We stayed over at Platbos Cabins for two nights this weekend (30 July - 1 August 2020) and it was absolutely lovely. We stayed in the third log cabin on the dam (Olienhout, I think) and were the sole visitors - probably due to the COVID situation. Being alone was a bit of a bonus, I think! Went for walks around the dam with the kids (2 and 3 years old), did some “fishing”, paddled around on the dam, took the kids down to the jungle gym & pool at the camping grounds, made pancakes, braaied, and admired the view from our stoep. The weather was spectacular and the cabin is lovely, with a fireplace that heats it up in the evening. We’ll be back. Thank you, Slanghoek!

So close to Cape Town for a weekend break! We stayed for 3 nights 14 -16 Aug 2021 and what an amazing place. Clean and well equipped with a nice indoor fire place for the cold winter nights. We will be back again soon.

Good day Andre. Thank you so much for your time to rate us on tripadvisor. So glad you enjoyed your time so close to nature. I must say you picked the best time of the year with the dam full of water and nice winter nights to lit the fireplace in the cabin. Hope to see you soon again!

From the warm welcome at check in and the smiles of the obliging folk who stored our excess frozen food, we knew we were in for a special stay. The 5km drive through the vineyards up to our cabin (Olienhout) on the rim of the farm dam was a little bumpy on the way in but 5 days later on the way out they had been working furiously and it was a breeze as the track had been repaired with soil infills.
The cabin was fitted with absolutely everything that we could want and the bedrooms are also beautifully furnished. We were also very lucky as we got to enjoy the recently installed strip solar lighting which was better than standard low energy bulbs you get in electrified places. I personally hate cooking in dingy light but the strip lighting completely illuminated the kitchen and in the bedrooms we could even read in bed the light was so good. Now to the view, oh my! We explored the decks of the other two cabins on the rim and can definitely say that the view from Olienhout is by far the best. Okay the cabin is the closest to the track that comes up from the vineyards but whilst we were there we were not bothered by anyone except the odd farm worker going about his business. The majestic mountains encircling us on all sides were completely magical and we really couldn't take our eyes off the changing colours on the hillside as the sun crossed the sky. For tranquility, peace and true salve for the soul, Platbos it has to be.

Spent night here with family (2 children). Swim in dam, mini hikes and stargazing. Log cabins are really nicely kitted out. Views are wonderful. Would be just as wonderful in winter with wood burning stoves in cabins.
Just go, take a torch - only thing missing is a pack of cards/board game.

A stay that is BEYOND SPECTACULAR!!!

I was surprised with a birthday weekend away to Platbos Cabins (Olienhout Cabin) this past weekend.
It was the perfect distance away from Cape Town for a weekend getaway and yet when we got there, it was as if we were in a different country.
I have been fortunate enough to travel all around the world and yet I was completely blown away by the beauty of this mountain valley and the location and setting of the cabins.
Our cabin was clean, neat, well looked after, nicely light and well stocked with everything you may need (just remember to buy wood when checking in for the fireplace).

If I were to have any suggestions it would be to improve the markings for the hiking trails as it was easy to get lost and fix the right tape in the bathroom (It moves when trying to open it and is dripping water) probably just needs a tighten and new washer. I would also suggest maybe leave some tourism information inside the cabin (I left the tourist map of the area on the coffee table for the next guests).

Having a braai on the balcony and watching the sunset with the view of the dam and the mountains surrounding us was one of my favourite moments.
This stay is a MUST and will definitely not disappoint you!

We will most definitely be back and will continue to rave about this accommodation to everyone we meet.

We booked a weekend at the Platbos cabins to get away from Cape Town (but not too far away), and to enjoy some peace and nature. These cabins fit the bill. They are part of the Slanghoek Resort, which also has a campsite, chalets, safari-style tents, and lots of other things. The cabins were definitely the highlight for us, being at the very end of the road, backed up against the mountains, and a decent distance from everything else. The three cabins are also far away enough from each other that you really feel like you have your own space.
The stillness and peacefulness were excellent. The views were stunning. The accommodation was also excellent -- the cabins are well appointed, and the Weber grills even came with charcoal and firestarters. The dam was low on water, which wasn't great but it just means that we need to come back during the wet season. Some people complained about there not being enough light (it's off the grid, so the lighting is LED strips). We thought it was sufficient, although bringing your own solar lamps will provide a nicer ambiance than the bright, spotlight-style outdoor lighting.

