back there with a bunch of friends one day.

We explored the beautiful beach at Kariega Mouth and hired a sandboard from them for the morning. P.S. wet sand is quite difficult to brake in if you're a sandboarding newbie :p
We definitely felt we could have spent more time there but had already planned to be in Cintsa the following day.

Do try their local honey and homemade marmalade and pet the lovely dogs and cats :)

On the 20th December 2021 we arrived at Woodlands cottages at 14h00. First there is no way to get in but we got inside. When we arrived at the reception there was no one and I had to call. I can't remember the guys name but he came to us at reception just to inform us that our unit is not ready because the lady cleaning there went to the clinic.

We asked to use the public toilets... what a dirty experience. Even though its in the bush those toilets were cleaned long time ago and not swepped floor full of leaves and here and there cobwebs.

He took us on a walkabout, he then showed is the Restaurant Goat Shed which is closed upon our arrival and only serves pizza steak and calamari.

We decided to just check out the unit where we going to stay. To our surprise myself and my husband room did not have curtains and the one window that did have a curtain was actually a sheet... There was also an outside bath but so full of spiders and the fencing around it not very solid..

The unit was extremely hot. No windows could open and those that can is falling apart. When we arrived 2 1/2 hours later we approached the guy about the curtain. He apologized saying he has only been here 7weeks and he is aware that there is allot of issues. He brought a curtain that much too long just to find the raillng is missing.

He agreed to refund our full stay of 4 days and we contacted another place to stay as this was unexceptable.

Once again cannot understand how this place can be on booking.com.

This place is not worth 2 stars. We stayed in an amazing place 2 star in Aliwal Noord 3@ Naude. We could not even compare.

I will not return to this place

Hello Hedrè. I am truly sorry your stay was not up to standard. I have now employed additional housekeepers (and a maintenance worker) to keep on top of cleanliness and ensure staff are available daily, even if others are off sick. New curtain wire and net curtains have been installed in the cottage and windows have had paint removed so they open more easily. The Goat Shed bush bistro & bar is now open 7 days a week during peak season with new items being added every week. The bistro should also be open 4 days a week during off peak season. Once I've had additional time to make further improvements I will start to list on Booking.com and other major online channels. Apologies again for the problems during your stay. Wishing you a happy new year from all at Woodlands.

I was on my way to work on a shoot and decided to spend an extra night in the region so I could take some pictures of the Rhino Poaching Survivor. My needs were fairly basic, I was going to arrive late in the afternoon, immediately headed off to the Kariega Game Reserve to shoot the material. After shooting some material, I returned to Woodlands Cottages, and their restaurant, the Goat Shed, prepared a Calamari dinner for me. The dinner was quite acceptable and entirely in keeping with my expectations.

The accommodation was very comfortable and very good value for money. I had a small stand alone wooden cottage set in the Eastern Cape bush. The cottage was set up as a self catering affair with all of the necessary equipment and an en suite toilet and shower. There were a couple of Woodlands Cats who visited me overnight and made themselves at home. The place was very quiet and peaceful and I slept very well. All in all it was a very pleasant but brief stay and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have basic, functional, comfortable and cost effective accommodation along the Eastern Cape Coast in this area.

A great venue hidden amount the thick bush on the banks of the Bushmans River. With comfortable rustic accommodations creates a home away from the main stream hustle and bustle, a wonderful get-away. Add the pleasant and helpful hosts and I'll be back for sure.

Woodlands is a great place to stay if you want simple surroundings and friendly service. Especially good for young people on a budget. A bit far if you're planning on spending most of your time in Kenton but the drive is 3 minutes just over the road.

Woodlands country cottages are situated in the most beautiful setting. The chap that runs the place is very pleasant, well informed and helpful. The sad thing is that the cottages look like they haven't been touched since the seventies which is a shame because with out too much effort they could be brought up to date and made into exquisite, chic little hideaways! Each one is very private but the surrounding greenery is so overgrown it is overpowering. The cottages themselves are overfull of very dated and unneccessary furniture which is a shame and the electrics definitely left something to be desired.
I called this post 'if only' because the place was a perfect example of unrealised potential.

We stayed for 3 nights. Their website says "Two minutes from beaches, restaurants and shops"; they are not - even by car it's at least 10 minutes (5km, say) to the beaches or shops. One restaurant is 1km away - others are much further. But the beaches are wonderful. The wooden huts are scattered in the undergrowth - but they are a bit grotty - black mould creeping up from the floor in ours, the outside veranda area is all a bit grubby and the windows hadn't been cleaned in ages. The boma bath was full of leaves and only separated from the woodland by a bit of bamboo fencing - not very inviting. Woodlands is a bit run down, but could so easily be very good.

But it feels safe and the outside bistro served the best fish we had on our trip. So for a cheap stopover near(ish) to great beaches, it's worth considering.
