Beautiful place, couldn't ask for a better place to spend my first week in Colombia on my honeymoon, the nature view is insane💚💚💚, great jungly vibes, felt home after the second I walked in, and great pool! Wish I could stay longer, next time will definitely come back. This place, the Valley hostel is something I have never experienced, its just so beautiful and the nature around it. Thanks for having us, will never forget this place. Elly

Estancia aventurera, es un lugar ideal para aventurarse y salir de la rutina, la gente es súper amable y muy acogedora, conectas con la naturaleza; ya que es un lugar que se fusiona con su entorno, al grado de que sientes que eres parte del mismo.

Its becoming a common thing here at this hostel that things are
going missing, 2/3 times in 2 weeks + nobody is doing anything about it.

We loved the fact that the hostel provided the local staff with a proper living wage + health insurance etc, so we didn't mind paying more for food and drinks there, however I'm also unsure why someone would risk all of these benefits (which are really good) to steal from foreigners & not for the first time.

A few weeks ago some tourists in the shared dorm were missing
mobile phones and money, now jewellery has gone missing from private rooms, something very sentimental of mine. (Leaving behind expensive electronics this time) as to try and go undetected in their theft, i believe this is because the owner now makes all local staff leave their bags at the reception, so now they are targeting smaller items that they can easily hide.

There is a thieve amongst them (Local Cleaner who was recently pregnant, i can read a guilty face when i see one) and unfortunately it may slowly destroy their reputation as they aren't willing to act up to information given to protect guests.

Theft within the hostel has been happening for awhile (I've read some older reviews) they have also blamed those travelers instead of taking responsibility.
Hello...? it isn't our hostel... its yours - Stop ignoring your responsibility as owners.

The hostel will revert back to the paper they make you sign when you enter the hostel, therefore blaming you for your own loss and aren't willing to do anything to help,as im sure they will also mention in the comment box below.

Trust is high and important amongst other travelers who use and travel through hostels, this place doesn't have it.

Please TAKE ACTION to stop it happening to other people again and again and again!!

My questions to the owners:
When are you going to start investigating these thefts properly and ensure that guests can be safe when visiting? - your poorly built safety boxes aren't going to cut it.

Why do you make guests sign every single human right away when checking in? - you seem to struggle with taking responsibility.

Response from Paul Graus, Owner at The Valley Tayrona hostel
Responded 30 Jul 2023
Hey Michael, Paul the owner here :) I also had to think a couple days before responding to your review :) Lets start with thanking you for your honest review, I really like that you touch all aspects :) We are now open and existing for 1,5 year and we started off with an absolute trust in all humans passing through, like seriously, no lockers, not even doors and I tested all new staff by regularly leaving small amount of cash in random places and even monthly salaries on the road in so no not even on the property and so far every member has passed the test and came running when they found money. Thus making it quite hard to distrust our team. There are more reasons but this one should cover the basics :) however since we opened with only privates we went on a good run with no thefts. Ïts only since we became a hostel that we have recorded 5 instances of money and one time a half bottle perfume missing.(and never a phone or electronic device like you mentioned) Every theft that happens we unfortunately became more and more precarious about how to do this, all beds now have lockers. And unfortunately we added 2 doors and 3 locks(your house is lock number 3) to the last privates in order to make sure it is never possible to blame us. I mean us not taking responsibility, what can I do man? I have never slept in a place where they don't make it very clear if something goes missing its their personal responsibility. Imagine if we started giving money to people who claim they had something stolen... We'd be bankrupt in 2 weeks. If you care about stuff you lock it away. We have added extra cameras to the property now and all cleaning and maintenance staff now has to "clock in and clock out" when they are near a room or in it. So we have a strict timeline on where they are and who are where. So again, to all travelers, we are doing all we can and everytime something happens pissing away another €1000 on extra security measures that i could have used for cool stuff like a minigolf court but ofcourse, safety first :) But, please, guard your own stuff aswel please, we are trying the best we can and we are not CCTV London or China where we have control of everything :) Again, sorry it happened to you Michael and happy further travels :)
