My wife and I went to Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary, booked direct with their SADC resident special, for two nights. (Very important note for Owners, it is lovely to see South Africa lodges starting to value SADC residents, these special rates for locals residents of Southern African countries, not normally seen in Southern Africa other than Namibia & Zimbabwe, that I know off are welcomed. It is wonderful to see South Africa is waking up to the value we could offer. Thank you. I hope you will still appreciate local bookings and offer SADC rates when we see the end of "Covid 19").

On our arrival we were given a wonderful welcome, luggage unloaded, car parked (and washed we later found out), handed a monikered water bottle and shown to our room. which was beautifully decorated to celebrate our anniversary.
They are semi detached rooms with bathroom en-suite overlooking Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Each room private, with lovely local decor and all the necessities one could ask for, especially if you are a person who carries the barest of essentials (Not Like Us).
There is in a separate complex an infinity swimming pool overlooking the Park and also with a spar attached. You are also offered guided walks within the park by Jackie, who seem very much at home in the bush, regardless of her accent.
The lodge in its' self was wonderful, set overlooking the Park and offering a large bar and lounge area to sit, relax and take in the view, with variety of inter-changeable small dining areas.
All in all, this offered a wonderful ambience tastefully decorated again in the local theme. The meals after each game drive were wonderful, the preparation, presentation and the attention of the serving staff was beyond question. A limited menu, but contained everything one could desire for the individual palate. (If you have any special requirements do not forget to tell them well in advance, I believe they would try and cater to your smallest desire with the right notice)
Our Game Drive driver Simo Buthelezi was knowledgeable and has a wonderful local sense of humor. Spoke well and all in all was a magnificent host during these 3 plus hour drives twice a day.
They waved us good-by and gave a small lunch packet to eat on our journey home, what a wonderful thought.

Rgds

Lots of research and preparation went into planning our visit to this beautiful location on the ridge overlooking the valley and waterhole. We were promptly and kindly greeted and soon escorted to Villa 6 where we spent 3 comfortable nights. I had read that car keys are kept by staff but that was not the case on our visit and I'm guessing that is no longer practiced.

Our villa was secluded, quiet and clean. There were a few ants on the bathroom counter but too few to have mentioned on our visit. My wife and I live in Florida and did not expect a bug free visit in South Africa. The rainfall shower overlooking the valley was private with no problem with the water pressure or water or room temperature. Our stay was a beautiful experience. The layout of the bed, living and bath rooms is perfect with the fireplace beautifully set. The view from our deck on starry nights was perfect.

A variety of meals were available and my request, made in advance for a favorite, was fulfilled by the staff who gave attention to every detail to ensure our stay was not only comfortable, but appetizing. The main lodge has comfortable seating with WiFi that my wife needed to use briefly to conduct business, but this is the perfect place to leave devices behind if possible and appreciate the beauty of South Africa that surrounds you.

Simon was the perfect guide for us with his knowledge of the park, stories he tells from having lived at its edge all of his life, and his sense of humor. We saw three of the Big Five with no cats. We saw lion tracks and had two "hair raising" encounters with elephant we will never forget. We saw giraffe, zebra, rhino, wild dogs, baboon, certain birds, crocodile, hippo and buffalo on our travels in the park and we occasionally saw a few of them from our villa deck and from the main lodge. Simon, you were great! Thank you for making our experience so special.

We have every hope of returning one day. We appreciate the kindness and care provided by each member of the Rhino Ridge staff. We are sending peace, love and good vibrations your way....

There really is a lot to like at Rhino Ridge. The drive there once in the aprk tells you you're in for a treat as you see it long before you can reach it and when you do, a warm welcome awaits with an excellent well prepared & convenient parking area. The same goes for the accomodation & pathwways navigating to your retreat. The main lodge is delightful in its design in particular how the tables are laid in a manner that every guest can eat with a view as if they were alone. It makes every meal feel very special indeed especially lazy breakfast & lunches. The food is excellent if perhaps trying a little too hard. In 3 nights there, no desert were to my taste due to over thinking it (Example: a creme brule well made is a rarity as it must be served warm. Just do this, it does not need Mint to be added as it ruins the taste). The cleaning of the rooms was truly excellent and consistent, a sure sign of good training once again. The cleaning staff was so discrete. Blink and you miss them, yet very efficient. Thank you.
Activities wise, there are 2 which are 'must be done'; A Bush walk with their famous Rhino whisperer and the Spa where clearly a lot of efforts has gone in staff training and making sure this is a pleasant experience in what is a stunning setting. We will be doing the half day options next time as we enjoyed it so much. Clearly this is a very well managed Lodge with visible strong senior management thoughout the day and night and it works and is what makes a huge difference between average and excellent. Other SA lodges please take note. This is how it needs to be done.
The booking process was also 1 of the best I have come accross if not the best and inspire confidence even before making that reservation.
The only disappointment was the quality of the game drive. 1 aspect was down to the park itself and nothing the lodge can do about that, the other was the guide for the game drives. Arrogant & overconfident to well past rudeness, driving beyond the local speed restrictions, so fast in fact that we missed viewings, Not stopping for photos, Reving the car up ‘by accident’ so often and thus scaring precious rare viewings away, etc.
Overall a fanstastic well managed lodge in a very special location with amazing views whose appeal lies in wanting to get way from it all, do some bush walking, spas, read a book or simply just unwind & managed expectations of game drives. We can’t wait to go back

I rated 4 as we had a few issues .with getting there and how the manager dealt with the problem.

The lodge was very nice, beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Our lodge was also perfect and everything you would need.
Our safari driver was brilliant, gave us lots of information and did all she could to get us to see everything, patiently waiting in places for lions etc.
Also I noticed that we had either 4 or 6 people so not an over crowded transport.which made a big difference to the comfort of the drive.