So why am I not giving this place 5 stars? Here are the reasons why they lost a star:
-- when we booked online, we were given a choice of which cabin to select. We selected Geelhout. When we arrived, we were given Olienhout. When we mentioned this at checkin, we were told that the cabins are identical. They may be identical in design, but they have different locations. If we booked one, it is because we expect that one, not one of the others!!
-- there was no information in the cabin about....well....anything. Nothing on the hiking trails, or the resort activities, or how to deal with the fact that the shower runs on gas and if you don't keep the water pressure high enough it will go (and stay!) uncomfortably cold.
-- multiple people disturbed the peace by driving up right next to our cabin, staring at us, and then driving around the dam. One, notable group of 6 people parked their bakkie on the opposite side of the dam (in the middle of our view) and loudly had their sundowners, while snapping photos (that included us sitting on the front porch of our cabin cursing at them). The seemed to have a nice time, but they completely ruined our peaceful sundowners. There is a sign at the base of the dam stating that only residents are allowed past that point, but it doesn't seem to be enforced.

Overall, this is a lovely place, and we look forward to returning.

Thank you for this wonderful review. I am so glad you enjoyed everything. So sorry about the things that was not in place. We will make sure that quests get the cabin what they want, although all of them are identical. I am busy to draw up maps of the hiking trials and even built new trails to add some more options to the hiking around the cabins. There is such a wonderful peace of fynbos around the cabins and up to the waterfall, with the platbos indigenous forest in the middle of the trail. we will update our information booklet in the cabin to tell our guests more on what to do in and around our farm. I apologise for the behaviour of our other guests from the resort on the other side of the valley. I think at the end we will put up a gate to stop non guests from entering the area of the cabins. see you soon again when the dam is filled with water. at the moment the level is 50% full.

If you are looking for a proper country escape away from it all in the Western Cape this must be one of the best. Loved the views, peace and quiet, but agree with other reviewers if other units are noisy this might become a bother. Would love to come back in winter, should be quite an experience. Whilst the overall experience is really of a high standard, the pricing is a bit restrictive, especially for more than one night ... how about a lower rate for two or more nights booked together ? Several wine estates in the vicinity make for a good weekend outing if that is your thing, but a word for the local Tourism Industry - why are so many estates closed after 1pm on a Saturday and not open at all on a Sunday ? We arrived on Saturday around 1pm in time for the 2pm check-in only to find that most estates had already closed doors for the weekend.

Thank you for your review. I agree, winter months the dam is filled with water and the proteas are in bloom. the past summer was very dry and the water level is still very low. talk to reception if you want to stay for more than two nights. We also have discounts during the week. No school kids then! Because of the lower visitor numbers in the afternoons and on Sundays, most cellars see it as not worth it to open their doors on the Saturday Afternoon or a Sunday. Two cellars in Slanghoek: Jasonshill and Opstal cellars have a restaurant with the cellar and will be able to give a tasting and sell some wine through the weekend. see you soon after the big rains!

Make sure with booking agent no people with kids booked in other units as noise travels over water and water only thing for kids to do here. Take a fly swatter as one is not provided and 3 to 4 flies trapped in lodge will irritate the heck out of you. Solar lighting limited take a gas lamp or two with you. Full 3g wireless signal available with Vodacom. Very nice cabins with amazing views. Tranquil if no kids screaming and splashing around in neighbouring units.

We had the most incredible couple of days away at the Platbos Log Cabins. We arrived just after it had snowed so it the setting looked magical. The cabins have everything you need and the view across the dam is gorgeous! We had a lovely rest and can’t wait to go back. This is one of the most beautiful places we have visited in South Africa.... if you need to get away from it all look no further than Platbos log cabins!

What an amazing way to spend a weekend.

A vehicle with high ground clearance is necessary, however if, like us, you don't own a 4x4, careful daytime driving in a Golf 7 will do.

Stop at the Slanghoek Cellar before going to the cabins to get some great wine (don't forget the bubbly) and take braai goodies and marshmallows.

Sunset braai on the porch overlooking the dam, boardgames by the fire place, watching the stars at night, sunrise hike - all magical.

The putt-putt course is a must. Wait for the 14th hole and you'll understand. What a view. Take a snack and have a mini picnic up there.

Cabins are fully equipped with everything you need! Gas for cooking and solar for electricity. Only usb charger for phones, so leave electronics, hairdryer and the rest at home - it is a breakaway after all.

The lovely big windows makes for great breezy afternoon naps on the couch and amazing views whilst preparing brunch.

Truly a place to rest, spend time with a significant other (or friends) and to soothe the soul.
