Bay View Lodge is situated on Barra beach (Praia da Barra) on the northeastern tip of Inhambane peninsula with a long, sandy beach in front and an estuary behind the lodge. All units are within 50-90 m of the beach, offering self-catering or catered (full or half board) accommodation. The area is famous for snorkeling and scuba diving, and world famous for diving with whale sharks and manta rays. Inhambane town is one of the oldest trading centres on the east African coast, with one of the largest number of dhows (local fishing boats)occuring in the area. Guests can arrive over land - NO 4x4 vehicle needed - or can fly in to the lodge, with daily flights between Johannesburg, South Africa and Inhambane, via Maputo.

We stayed at Bayview Lodge in a 1 bedroom casita and our friends stayed in another 1 bedroom casita next door, and it was absolutely amazing. The casitas are very well appointed, (and not too close together) and the aircon in the bedrooms was a life saver! All the staff from Diane, Sharon & John, to the security guards and the maids were so friendly & helpful. Gloria came daily from Inhambane with our delivery of fresh Pao every morning which was also a blessing. We could order any seafood we wanted from the local sellers, with the security guards keeping a watchful eye on negotiations, which was nice.

We were so close to the beach that we could just put on our costumes & slip slops and walk onto the beach for a swim, then walk back for an outdoor shower & dry off afterwards at the casita - perfect.

They had just opened a beach bar when we arrived - and the French hostess was kind enough to make us delicious rolls on the day we checked in, as we hadn't eaten since we'd left Maputo. We tried to get a table a couple of nights later but it was fully booked, a sign that the food is good as other restaurants told us that they hadn't had a great season.

I would definitely recommend Bay View Lodge to couples and families, it really was a fantastic resort which I will be returning to in the future. It's also fantastic value for money.

Beatiful location, set just back from the beach. Quiet and away from the crowds. Accommodation is within self-contained cottages. Not flashy or luxurious but good value for money. The management are very friendly and hospitable. Would definitely recommend.

Our trip to Inhambane was almost perfect!
This time we travelled with some friends and although “Barra” was not new for us, it was the first time that we’ve stayed in Bayview Lodge. The lodge location is perfect, just behind the sand dunes a mere 250 meters from the water. The houses are serviced twice daily, the beach decor is simple but very comfortable, air-con in the bedrooms and a full equipped kitchen made a BIG difference. I would only recommend that for longer periods of stay that all the linen and towels would be changed every 3/4 days. The hosts were absolutely helpful and really looked after us and we can’t wait to come back.
We also did some dives but we had a very bad experience, being left at sea for 45 minutes until we were rescued by a friendly fisherman that performed a rescue like a professional! Thank you so much “Stewart” for being our saviour! We were diving with Barrareef divers.
Besides this incident our holidays were stunning and staying at Bayview was really great. Thanks John and Diane we will definitely be back.

Crapiest place in the area. You are best served camping on the beach or using one of the many abandoned lodges in the area. The manager pretends she is not the manager but a friend of the manager, therefore claims not to be responsible for nothing. When we booked a 4 person house we were offered WiFi, air con, housekeeping. There was no WiFi. And we were told it was going to be repaired. Never happened after 4 days. Air conditioning was the same story. We were offered instead an awfully loud and dirty air ventilator. Housekeeping said they only changed sheets once a week. We demanded immediate change of sheets. Despite doing so, we suffered a mite (Acari) infection. We had to look for medicine and a clean accommodation. Manager only came back to talk when we were living the bloody place.
Do yourself a favor never go to this crappy place. The place is run by the maids and guards, who are locals with very little experience on how to cater for visitors. The looks of the inside of the houses comes from a rundown That 70s show. However the real stars are the mite (Acari) who wont let you sleep.

Response from Catharina W, Owner at Bay View Lodge
Responded 22 Jan 2020
Dear Carlos I acknowledge your review and have to agree that you did not receive the service you were supposed to get! Our management couple were indeed in South Africa at the time of your visit - replenishing supplies after the main holiday season - and the lady that stood in seem to not have been able to assist sufficiently, for which we sincerely apologise. I, as part owner of the lodge, probably would also have left an establishment if I was in similar situation. WiFi - is available in our reception and FREE. Seems as though you were not able to use this facility Aircon - available in all bedrooms - you had a problem and our stand-in lady could not assist in getting it repaired. Mite/Acari - I have to believe you, although all our beds are treated monthly, as we are in a sub-tropical/tropical region. I think it was more likely the pesky little palm flies. Nevertheless, all beds have been treated again. We offer our sincere apology - and will make sure that at least 1x person of our management couple remain at the lodge at all times! Catharina - Part Owner (Booking office - Johannesburg)

Self catering but the 2 beach bars are both very good so we always ate there. Beach is great. Facility is clean, secure, friendly and well run. Only negative is not being near a supermarket or ATM onsite, the beach at nearby Tofo is amazing and there's a small town market and ATM there, 500 M in a taxi each way. ($5 US). So worth spending some days over there. Dive shop here (Barra Reef) is good, did a nice shallow reef dive, good fun.

An affordable yet amazing accommodation right on the beach.
The room is self catering and fully equipped to your basic needs, but since the lodge is steps away from the amazing restaurant Green Turtle, do stop by and try the octopus thai curry !!!!

Will definitely return to Bay View, Couldnt have asked for better !!!

Bayview lodge is by far the best and most reasonable place to stay in Barra. Its protected from the weather, but yet right on the beach. the host and hostess shows fantastic service and hospitality. The cottages are spacious and comfortable and have 24 hour security. Visit your dream house on the beach!!

The cottages at Bay View Lodge are spacious, clean and air-conditioned, with comfortable beds and mosquitoe nets. Accessibility to the beach is excellent for families with all their beach paraphernalia and for fisherman who need to launch their boats. The family who run the lodge, especially John and Sharon are extremely helpful and friendly. Definitely worth a stay!

Bay View Lodge provided excellent service from booking to check out...accurate info about place and activities was provided upfront, the shuttle service from the airport was on time and efficient, check in was seamless and we relaxed into the beautiful surroundings immediately.

Our room was very comfortable and spacious, the best part is the airconditioned bedroom with mosquito net around the bed. We didn't have to wear shoes...we were so close to the beach! Right on our doorstep was the most fabulous beach restaurant/bar (The Green Turtle)...we had so many delicious meals and the atmosphere is very friendly.

If you want quiet beautiful beaches...with delicious food and cocktails...and accomodation that is comfortable and private...this is the place to stay!

My wife and I spent 5 nights at Bay View Lodge and had a wonderful time. Our cottage was just steps from the beautiful wide beach. We were often the only people in sight on our many beach walks. The cottage was clean and very comfortable. There are numerous restaurants and bars within walking distance. We purchased prawns and crabs right on the beach. Barra Dive center is just down the beach and on their "ocean safari" we were able to swim with whale sharks. We also saw many humpback whales along with dolphins and sharks. We also scuba dived there several times. We spent almost a month(Aug- Sept 2011) in Mozambique at 5 different locations and we enjoyed our time at Bay View Lodge the most and would recommend it 100%.
