Situated in the tranquil village of Vanrhynsdorp, the Van Rhyn Guest House offers traditional West Coast hospitality and service. An ideal place to spend a few days exploring the surrounding area and discovering the richness and diversity of the West Coast, "Knersvlakte", Hantam Karoo, Namaqualand and its people. Victorian in style, the house was originally built in 1916 and still retains much of its original character and charm. We, your hosts Ernest and Herbert and our staff, invite you to make yourselves at home and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of our lodgings. Besides offering warm hospitality and friendly service, our aim is to ensure that your stay will prove to be a memorable one.

We enjoyed our stay here recently. On the upside the bed was comfy, the water was hot, the service was excellent, the ambience was great. I would recommend this establishment. On the downside I feel that R100 pp was quite expensive for breakfast but the food was really good and plentiful. I did not enjoy Gigi under the dining room table (she also smells very "doggy"). No kettle in the room is quite inconvenient. The hosts are very welcoming and attentive.

The Van Rhyn guest house is a real gem : you feel truly at home, sitting in the lovely garden or in one of the many quiet corners around the house, enjoying a cup of Rooibos tea. Great location in a quiet village, in the middle of amazing natural beauty : first of all the early spring flowering season which vividly colours Namaqualand in hues of yellow, pink and orange. But the area is also home to a vast range of succulents( the 12km long Jan Smuts walk is a must for every plant lover)& fantastic walking trails in and around the Cedar mountains.A pleasant climate and no pressing tourist hordes makes this a wonderful place to discover nature and culture alike . The food deserves a special mention : in our experience, nowhere in South Africa can one eat lamb, beef and fresh veges as in Vanrhynsdorp and Herbert( best ommelettes), Terence( opera lover) and Richard( inventive cook) will secure your bookings in any restaurant of your choice.

Even though the room was comfortable and had all the basics, it can really do with an update i.e. white linen and towels. Absolutely not a fan of the brown blankets and yellowy sheets!
As a business traveler, who stayed for a week the following was sorely missed: a desk to work at, in-room coffee making facilities, a bar fridge to keep water etc cold seeing as it was sweltering most of the time and a tv, specially when one stays for extended period and a bit of a night-owl! The idea that you have to leave your room, and walk through the house for coffee or to watch tv, didnt quite appeal to me - who wants to walk around in their pj's in a strange place just to get some coffee? Lastly, the "free wi-fi" was also only available in some areas of the house! Not ideal to have to leave your room whenever you need to make use of a facility.
The hosts were friendly and Gigi the lab is so sweet, but I would not recommend this for travelers who stay more than one night or who enjoy their privacy. I am more of a self-catering traveler myself, so would not choose this option again.
But fine for overnight purposes.

Stayed one week for business and had a really enjoyable stay. Well located place with character. Comfortable with clean and tidy rooms and great hospitality.
Made to feel at home by Herbert and Terence. Great breakfasts and chef Herbert provides excellent dinners with prior arrangement. The only negative is no TV in the
rooms. Kenny D.

What a lovely place! Clean neat tidy, well run. We arrived in Van Rhyns drop at 5 after traveling from Fish River Canyon in one day, without reserved accommodation. All the accommodation we tried was fully booked and Lombards guesthouse phone and made a booking on our behalf. We has a good nights rest followed by a fantastic breakfast. If in Van Rhyns dorp look no further 10/10 for this guesthouse

Herbert is a great host and ensures you are comfortable at all times. The rooms have an old almost Victorian feel and look. No TV in the room & also no tea/coffee amenities in the room either.
The room was quiet and made it possible to get some work done too.

Van Rhyn Guest House at Vanrhynsdorp

Stayed over in the Van Rhyn Guest House in Vanrhynsdorp as the first stopover of our Namaqua wild flower trip from Bellville and back.

Contrary to the other reviews, the guesthouse owner welcomed us with open arms, explained all the “in’s and out’s” of the establishment, took us on a guided tour and explain the availability of the coffee/TV -, dining-, sitting rooms, etc. We were invited to use these facilities and the coffee was FREE. We were taken to our respective rooms where everything was explained in detail.

The rooms were adequately equipped and the bed and bedding was outstanding. The toilet/shower was clean and soap/shampoos and a variety of towels was available for use.

On our request if we can have a braai on the Saturday evening, we were taken to the swimming pool area and they assisted with the repositioning of the portable braai and grid to suit our needs. The owner’s eve offered us wood for the braai. Needless to say, we had a wonderful braai evening that was enjoyed by all.

We opted for the breakfast in the dining room on the Sunday morning. The variety was amazing and the service throughout was excellent. All of us commented that the food was well prepared and good tasting that left the pallet with that taste of total satisfaction.
We left the establishment with a satisfied feeling and will definitely recommend the Van Rhyn Guest House to anybody that want a “platteland” experience.

Definitely worth a visit and is highly recommended...

We spend a night there. When we go there we didn't feel welcome and didn't feel confidently to ask for anything. The room hasn't got any Coffee/tea facility . There isn't any hairdryer. The air-con hasn't got an remote, and you cant open the windows because it has no burglar proof. Although there was mosquito repellant -this was nice . If you go there ask that they not give you the outside quarters, because it was very stuffy. They don't communicate very well . Otherwise The breakfast was very special It was of high standard . It is convenient place if you only want to sleep and breakfast there. It is also very near the main road which is comfortable, but i think there is other options in Van Rhynsdorp

Accommodation in a rambling Victorian house with cottages.
They have paintings on show and for sale.
Our room was on the poky side and cluttered.
The establishment gave the impression of being somewhat past its sell by date.
Fortunately, our hosts were charming and helpful.
We were referred to a restaurant on a camping site - and had our doubts. But, as promised, the food was excellent.
