Detailed Reviews
We were a family of 8 ranging from 8 to 73 years and shared a lodge for 8 people. The staff were helpful, warm and welcoming and the food excellent, including the breakfasts. The children loved having their own bedroom and bathroom suite and the space to enjoy their stay. The pool was clean and wet maintained and the shy monkeys who visited with their babies made our stay very special.

We stayed with our 2 children for 3 nights at hog hollow and really enjoyed our stay, the views from our family lodge were beautiful and the forest location is peaceful and relaxing. We ate breakfast and had dinner one night- the food was good and we enjoyed sitting by the fire on cooler nights and on the veranda on warmer ones. Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed . The staff at hogs hollow were excellent, extremely friendly , polite and able to give suggestions about places to visit and eat out. They were also able to provide beach toys and towels for the children for our trip to natures valley beach which is a beautiful bay. The lodge is well located and near to the animal sanctuaries in the crags, natures valley and plettenburg bay. The nearby Enrico’s restaurant is excellent .

What a find! We have stayed in some of the best hotels across the world and I don’t think I have ever experienced service like this. From washing your car to offering to tumble dry your damp clothes, nothing is too much trouble. It’s discreet, polite and utterly charming. The setting is captivating with fabulous views across the valley. Rooms are spacious, frequently serviced and have lovely balconies. The pool area is also lovely with plenty of sun beds and space to stretch out.
The food is good and there is plenty of it; breakfast is an absolute treat.
The location is ideal for those looking to explore the Garden Route with Plettenberg an easy 10 minute drive away.
If you are looking for accommodation within the Plettenberg area then I would look no further than Hog Hollow. The Garden Route has plenty of good value accommodation but this has to be one of the best - for service alone I would give this place 5*.

We were looking forward to this lodge so much that we basically built our trip around it. Having been in SA many times before, our expectations here were high. We had unusually cold weather during our stay, and an ill child, which did not help the overall experience.
However, I would like to stay objective here.
The staff is wonderful. They are helpful, smiling and present. The views are the most magical during all our trip - if you sit outside on the deck you can see wonderful butteflies and birds. The pool area looked lovely (although we were not able to benefit from it).
The hotel is ideally located for trips to Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, Beach and much more.
Now the "not so good": the rooms are dated and we found the room but also some other areas in the lodge less clean than in other places that we have visited.
The kids play room is not a place to stay for long, it is not appealing, and I don't think kids would say there for very long. There are some games and old books, but with a little investment, this place could look much more inviting and some of the games could be replaced. Frankly, this room looked sad.
The toy box in the room is a nice idea, but the toys were very old. There is nothing wrong in using old books or toys, I am actually in favor of that - but it seemed that there was just a lack in investing in some new children games, books, toys and replace some of the very old materials.
The disappointing point for us was the dinner. I guess most guests decide to stay in for the night, which is what we did for both nights. While dinner was okayish the first night, the second night we had overcooked pasta for the kid and Penne al Vodka which turns out to be a Pasta dish with tofu and vegetables. Now this is clearly our fault, as we ordered it only by reading the title.
It's still unclear to me how they can put such a dish on the menu. We returned it saying that it was not what we had expected and the waitress did not comment on it or send anyone over to discuss.
Breakfast was fine, not more - freshly squeezed orange juice would have been a plus.
Thinking that this was one of the more expensive places during our stay (think peak season prices), and a place that we were so much looking forward to, I left a bit disappointed.
I hope the place lodge considers and accepts some of the constructive feedback, as I believe it has all the beauty and potential to be a really outstanding place.

The cottages are small but absolutely sufficient. The beds were so-so and the sofa bed rather lousy, but since the accommodation was otherwise so great it did not bother us. The staff was incredibly nice, accommodating and helpful. The cottages were cleaned three times a day, the car was washed every morning and the breakfast was top. Also the dinner was so delicious that we ate there twice. It was also no problem to order an early dinner as 7:30 was very late for us with the kids. Everyone was fond of children and our daughter was even allowed to use the stroller to make the areas unsafe without feeling like it was interfering or anything. Our big daughter loved the playroom.

Hog Hollow is located in the most serene setting with the most spectacular views of a forest. Due to this location one can only be totally relaxed. The staff are friendly, helpful and professional and share activity suggestions as well as restaurants to try out. Great facilities that accommodate families with little child as there is a play room which is great for rainy days. Great quality breakfast selection both continental and hot breakfast. . Lastly Hog Hollow is a short drive from the main town on Plettenberg
Due to the electricity crisis in South Africa (LoadShedding), the backup power system is not connected to the rooms and therefore one needs to make use of battery operated mobile light which is provided in the room. However, one is unable to use other electrical appliances and plug points in the rooms during outages.

