This is one of the best places I have ever stayed at and is well worth the 2-hour 4x4 drive to get here from Mzuzu. The location is lakeside and you can wake up in one of their 3 bandas listening to the waves breaking on the shore 10m away. The bandas are simple and functional, a comfortable bed with a good mosquito net and a place to sit and if this is what does it for you then you won't find a better spot in Malawi. There are shared hot showers and composting toilet and the simple restaurant offers a short menu with tasty food. Don't expect 5* luxury and remember the shortest way for anything to be brought here involves a 4 hour (min) round trip from Mzuzu over some challenging dirt roads. BUT if you want a truly beautiful place to wake up in after a great night's sleep on a comfy bed then you won't find a better place. I really could not recommend the lodge highly enough.

We spent 3 nights at this beautiful beach haven. We stayed in one of the beach chalets on the lake and had such a relaxing time. The staff were super helpful and the food was delicious - would particularly recommend the tomato soup if it is on the menu! The food was very expensive (although worth it), and you can only pay in cash -so take plenty of money with you. A really unique place for those who love the beach.

Response from Daniela K, Owner at Usisya Beach Eco-Lodge

Hello Megan! thanks for your review, I'm happy you enjoyed our place. Please note that payments can be be done via airtel money or bank transfers too. Regarding our restaurant prices, the average price for a breakfast is 4 $, lunch 5$, dinner main course 8,5$ and a 3 course 12,5$, we use high quality products, prices for basic food increased about 100-200% and our groceries travel all the way from Mzuzu, 60km away from the lodge. there are also small restaurants in the village. Enjoy your travels, I hope to see you again in Usisya. Best regards, Daniela

Really enjoyed my stay at Usisya and I ended up extending by an extra night. Dani the owner was really helpful and very friendly and I enjoyed listening to her experiences in and out of Malawi. I loved having my tent right under the mango tree with a view of the beautiful beach and lake right in front. The road to Usisya was not as "dangerous and difficult " as I had read ...quite an exagerration. The road was much more manageable. If you go during the dry season , the road can be accessed via any normal car ( as long as it isn't too low off the ground and you drive slowly along and be patient

I went by truck ( and I highly recommend befriending the driver to sit in the front) to avoid the dust and heat that you would face for 3 to 5 hours if you get stuck at the back. Motor cycles and of course 4 wheel cars can easily access the road too. Just drive slowly, enjoy the pleasant scenery and you will get there safely ...and the journey is worth the stay at Usisya !

We stayed at Usisya lodge for 4 nights and we can’t recommend it enough to anyone who wants to enjoy tranquility, great food in international cuisines and accompany of lovely people and wildlife.

We stayed in the newly built yellow chalet which is really comfortable and stylish that has a private beach to yourself. We enjoyed going to bed early and watching the sunrise from bed every morning.

The lodge is designed tastefully with loads of lovely details. The food Dani made were the best we have had in Malawi and they ship the supplies all the way from Mzuzu as some fungi disease unfortunately damaged Dani’s vegetation garden.Dani and her partner are very chilled and easy to talk to and they are happy to offer help and solutions anytime.

In addition we were so amazed by the owl Zizi whom Dani rescued when it was a baby and now a resident of the big tree next to the shower. There was also another baby owl nested on the big babao tree.

Thanks to Dani, Yerku and Rudi for your great hospitality and good chats. We hope to come back and stay in the future.

The setting is fantastic. Dani is lovely and full of tips and help. her eye for detail and design shine through everywhere you look, making the lodge feel truly luxurious.

I particularly enjoyed the free snorkeling equipment and the view from the loo. The staff (including the dogs) are friendly, the food is great, the ambiance is peaceful. I just wish I hadn't left

Usisya is a magical place in Northern Malawi. Although it is just a few hours from Mzuzu, it feels worlds away (in the best way possible). The sandy beaches and stunning views are complemented by the incredibly facilities at the Usisya Beach Eco-Lodge. Dani, the owner, was a true delight and ensured that we had a great experience. The open-air cabanas allow you to truly be one with nature. There is no better way to wake up than with the incredible sunrise views from bed. Highly, highly recommend staying here! Definitely worth going out of your way for!

I'd say Dani's cooking is in the top five places in Malawi, and almost converted me to being a vegetarian! Together with a wonderful beach setting, off grid barefoot vibe and very friendly dogs, her lodge is a slice of out of the way paradise. It's an adventurous but very scenic road from Mzuzu, and patchy network means you have to focus on relaxing. Which is no bad thing.

Usisya Beach is an incredible place on a very serene stretch of lake Malawi. It is situated in a little bay, giving it a sense of exclusiveness and quiteness. Dani has been in Northern Malawi for a while, which comes with both great stories and tips.

The accommodations are made by hand and expanded at the moment, with a newer chalet with its own bathroom (including a stunning lake view) available soon. Getting there, you can opt for a boat ride from Nkhata Bay or a drive from Mzuzu. The latter is what we did and although it's an adventurous drive, it is a fantastic 4x4 trail with stunning scenery.

Usisya Beach is the perfect place to unwind, swich off your phone and enjoy a slower pace of life surrounded by nature. I love it there and will definitely keep returning!

Wow! What a place.

We arrived by the Ilala ferry which was an experience in itself! Only three hours from Nkhata Bay and there is a bar on the top deck! It is about $7 to go first class!

We were met on the beach and the guys carried our bags to the lodge. It’s lovely; a piece of unspoiled paradise.

Don’t expect a hotel! No air-con and TVs here! This is an eco-lodge with wonderful open-air rooms, a very cool restaurant and lounge and sandy floors.

The beach is heavenly and the water clean and inviting.

The food was great despite being a long way from any shop! I don’t know how they do it! I managed to eat three meals a day; a heroic effort on my part.

We returned by car, a two hour drive to Mzuzu.

Thanks to Dani and all the staff.

We stayed for two nights and fell in love with the beautiful scenery, calm surroundings and amazing details! Even the animals were friendly and in great harmony. The food was good, but the best part are the outdoor shower and open chalets.
It's not an easy drive but definitely worth it.
