The Rifugio della Rocca, nestling below the ancient castle at Rocca Calascio, offers a characteristic restaurant and bar, and the "albergo diffuso", a hotel whose lovingly restored rooms and apartments are distributed in various buildings in the village. The hotel also has a dormitory that can sleep groups of up to 16 people. Bookings can be made all the year round, and you can visit the Rocca (castle), the octagonal mountain church, the beautiful medieval villages in the district and the mountains of Gran Sasso. In the neighbourhood you will find good climbing sites, footpaths and routes for mountain bikes in the National Park, and cross-country and back-country skiing areas are on hand. Throughout the year the Rifugio Della Rocca organizes classical music concerts, in collaboration with maestro Orazio Tuccella's Officina Musicale ensemble, and literary and scientific lectures.

What a wonderful experience this is! We only stayed one night as they were closing down until ski season, and after a very busy summer. It did take forever to drive there from where we had been previous (in Rocca San Giovanni, Chieti). This included breakfast which was all delicious and an abundance of food too. We also ate dinner which was excellent, and traditional. The room was so nice, it really took me back in time, even though the bathroom is modernized. There's a beautiful fireplace that I'm sure they use in ski season. It must be a glorious place to stay in the winter months and I'd like to experience that. We hiked around the first afternoon there (wear good shoes!), then had a relaxing evening talking to other visitors in the pub. Sadly the other places were closed already for the end of the season. This is not a big place, and there's probably not a lot to do, but bring a good book and you'll love it, or take your skis come January. I'd gladly go back but when tourist season slows down (usually Sept). Since it was near the time when they close for a month, there was nobody there at the designated check-in time and a few of us were waiting to do so. We waited and roamed around for an hour or so until we saw someone close by. No big deal - I understand they had a very busy summer, and I realize why! It's a great place to stay.

The Rifugio is located in a partially restored medieval village below the fascinating Castel del Monte. Our medieval room was spacious, modern bathroom, large private terrace overlooking the valley. The food(dinner as well as the generous breakfast)and wine in the restaurant were excellent. Hiking trails were beautiful. The staff, headed by the masterful Andrea, were friendly, very helpful, professional, and informative. A truly unique experience, only a 2.5 hour drive east of Rome. Excellent value. Abruzzo should not be missed.

We have a small apartment in the Sabina area of Lazio, north of Rome, where we spend a few months each year now that we’re retired. We’d been meaning to take a side trip to Abruzzo and the Gran Sasso for a long time, and finally made it in early May. The Rifugio is an albergo diffuso, a “spread out hotel” where the bar/ristorante/reception area is located along the Main Street and each room is located in different buildings spread out around the tiny village that once must have served as the homes of the support staff for the magnificent rocca, or fortress, located a bit further up the mountain. We had the yellow room and it was very nice, with a comfortable bed, fine bathroom, more than adequate space for keeping clothes & toiletries, as well as a small fireplace that we were delighted to enjoy, as this May has started out as the coldest May in Italy since 1957. The restaurant was very good, the vino della casa was a great value—an excellent Montepulcio d’Abruzzo—and the service was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. We loved visiting the rocca and hiking in the mountains around the rocca. We decided we’d made the right decision stating at the Rifugio, above the main town of Calascio, and we will definitely return.

We jut spent two nights at the Rifugio della Rocca and it was exactly the experience we had hoped for. The room was rustic but very comfortable - and charming, with its tiny fireplace and authentic architecture. The bathroom was clean and large...I might have enjoyed terry towels more than the old fashioned cloth towels some hotels still supply...but other than that, plenty of hot water. It was quite cold while we were there, but the subfloor heating was cozy, and the fire in the dining room at night felt great. The food was very good - we ate in the hotel’s dining room both nights, and had lunch there once. Great antipasti, lovely stews, rustic bread - all yummy and satisfying. The house wine was excellent. On top of all of this, the service was friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area from this location and found the tiny village with its many original (and in many cases abandoned) buildings to be a pleasure to wander.

My partner and I stayed at Rifugio della Rocca a week ago and we loved it. We had a room with a private terrace, a fireplace, a comfortable bed, and full bath with an enormous bathtub. We were scheduled to stay three nights but only stayed for two as the weather was bad (it snowed) and we did not have proper gear. (We appreciated Giorgio's help with our changed travel plans.) On arrival I went up to see the beautiful octagonal church and the fortress/castle ruin - a gentle, short hike. The next day we were given a map and information to take a beautiful hike to S. Stefano and found a roaring fire in our fireplace on our return (it was snowing by then). We celebrated my birthday there and were given a table at dinner in front of the fireplace in the dining room. (Did I mention that it was cold?). The food was hearty and good. The service attentive. We loved the old stone buildings and the simple furniture. But if you are looking for luxury (we were not), I would go someplace else. We could hear the noise from people in the room above us one night but we always bring earplugs and it did not interfere with our sleep. Be prepared for a walk uphill from the parking area to get to the main building and perhaps another uphill (with steps) to get to your room, depending on which room you get. Pack lightly! I would go back to Rifugio della Rocca but perhaps in May!
