We have spent three nights in the Hotel de Digoine. We reserved directly after looking at the information in internet. Our intention was to be close to the Gorges of Ardèche and the caves of Chauvet. Both places are great but the town of the hotel, Bourg-Saint-Andeol, is a place not to rest. It was an important city, now in complete decadence. In the town it was even difficult to find a place to have something for dinner or even for breakfast. It would be better to find other place in the vicinity, as there are many much better to stay. The hotel was a house of an important merchant dedicated to the silk route. It is full of old memories from Asia. The architecture is magnificent and some rooms have a good space. Nevertheless, the full house is in complete decadence, almost in a ruinous state. There has been no maintenance or renovation in any aspect of the house for many years. The beds and bathrooms look as if they have not been changed for the last 15 years. Cleanliness is inexistent. The price is clearly too high for such a place. The pictures show a clean and well taken care house but the reality is far from that. They are really misleading. If your room is looking to the Rhone it seems great, but you have to know that there are two roads right under the window, which makes it very noisy. I would recommend this place only if you are looking for the experience to be in a house that has been leaning for many years in an increasing state of decadence.

Response from Olivier D, Propriétaire at Hotel de Digoine

You could have been a little bit more moderate about the word decadence.. We are sorry that you have not been sensitive with the decoration We spend a high budget every year to maintain this mansion without any profit With my regards

If you are looking for vanilla hotel, choose elsewhere and leave this hidden gem to travellers who cherish individuality. The charming host, Olivier, gave us a potted history of this delightful mansion. We had two beautiful rooms, uniquely decorated and filled with antiques evoking the silk trade from which this home was built. This is an old building with faded grandeur, so do not expect perfection - expect to build fascinating memories. We ate breakfast in the original kitchen which was like eating in a working museum. And it was a superb breakfast. We will not forget your hotel, Olivier, and I hope to revisit soon.

Well firstly ... it's probably different to any place you've stayed in before. It is a very old large house/mansion where the living rooms downstairs are very quaint and interesting .. full of history. However as you go to your bedrooms you start to think 'what have I let myself in for'... The first stairs going up could possibly be classed as dangerous with old loose tilings .. I can't believe they would ever pass a safety inspection. I can't speak of the other rooms but our Valley of Rubies, done in the style of the Arabian Nights had it's up and down sides ... its initially looked cute but going up to the mezzanine bathroom area at night on the creaking stairs and the well bit iffy shower etc gave a funny that it could be better. The bed was comfortable enough though ... The owner who could speak very good English was very friendly and helpful .. We were a bit out of season so were the only guests there on the night. Looking around town for a restaurant to eat, we didn't find much at all. The town itself was in a poor condition and looked like it was slowly dying with MANY empty and closed shops and restaurants. We eventually ended up eating at the simple Bistro Grill des Dauphins almost next door where they had very tasty spies from the grill ... It was a very interesting experience but think we'll keep to a one time only.

Thanks for the coming. We repaired the loose tiles. Valley of rubees is not Arabian style but evokes the silk road Sorry that wooden stairs cracks but it s like complaining about cock song at the country side.and for 10 more euros you would have a large ground floor room with large canopy bed. Yes the village might not be very lively out of season but why do you all concentrate on the same spots. And we are just at the center of 4 major touristic spots... Such as the grotte Chauvet that you could have visited. With my regards

We heard classical music when we entered the big entrance and Olivier gave us a warm welcome. The room was very nice with special colors and a hamam styled bath. Also very quiet. Olivier is a good cook and has a lot of interesting stories to tell, so we had a typical 'French/Dutch' discussion about politics, religion, life. You enter a story when you stay at this place, so it's not a hotel like other hotels. If you like that, this is the perfect place tot stay. We won't forget this special 1st Christmas eve.

Upon arrival my husband and l with our teenage three girls were greeted with shouting and hysterics. Main comment while still shouting at us "I am not a slave, your room is not ready, you can not check in only after 16:00". We had just arrived to book in and it was 14:30. This was stated during our booking and no mention that we were not welcome at that time. After the owner had cooled down miraculously our room was ready, we were in the process of finding our room on ourselves and the owner told us "not to bother him", he walked us to the apartment room we had booked. That was the second major disappointment. Everything old, falling apart, smelled, not clean for my standard plus no draws closed properly, tiles loose, gaps in walls, toilet and shower very low sub standard especially for what we paid. I have stayed in better hostels than where we had booked in to. Highlight of our stay. Booking out.

our welcoming conditions are very clear everywhere. check in is after 4 pm . YOU CANNOT COMPLAIN NOT TO BE WELCOMED AT 1pm and complaint about cleaness. our guests leave often at 12; on august we are fully booked. and it is a bed and breakfast not an hotel with many staff. how can i possibly clean all rooms make food shopping welcome guests all together ???? i even cannot have a family lunch . and it happens every day on august. So yes you disturb me ,prevent me from doing my job upset me and i consider your attitude as rude . I did my best to give you the room but you still complain . in french we says "you want the butter and the money of the butter" about your room , you booked a room for 5 which is obviously more expensive than a room for 3; you shoulds have contacted me directly and you would have been more informed ... for the readers i must tell i welcome more than 300 guests a year and have few very negative reviews but all satisfied customers dont write reviews ....unfortunately so ....i dont consider that reviews as fair informations ... if you are fair and pleasant well you will be welcomed with care and attention ....am not a monster but need sometimes at least 2 free hours a day ....from 8 AM to 11 pm. could people who just work 8hours a day undersand it ??????

Very strange artistic atmosphere. Every room in different style (we stayed at the Yacht room, which were decorated as a ship). Nice breakfast at the common area. Everything a bit old and dusty but this makes the atmosphere more theatrical.

This house is extremely quirky and a little bit scary (because we were the only guests) but we enjoyed our stay, also thanks to the friendly host. The breakfast was pretty basic (and not included in the price, 11EUR per person) but was served in a very old kitchen which was a great experience. We could only check in after 6.30pm so check beforehand when you can check in because there aren't a lot of sights in town. Also, wifi doesn't work in the room. Even though our stay wasn't perfect I would definitely recommend to stay here because it feels like you travelled back in time.

If you have little sense of adventure, like white sheets, big tvs, and predictability, Hotel de Digoine probably is not the place for you. But if you like stories, colors, and history, this hotel is a delight. Lovingly restored in the early 2000s, Hotel de Digoine evokes past times with creativity and style. Its ancestral owner was a silk merchant who traveled to the Orient regularly to replenish his stock of silkworms; Bourg St. Andeol was a silk producing city in the 17th and 18th centuries. The hotel's theme is the story of the Silk Road. I stayed in the Venise Carnival room, one of the largest. It had two rooms, complete with modern shower and commode rooms, and odd but interesting period decorations. Very comfortable, with an excellent bed. Other rooms were more compact but all had dazzling decor reflecting the theme of the Silk Road journey for which they were named. Bourg St. Andeol is a bit off the beaten path for many tourists, but for those looking for adventure in the Ardeche region of France, it's a good base. I plan to return to continue the Silk Road adventure next time I am in the region.
