From our first moment on this amazing property I was in awe. This lodge is located in the Costa Rican jungle and has everything you could want in a vacation setting. It is secluded on over one hundred acres. There is bird watching and hiking to a waterfall right on the property. Every morning it was so amazing to wake up to the sound of birds and our hosts had delicious Costa Rican coffee brewed and ready to enjoy. (Tea also for those inclined) Sitting on the back patio and gazing out see the wildlife and the forest reaching out to the ocean - what a treat. Sunsets were also spectacular. The food - every meal was beautifully prepared and presented - we were so spoiled breakfast, lunch and dinner were all delicious and healthy. Maureen has some wonderful desserts and I am so excited to try them as she graciously emailed her recipes to me after we arrived home. Vegetarians and vegans are also catered to. Our room was amazing. We had patios on three sides - and huge slider glass doors to the outside. We also had a fireplace. If you want to venture off of the property you can. We went zip lining, horseback riding and took a day to explore the beaches. Or if you are so inclined you can stay on the property and hike or swim in the infinity pool. My husband and I can't wait to return to this lovely place.

This was the second visit to Rio Magnolia. We were there 4 years ago. We opted for the same wonderful suite with a balcony on 3 sides. We were greeted by one of the three wonderful staff who literally spoiled us! They were always smiling and helpful and eager to show us the grandeur of nature. Rio is owned by a wonderful couple (John and Maureen) who are always making sure all is excellent. The breakfasts and lunches are amazing and afternoon coffee/tea is as well. The 5 course dinners are absolutely the very best( 5+ stars) ! We were delighted to have a trio of musicians one evening. Every day we had a bird guide that was extremely knowledgeable and had the bird calls down pat! One morning John took us down to see the horses so I could brush them, since I love horses! More than the exquisite accommodations, grand property, superb food, were how delightful John and Maureen were and the wonderful gatherings with all visitors. We met wonderful people that truly also made our short time memorable. This was such a warm, inviting place and our memories equal all the splendor. This is truly a magical place!

This was our second time visiting Rio Magnolia, and the reason we came back was that it is one of our very favorite spots on earth. After visiting in 2015, we decided to bring our extended family here for a celebration, and it turned out to offer everything we hoped for, and more. Rio Magnolia is perhaps the most perfectly balanced vacation spot I could imagine: wonderfully remote (it’s at the end of a 20-minute, bumpy dirt road that tumbles up and down a mountaintop jungle) while still being a reasonable drive from San Jose airport; beautiful without being fussy; decadent but highly eco-friendly (they power everything with their own hydro-electric power plant, i.e. the river Magnolia); and luxurious without the overwrought service that too many high-end resorts foist on guests these days. This is all because of Maureen and John (and the small team they’ve assembled), the owners, who are just the most lovely couple ever. We had 12 people in our party, which took up most of the accommodations, so it was a delightful place for a small family reunion. Maureen and John even brought in a small musical group to celebrate my parents’ anniversary. This is a great spot to see gorgeous birds, hike the property, take day trips to zip-line amidst the monkeys, see whales, go white-water rafting, go to the beach (a 40-minute drive), swim in the infinity pool, and generally restore, relax, and renew. The views are stunning, the food and service are great, the nature is genuine. The dogs add a great element of warmth. This place has it all!

Every morning your wakeup call is done by the birds ans sometime the monkeys, who pleasure to have your first coffee watching the birds, enjoying the sun and planning your day. Because of the heat most of the activities should be done in the morning and after a good lunch you can enjoy the pool and get ready for a 4 O'clock walk. The rooms are excellent and the meals are comparable to any 5 stars hotel I stayed in Costa Rica

Our 3rd stay at Rio Magnolia and as always it was nothing short of superb. Maureen and John have worked so hard to make this a memorable vacation for everyone. Rio Magnolia is beautiful. The lodge is clean and the food fabulous. The grounds are immaculately groomed and their walking paths are clean and free from debris. Love love their own coffee they grow. The staff, Karina, Karen, Sofia, Eli and Eliecer are friendly, hard working and extremely nice. It is truly like being a part of a large family when visiting. We have already planned to go back in 2 years. Pura Vida.....Connie & Wayne