Just loved this place. It's set in the hills outside Plettenberg, and it is so peaceful. There is a lovely area to sit, have a glass of wine and discuss your day and experiences with the other guests, whilst looking out over the hills. The food is excellent, and you have a choice of eating either on your own table or with others (we chose the latter and met some lovely people that way). Our room had a downstairs and an upsatirs, both with balconies, and was very clean. The staff are very friendly. Would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at Hog Hollow for 2 nights during our honeymoon trip in South Africa.
At arrival we were greeted and offered a coffee alongside the dinner menu. We were asked to pick there and the. If we wanted to have dinner in, or if we wanted to go out. Our impression was that they really didn’t want us in for dinner but rather us going out as apparently a lot of the other guests were going out. We decided to stay in because the hotel isn’t close to the main town and didn’t fancy driving in the dark.
Also, no Wi-Fi in the rooms! This is a pain for international travellers tho may need the Wi-Fi connection to contact families! You can access Wi-Fi at reception, but it’s a pain if you are ready for sleep.
Dinner was ok, but not great.. I’m sad to say that it was the worst food we had during our stay in South Africa (having said this, the food was decent, just not up to the standard we’ve witnessed elsewhere).
Due to the planned power cuts in South Africa, the rooms are without electricity for a while, which was fine as we were told, but they kick the generator for the main area (reception and restaurant) but none of the rooms… so you have to plan your showers around the power cuts.
Breakfast was actually good! They give you at the table a mini continental breakfast and you can order the hot breakfast (would recommend the scrambled eggs).

The location of this hotel is outstanding. Individual rooms like lodges in the forest complete with their own log burners. Its beautiful. A warm welcome with complimentary drinks and on learning that my daughter was gluten free the chef baked some gluten free bread for her. We spent 3 wonderful nights here. Breakfast is a sight to see. What a spread! We thought our table was the buffet when we walked into breakfast on the first morning! We ate dinner one night out of the three preferring Enrico's in Keurboom Bay which was recommended by the Manager. Definitely worth a visit! It's practically on the beach. A great base to visit Plettenberg Bay. We also visited Jukani Cat Sanctuary, Monkeyland and the Elephant Sanctuary. All of which are highly recommended. Would we stay again? 100% - no doubt about it!

+1
Beautiful, tucked in the mountains, breath taking views from the rooms/balcony, clean, quiet. Excellent staff. Superb attention to detail. We travel a lot and have never met a group of people more hospitable and that gives guests the amount of individual care as they strive for here. The staff remembers what guests need, like, prefer, allergies, water with or without ice, have a list of wines/cocktails they think we’ll like ready to offer, helped plan out activities for the 2 days we were there. Made all necessary arrangements/phone calls. We noticed them doing this with several guests staying at the lodge. Very very kid friendly. Have a play room for kids. Leave a box with toys for the kids in your room. Food was delicious. Orders can be individualized to the best of their abilities. Someone even washed our car that had been driven for 7 days and was full of mud/squashed bugs without us asking. Everyone’s cars were washed. Highly recommend. Would love to visit again.

The hotel has a shuttle to the elephant sanctuary, monkey sanctuary and bird sanctuary which are all about 5 min from the hotel. Wonderful experience with the elephants and monkeys. We didn’t go to the bird Sanctuary but heard great reviews for it.
No spiders! Great location with wonderful views. Close to the Birds of Eden and Monkeyland - both of which we loved even though we had been on safari in Botswana and greater Kruger for 3 weeks. The monkeys can be a bit noisy running around on the roof but we found it charming.
Dear Kirby,
We offer a set 3 course dinner each evening which, at the moment, is ZAR340 per person - there are various other options available too varying in price. And if you would like, we can email you the current wine list, if you would forward your details to us.
Kind regards
Hog Hollow Country Lodge
Dear Catherine
Although we are surrounded by nature, we don't often see snakes at the lodge, they are actually shy creatures and tend to prefer not to be near humans and stay out of your way. However, if you let me know what dates you'll be coming we'll make sure everything is double-checked and we will always have someone on hand to assist if you feel nervous.
Don't let that put you off coming to this amazing country, you are more likely to have your toast stolen by a naughty Vervet monkey on the deck in the morning than see a snake.
I am sure the thought of this will give you the heebie-jeebies, but there is an amazing sanctuary for snakes called Lawnwood, and they have the most remarkable programme where they show you around their facility and they really do put snakes into perspective.
Feel free to contact me directly and we can chat.
I do hope that helps you a little
Kind regards
In all the three weeks we have been to South Africa we have seen just one snake. That was a Puff-Adder in the grass besides the path to the Cape of Good Hope. That really was the only one at all. You do not have to be afraid of snakes the go away if the feel the vibrations of your steps.
