The dry mountainsides of Abruzzo may seem a bit intimidating at first, but the quaint villages will soon make things better, with their cobbled streets, ancient archways and stone houses, sleepy cats and friendly inhabitants. Palazzo Diamante offers for a very reasonable price the unique experience of living in a wealthy family's Palazzo, where the rooms have comfy beds and vaulted and frescoed ceilings, the morning room serving a delectable and surprisingly generous breakfast is straight out of The Leopard and the unhurried and efficient staff will put themselves out to make your stay memorable. Only four rooms at present, but more are being renovated, and you can eat at the nearby Carla's restaurant run by the same family where you can savour homemade pasta, excellent arrosticini (tiny souvlakis of grilled sheep's meat) and tasty desserts, washed down with a surprisingly good house red. Definitely the place to stay.…
