We stayed at Gifberg from 17-19 Aug 2021 in Kranshuis , close to a rock outcrop , hence the name. The cottage has 3 bedrooms , 1 with a double bed & other 2 with 2 single beds each. It is self catering so its important to stock up beforehand or on the way at Klawer or VanRhynsdorp both about 30km away. The road up to Gifberg is fine for normal cars , all gravel though. The cottage has all the necessary crockery/cutlery , an undercover braai. Remember your own soap/shampoo though. The highlight of our stay were the trails , especially the waterfalls after the wonderful rains we have had in most of the Western Cape . There are 4 marked trails ranging from 1.8km to 19km. Most are fairly moderate but good walking shoes are advisable to climb over rocks. There are some spectacular waterfalls , one very close to the entrance on the way to reception and another within 100m of start of short trail. We encountered around 6 waterfalls along the trails , all flowing strongly. The scenery is amazing with some Bushman paintings and caves along the trails. There were some baboons around on clifftops watching our movements. Gifberg is a great escape away from city noise , very quiet at night

This review is relatively objective being my 17th road trip staying at 18 properties over 43 nights.

Easily found in a very rural location at the top of the very scenic Gifberg Pass. Road was decent throughout, but latter stages may be a little challenging in the rain with a sedan.

The owning family no longer are actively involved, but the resident manager was very friendly and efficient.

I stayed in the Kliphuis - large, well equipped and comfortable. Braai in the covered stoep. Great hot water shower pressure. Gas rings obviated any load shedding problems in the kitchen. No inverter or gennie.

Some early morning farm working noise - being an early riser no problem for me, but those needing a lie in need to consider a cottage away from the farm yard.

Good pool and children’s play area and deck overlooking the dam, good morning and sunset views over the Cederberg.

Good walking in the area, but would suggest that the routes are better signed once away from the well marked starting points.

Ideal for those seeking an isolated rural experience. The camp site looked to be in good condition in a lovely location.

Our 2nd visit, so we knew what to expect. Met all expectations, stayed in Kranshuis this time and found it to be clean, had all we required, but as with Rivierhuis, they are not luxury houses.
The silence, big skies, and the lovely hikes make this place very special. A real feeling of being away from it all. Jansu was very helpful in explaining the rooibos farming process, and giving us directions as to what we could see on the farm.
We will be back.

For the nature lover, Gifberg is well worth a visit. The accommodation we occupied was basic but very clean and comfortable (Kleinplasie) The hiking trails range from a 1 hour potholes walk to the nine hour Bushmans Trail. We did the potholes walk and the Hamerkop trail plus the first 5km of the Bushmans Trail which leads to a stunning waterfall and interesting Bushman paintings. You can choose either a sparkling swimming pool or rock pools to swim in. My advice would be to enquire beforehand what the status of the river is before booking. During the summer season, much of the river can be dry. So if you enjoy a rustic & tranquil getaway, visit Gifberg Holiday Farm. Only visit Vanrynsdorp if necessary as the town offers nothing of interest in my opinion.

We came to gifberg family farm for the flower festival and trail run. The setting was incredible, we loved the trail routes - the bushman paintings, rock pools and beautiful flowers. The campsite and facilities are great. A great escape to the wilderness. We will be back.

I can highly recommend the Gifberg Resort as great place to get away from civilization and enjoy the natural beauty of the Gifsberg. We opted to make use of the campground and had the whole place to ourselves. The camping area is a big grassy field with horses, geese and rabbits running around. No shade or tables or any infrastructure, except for a couple of toilets, a couple of showers, and a dish washing area. It was however very peaceful and relaxing. There is neither cell phone connection nor Wifi.

We had a great few days exploring the various hiking trails, taking us to scenic lookouts, river potholes and pools, bushman paintings, and some attractive waterfalls. The weather was quite hot so we made use of the pools whenever we could. We also went on a good trail run at sunrise. We especially appreciated that they allowed dogs and they accompanied us on all of our hikes and swims. The scenery around there is really spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We will definitely be back here again, preferably when the wildflowers are in season.

This establishment is definitely out of the way! The road in was in fair shape but would not be a good place to be driving without 4-wheel drive if it was very rainy. Having said that, once you arrive it is a wonderful place. You could definitely spend several days hiking with lots to see and experience. The property has great trails that are well marked and a lot of space for exploring.

The facility itself is basic but clean and comfortable and everything you need for self catering is available. The price is extremely reasonable. Do be aware that if you are trying to book from overseas they do not take credit cards so you will need to wire money to make a reservation.

I would recommend this to people who want to get away from it all and enjoy excellent hiking and exploring in a quiet, uncrowded place.

6 of us (3 couples) did a 3 week circumnavigation of South Africa, and Gifberg Farm was one of our favorite places of the entire trip. Yes, the accommodations are basic, but they were clean and comfortable, and we had everything needed for sleeping and self catering. The hiking was spectacular, both for the natural beauty and Bushman art. And it's a working rooibos tea farm, which was also quite interesting. You are definitely out in the bush there, and the road is just improved dirt with a few tar patches in the more rugged stretches. As we drove in on a dry road, we all thought how lucky we were it wasn't raining, and then when we left, it was pouring, which did add a bit of excitement since we were driving a fully loaded two wheel drive Hyundai H1 van. But we did make it in and out with no problems, just careful driving. The one other note would be that we were lucky to have a native South African with us (bilingual!) since one time we called the person was definitely more comfortable with Afrikaans than English. Most of our communications that was not an issue, so this is just an FYI. Would love to go back and spend alot more time there!

The cottages are not luxury, but adequately equipped, clean and functional. Very nice overall. It is a working farm so there are activities from early in the morning. The trip across the Gifberg pass is breathtaking.
