Barra Lodge, the flagship Lodge of the praia da barra area, is set in one of the most picturesque areas in Mozambique, with spectacular views of pristine beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Situated 485km north of Maputo, access by road is on a tarred road which is suitable for normal vehicles. The road from Maputo to Xai Xai has been upgraded and resurfaced. Please note that there are numerous towns and villages en-route and the main road often passes directly through these villages. Speed limits are enforced in these places and it is advised to drive with caution. Do not drive at night. From the historical city of Inhambane it is only a 30 minute drive to Barra Lodge and transfers are done by the lodge staff. Barra has secluded, unspoilt beaches, and is bordered by the Inhambane estuary on one side and the sea on the other. The lodge is nestled amongst groves of coconut trees and the warm Indian Ocean offers safe bathing all year round. Wide open, sun-drenched beaches offer endless hours of strolling pleasure. Barra Lodge caters for families with children and is geared towards fun and activities for the whole family. Other Services Offered: - Conference Facilities: Seating up to 60 cinema style, audio visual equipment available. - Weddings: We also cater for weddings, cocktail parties and special functions. - Activities Room: DSTV, pool table, table tennis, darts. - Swimming Pool: With kids paddling pool. - Curio Shop: Basic toiletries, sweets, clothing and curios.

Went for two weeks in 2014, was perfect for our dive instructor exam . Very friendly and helpful staff . Very large grounds and perfect beach bungalow accommodation. Very close to the main town. Where you can buy food to make in your self catering huts . Though I recommend having the chicken and chips at the restaurant and a cold beer .

Barra lodge as we knew it, run down and poor service will be no more! It was auctioned to new owners who I hope will do fantastic refurbishments and make it as great as it used to be. Check if they are open if you have a booking soon

We were booked to stay here, but our Travel agent advised us shortly before the trip that they were closed. We opted to go to Palm Grove Lodge next door and were really glad about our choice. The photos you see on the internet of Barra Lodge are not what you actually see. The rustic Restaurant is dwarfed by a hideous 3 storey apartment building (part of the Lodge) - an eyesore for the whole bay. The beach in front of the Lodge is not nice, very wide and very dirty. The whole place looked very run down.

The self-catering units are in serious need of maintenance and hygiene levels are poor. Sadly for the very willing staff at Barra Lodge the self-catering units have been neglected. Marketing brochures are somewhat misleading and the chalets hardly have a sea view. Furnishings are basic and the kitchen and bathroom facilities are rather 3rd world. Lighting is inadequate and one needs to get used to the noise generated by the wind in the palms. This is all so sad as the location is excellent. This is the sort of place that leaves it up to you to enjoy what you can (complaining is unlikely to change things very much!) and we did enjoy the crayfish and prawns purchased from the friendly local folk. The catamaran cruise was enjoyable but a far cry from the slick vessel that appears in the marketing blurb. We were not at all sad to move on to a far better resort located a few hundred metres away for the next 3 days. Advice to people considering the self-catering option - don't!

This is life. Once you feel the sand of Barra Lodge between your toes you will always long to be back. We stayed in the casitas. The accommodation was lovely. The cabanas are even better. Check it out. Barra has a stunning pool, but there is so many activities to choose from. The diving centre is at the beach bar. You can do your scuba coarse right there. Visits to the islands in a dhow, quad biking to the market and nearby town Tofu. Four days were to short. You need 10 days. A nice extra was the birthday cake I was presented on my birthday at diner. The staff were always smiling. I mean always.

This was the second time our group (47 people) visited Barra Lodge in Inhambane. We made our booking a year in advance. We booked 10 X 6 bed houses for 10 days ranging from 31 March to 11 April 2015. With our arrival all bookings were mixed up. None of the houses were allocated as per the mail from the resort of a day before. Other people were in houses between our group. We could immediately see the maintenance was not up to standard. The two plate stoves are a big frustration as none works properly. Luckily we brought a Snappy Chef stove due to our experience from the previous year. During the first few days we became aware of something biting most of the people in our group. At first we thought it was mosquitoes but then realized it was like bed bugs during the night. This was very bad and almost all of us were bitten and it itched like hell. After reporting this to the management it seemed as if this was a common problem in the resort. They changed the bedding and sprayed the beds but did not improve a lot. The wiring of the whole resort is in a very bad state and very dangerous. All the geysers situated on the ground's wiring are exposed. In some houses the trip switches does not work. If switched off, all the power stays on. At our braai area a light's wiring was totally exposed with no globe fitted. The braais are not cleaned. We had to clear out the ash from the previous night. The water supply is also intermittent and has low pressure. On the positive side this resort has a beautiful setting almost on the beach and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The pool is a great asset but became green by the end of our stay. The unit gets cleaned every day, which is of great help. The restaurant and beach bar is very pleasant to visit with very good food. They offer quite a lot of activities such as Scuba diving and quad biking which is excellent. Limited free WiFi is offered which works well in the reception/bar area. The last evening a farewell dinner was prepared for us by Stephan and his staff at the beach bar which was excellent and we appreciated it tremendously. A new maintenance manager is employed which is trying his best to improve the situation so we hope this will pay off. Unfortunately the bed bug issue is a deal breaker for me. We still had a wonderful holiday in spite of this, because of a great group of friends.

Barra lodge is an great place to visit and explore. We chose to fly which is very easy (just 1 hour 30 minutes from Johannesburg with a quick 20 minute bus transfer from the airport. You must expect that developing countries will have certain constraints, but the place is really amazing. The beach and scuba diving is top notch. All the staff are incredibly helpful and kind. Do however be aware of mozzies and the locals try take advantage of exchange rates - best to use the local currencies. A Highlight is to explore the other beach bars for some great vibes and local cuisine.

I want to advise visitors that is looking forward to a dream holiday at Barra Lodge, that our experience was dissapointed. There was no safe for our valuables. Our trip ended with a stolen camera and my diamond wedding ring. (R60 000,00 later). The facilities was not up to standard (air-conditioners and DSTV out of order). We complained every day, and I our complaints was only adhered to after a week. We send e-mail to the Director about our stolen goods with no response after 3 months!
