Four of us visited this special place and loved every minute.
From the minute we drove up after a long drive from the air strip we felt so welcomed and cherished.
There were only two other couples being January and so we were spoilt with attention: all the excursions were amazing and fun and the staff exceptional.
The peace and serenity of the situation of the camp was wonderful and we loved every minute. Thoroughly recommend it.
I would go again.

We chose Namibia at the start of covid because it was one of the safest countries with a low percentage of people/square mile and after rescheduling, this was a great trip to wait for and the Hoanib Valley Camp did not disappoint. We were met with singing, smiles, great hospitality. The staff is what really makes this camp!
The camp is seriously in the middle of nowhere and somehow it has all the comforts one can imagine. Our tent was well appointed and although it did not have A/C, the fan gave relief until the evening cooled off the daytime temperature. We did not use the pool, but expect that would also help to cool off.
Our guide was Ramon and he was well knowledged and thoughtful. A highlight activity was seeing the Himba tribe and evening sundowners did not disappoint. Denise took such great care of us for dining and she is so good at what she's does, A surprise lunch after our morning drive in the bush was such a treat.
The camp went above and beyond when they were able to get a book I left behind to the next lodge. Really need to give Shodi the manager a shout out for that! Our first stay with the Natural Selection Travel group has us really impressed. All in all a great lodge with fabulous hospitality!

The tents (cabins or rooms) are excellent, big comfortable beds, great shower, big area with sinks and counter and shelf space for your things. There is plenty of water to drink, many places to sit and relax and enjoy the Hoanib Valley.
There is a fantastic display of stars, milky way, etc. in the night sky.
There is plenty to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the food and drink are delicious.
It's hot! be sure to bring a wide brim hat, apply sunscreen, and jump into the cool pool water and relax. The pool is an excellent place to be cool.
For sleeping, there is a fan in the room to help move the hot air :- ) but it does cool down in the night.
Props / Kudos to Denise our how can I help you hostess, Ramon our excellent guide, PetroNella positive vibe manager.
Day 0:
Arrived at the airstrip in the late morning
It’s a long drive from the airstrip to the camp, but the scenery is beautiful, and Ramon brought food and drink.
We stopped to visit at a Himba village to meet and visit with the people and look and purchase some of their hand made goods
It was late afternoon when we arrived at the camp. We settled in and enjoy the cool pool water and nice lounge.
Once again, the evening sky is special. Stay up late or rise early to take advantage of mother natures miracle in the sky.
Day 1:
In the morning, we drove the Hoanib river and the camp prepared a Bush lunch.
You must appreciate the effort involved in bring the food and drink to you in the bush. We very much appreciate and acknowledge your efforts to please the guests.
In the evening, we walked the desert to the water hole and then a sundowner at lodge
Dinner was Braai chicken wings and lamb chops - Yum!
Day 2:
Up at 5
Stat gaze with Ramon at 5:30
Breakfast at 6:30
It was at least 95F with low humidity.
The camp packed us snacks for the trip. Thank you.
Depart at 8 for the 2hr drive to the airstrip. Once again, beautiful scenery.

The overly beautiful camp is tucked against the mountains on a stunning spot with unbelievable views of the valley below. There are 6 spacious and luxurious tents with extra comfy beds, large bathrooms, lovely furniture and tasteful decoration. Common areas are beautifully appointed and decorated. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Food is very delicious and in the evening is served al fresco around a big open fire . Great activities are offered like a sundowner in the open desert or a walk/drive along the riverbed of the hoanib river. You see desert lions, desert elephants.....

As our guide said, "welcome to Mars."
The Honaib river bed is dry, but has enough underground moisture to support some trees and has some watering holes supporting Giraffe and Elephant. Rising from the narrow river bead is a rocky, red, desert that makes you feel like you are on Mars.
In addition to viewing wildlife, we went to a local village. Seeing how the locals live is like time-travelling back hundreds of years. Note: If I were to do this again I would have visited on the way to the airstrip for departure instead of making it its own trip.
We stayed for 3 nights; 2 is probably sufficient given the limited activities.
Request one of the end rooms. Our initial room was immediately next to the main tent...which also meant it was next to the kitchen and car park. It was a terrible room; you don't travel to the middle of the Namibian dessert to hear kitchen noises and cars arriving right behind your room. It's actually shocking to me that they built that room.

This lodge is very remote and all the staff are trying their best to make this memorable. Do go on a game drive with Mumsie she is exceptional! Saw the desert elephants and giraffe. Be sure to get fuel at Palmwag as Sesfontein very often does not have fuel.

Together with my family we had the most exceptional stay at Hoanib Valley Camp. The staff is just wonderful, they do everything to make you feel comfortable and to make your stay unforgettable. The location is so unreal, it feels like you are alone on the planet. We would definitely recommend this place, one of the best experiences of our life so far.

We flew in to Hoanib valley and enjoyed our visit from the amazing 2.5 drive in from the airport until our 6 hr exit transfer to Shipwreck lodge (see separate review), both being owned and managed by Natural Selection. If you are combining both properties it is heavily recommended to do the road transfer as the constantly changing scenery is one of the highlights of the trip.
Huanib valley lodge is beautifully located in the rocks above the Huanib river with easy access for game runs up the east valley (leading to Etosha) or west valley (leading to the skeleton coast)
The staff at Hoanib make any stay unforgettably and a special thanks to Ramon our guide who shared his extensive knowledge and his tracking skills to introduce the desert adjusted animals, Eva, Wynnie, Petronella and Simon who as front of house catered to our every need, and the cook Hanaman off who produced fantastically presented and varied dishes . What was fantastic is how all the staff worked as one team in a way seldom seen. As with Onduli Ridge and Shipwreck, the lodge has been built in conjunction with and on lease from the local concession so all parties have a signification stake in it, a win win for all.
The activities there are great, game runs in the river bed plus opportunity to visit a Himba village. All are highly recommended. We saw, albeit luckily, the full set of desert rhino, lion, giraffe and elephant plus plenty of springbok, steinbok and oryx and a lone cheetah in the fading sunset on our return from the Himba village. The village, a current settlement of 7 huts, is well worth doing as it gives a glimpse into the Himbas nomadic existence. Trinkets are available to buy should you wish.

This place is about as far away as you can get! The setting was, according to my daughter, ‘very Star Wars’. And I think that she summed it up pretty well. Breathtakingly quiet, amazing star viewing, and a small frigid pool that is most welcome in this environment of extreme heat and dryness. The staff were charming, the landscape otherworldly, and all in all a very enjoyable experience. Beds, linens and pillows were excellent! Just so that you know, there is no air conditioning so the tents can get very warm in the day if there’s no breeze, but a dip or too in the freezing pool brings the temperature right down again!

Completely isolated lovely friendly camp you are greeted like family. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Only sad we had 2 nights . So lucky to see the desert adapted lion a huge tick on my list as they are so rare,& thanks to our guide who tracked the lion to the right spot, it was then a waiting game, but oh so worth it
Also the desert adapted elephants. The lodges are large & have all you need, large bed seating area, shower & Jack & Jill sinks , toiletries etc. Food plenty of selection for all dietary needs they go out of their way to help. BBQ out in the mountains one night great. Fantastic staff thank you
