Detailed Reviews
My wife and I (girlfriend at the time) stayed here as part of our South African trip. We wanted somewhere to stop and relax for four days to recoup before our safari and trip home. Tarn was perfect.
On a secluded hill top surrounded by trees with 36 degrees fantastic views. Tranquil and peaceful with stunning scenery and a cosy atmosphere in the evenings when you can sit back with a glass of Francios's latest port in the yawning leather sofas around the lounge fire or retire to your own room with your own fire place and enjoy the feeling that there is no-one else anywhere near you (there are about 6 rooms part of the same building but it doesn't feel like it).
We had originally booked somewhere in Plet but on arrival it just wasn't what we wanted. We drove up to Tarn (about 10 mins drive out of Plet) and asked them about availability. Henna, who runs the lodge together with husband (and chef) Francois, was extremely friendly and so helpful. Henna (who was pregnant at the time) drove us down into Plet and picked us up after our evening dinner as we wanted to try somewhere in the town.
The comment below about the food being limited in choice is a reflection that Francois goes out every day and fishes or hunts for dinner, so you get the fresh produce from the garden and fresh meat - however when there was something we didn't like the sound of he changed the menu for us.

Tarn Country House is the prettiest hotel I have ever stayed in.
We only stayed one night, but wished we could have had one more night there as it was sooooo peaceful.
All the rooms are individually designed, with fresh flowers in your room/Bathroom. The personal touches are what make it so pleasant.
The hotel is a little way out of the center of Plettenberg, so no where to go unless your driving, but is in a good location for Monkey World, Birds of Eden, Karasboom river.
Food was an experience, as you sit together with the other guest, so can`t get away with being anti social!!! Wasn`t too kean on the idea at first, but turned out to be a wonderful evening (everyone was much older than us) meeting people that you normally wouldn`t mix with. Bit of a hobsons choice with the menu, a case of get what your given, but we are not fussy so managed.
Would recomend this hotel as part of the garden route trip, you will love it.

We arrived after a long journey from London, via Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. We were warmly welcomed with an iced drink. The place is so peaceful, it was just the place to unwind for a few days. The setting is spectacular, the house and beautiful gardens look out to the Outeniqua mountain range. Our room was large, comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated. The double sized bath was fun! Breakfast was plentiful and a varied menu, eaten on the terrace in the peaceful surroundings. One word of caution - book dinners ahead if time. Dinners are served at the House, if booked. If you want to eat out, there are plenty of restaurants, but they tend to be fully booked, so best not to chance it.

My husband and I stayed at Tarn Country House for a few days whilst on our trip to South Africa. This is a very restful and peaceful country house. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff - would recommend this highly. Although a short drive out of Plettenberg itself, there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area and plenty of things to do - we swam with seals!! The owners have plenty of fine recommendations.

Fabulous hosts, wonderful views and lovely spacious bright comfortable rooms. Situated just outside Plettenberg Bay, in a country area call the Craggs. Although it is out of town, there is so much to do in the area, enough to keep you busy for a few days, or just lye by the pool relax, admire the views and lookout for the Knysna Lourie plus many other birds. Although dinner is not served here, there are many places close by that serve dinner. Service is second to none, and all the staff are really friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

This was the only place that we stayed during our trip to Namibia and SA, which wasn't pre-booked. After driving 600km from Cape Town, we looked for somewhere to stay and came across Tarn outside Plettenberg Bay.
The place really is a like a country House. Erica and Guy de la Motte, the owners\managers and charming, interesting and helpfull. They have been greatly assisted by the natural beauty of the place, but they themselves have done a great job. The grounds are beatifully designed and kept and the room we stayed in was very romantic.
We spent the following day in Tsitsikama, which is about half-an-hour drive away.
The restaurant is no longer open for lunch\dinner, but they do serve a wonderful breakfast in surroundings which make it difficult to get up afterwards.
Tarn itself is a quiet sanctuary, but you can get all the noise you want down the road in Plettenberg Bay.
Highly recommended.

We enjoyed our 2 night stay here. The views are spectacular and the granola & youghart at breakfast is fantastic. We had dinner on our first night on site,it's we were the only 2 because the food is worth going there for. We had 3 courses ate in 45 mins, too quick for us.
I would go back again but best to eat locally for dinner to get some atmosphere.

My wife and I came accross this accommodation by accident and were glad we did so. It was our first accommodation on the Garden Route and they still had rooms available.
We were welcomed very friendly and openly and were given the choice of two types of rooms. In the end we chose the one with the bigger bath. The room was very spacious and clean. What was a downside is that there was no airconditioning, TV or WIFI. On the other hand we didn't need these. The room was also clean and had a big bed, which seems to be the standard in South-Africa, but we still had to get used to this.
We had dinner in the adjacent restaurant and this was very good. Although we didn't have a choice, we were happy with the menu and the price and the quality we were served was excellent.
The grounds are also nicely kept and there is a nice view over the area nearby. There is also a pool, which we didn't use as the weather was not that good and we were on our way to some nearby parks and sanctuaries.

We stayed 4 nights at this wonderful country house and Erica and Guy de la Motte were so kind and helpful in every way. The staff too were incredibly friendly and very eager to do anything to help, at any time of day. Delicious breakfasts sitting on the verandah and great restaurants suggested by Erica all very near. Whilst there we visited Plettenberg Bay, Nature's Valley and Storms River Mouth, all within a short driving distance, but we also managed a day sitting and reading by the pool in the lovely garden overlooking the wonderful Tsitsikamma mountains - sheer bliss and I just wanted everyone I loved to be there too!

Travelling in South Africa for the first time, my wife and I felt extremely fortunate to have stumbled upon this delightful establishment. Within moments of leaving the main road on the Garden Route, you are experiencing tranquility in a stunning setting. The whole layout engenders relaxation whether you are partaking of a refreshing dip in the pool or simply sitting enjoying the scenery. The accommodation is superb and the breakfasts are mouth-watering. You are also extrememly well situated for a range of sight-seeing activities, top of which we would place the Storms River Mouth in TsitsiKamma National Park. The proximity to Plettenberg Bay also ensures an excellent range of places to dine.
Thiis review would be incomplete however without making reference to our excellent hosts, Erica and Guy. We very much appreciated their warm welcome and genial hospitality throughout our stay and have provided us with very fond memories. Highly recommended, it was our best stop-off on a 3 week tour of South Africa.