The views from the lodge are amazing and the pool area is very nice to chill in after a morning drive. Food was good and the dining area looked over the game reserve so great location to eat and drink as the sun goes down.

Small niggle..would be good if bar staff were more on the ball when you want a drink or clearing dirty towels / glasses from the pool etc.

Our issue… ..we were driving to Nyalazi gate … the directions we were given were actually great and really easy to follow…except when we actually arrived into the park . You will go over the cattle grid..as per directions and then very soon you will see a sign to the Park…it doesn’t mention the gate name .but turn at that first turning to the park and you will then see that that is the `nyalazi gate …we were told to drive on till we saw an actual sign for the gate name.hence went on a jolly for an hour looking for the gate! We eventually turned round and got back on track.

Second issue ..you need a 4x4 the gravel road ..starts from marker 7… for the last 4/5 km moves more to an unmade road with boulders and huge potholes etc and very steep unmade roads, we managed with the saloon but with damaged tyres and chips over the bonnet. I found the Manager attitude unhelpful as he continued to tell me how he tells all guests that a 4x4 is essential but they all ignore him…maybe that should tell him something! highlight that piece of essential information not hide it in tiny print. Coupled with the patronising attitude and that he found the whole thing very funny didn’t help after a 6 hour drive. Other guests that arrived in a saloon car also commented how awful it was to get the lodge and how a 4x4 was essential.
Luckily the UNDER Manager ..Ayanda ..on our departure offered to let us out through a different route which was very helpful ,she has a professional and effective manner that you would expect from a manager. And was always helpful when anyone needed anything during the stay.
Hope she gets promoted soon!

Dear susan_byrne54, Thank you for taking the time to write the comprehensive and good review on Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge? We are so delighted that you enjoyed overall a wonderful experience with us. Unfortunately the roads in the park are maintained by the park authorities and although we do grade our section regularly, we have no control over the rest of the roads. They are usually in a reasonable condition and we are sure the recent very heavy rains caused run off and damage to the gravel section. We really appreciate your comments overall and have escalated this to our Operations Manager who will address your issues with the relevant people, as well as addressing the road with the park again. Wishing you many happy travels further. Kind regards

My wife and I celebrated our 15 year anniversary at this wonderful lodge.
We were warmly welcomed by beaming smiles at checkin and were offered a welcome drink, which we enjoyed, whilst filling in the registration form. We were later taken to our room by the general manager on duty, who did a great job showing us around and thoroughly explaining what the lodge offered eg. How to book game drives etc.
Our room was absolutely beautiful, with stunning views from anywhere in the room. It was so private that we felt like the only guests in the lodge. We used the fireplace that is sandwiched between the room and the bathroom, which creates such an ambience. The rooms are very well appointed, with all the bells and whistles, but still feels personal.
The main building mostly comprises of decks raised on stilts, and has a spectacular 180° bushveld view. Although there were a lot of guests it didn't feel full, and there are many cleverly designed seating coves scattered throughout the main building, decks and pool area, that allows guests the option to mingle or retreat, whilst enjoying a cocktail from the bar. The layout and design is spot; a unique contemporary twist on the African Lodge theme, creating a chique but warm atmosphere, forcing guests to instantly start unwinding on entry.
The food from the restaurant served by happy smily waitrons was beautifully presented and very tasty. I especially enjoyed the Kingklip and Springbok Mains and Salmon and Caper Eggs Benedict.... scrumptious !!
The bar was great, and served all the old favorite cocktails plus some of their own personal ones. The wine list was extensive and well chosen.
The high Tea was also wonderful, very welcome after a long game drive.
Simo our game ranger was so informative and made us feel like we had known him for years. We loved the game drives, and he made a huge effort to help us see almost every animal the park had to offer. My highlight was seeing the elephants up close and personal. He seemed to be the local elephant whisperer, and was seemed well-versed on their behaviour, which made us feel very comfortable being so close to them.
My wife and I went for a couples massage on our second afternoon at the spa. We could have stayed there forever. The masseuses were tremendous. It really felt as if we had all day to be pampered. They really took their time, and it didn't feel rushed like other spas we've been to.
We drove back home in a beautifully cleaned car, eating our muffins from our farewell pack, and wishing we had stayed longer.
Keep up the Amazing work Rhino Ridge Team

This is the kind of stay that leaves you wanting everyone you know to go and experience! From the moment you arrive to fresh wet face cloths to the minute you leave with padkos in hand, every detail, every interaction, every meal leaves you feeling like you’re a favourite family member who has come to stay. Staff greeting you by name with smiles! But for me, the icing on the gluten-free cake was the meal planning around being gluten free. Not once did I look at anyone else’s food and feel I was missing something. Every meal was delicious. Malva pudding and carrot cake? What more could a girl ask for? Please extend my thanks again to the chefs! If you are umming and aahing about going. Stop, and book. Have i mentioned the fantastic accommodation, great game drives and the wonderful spa? Loved it!

We stayed in a Villa, no. 3, quite close to the main building. Very spacious, modern and very clean. Breakfast and High tea were great. Dinner didn’t quite live up it’s expectations. We were only there for 2 nights. It is a great location, not for sedans, rather use a suv/4x4 to access. Excellent views from everywhere at the lodge.

Game drives were fun, saw many Buffaloes up close as well as Elephants and Rhino.
Not luck enough to see any Cats on our short stay.

Chennai the on-site Manager was very friendly and nothing was too much for her or her team. Excellent service, very friendly. Highly recommended!

I cannot really complain about this lodge but I can say it was not really for us. The focus here is more about the food (which is fabulous) and the spa (also very good) and not so much on the safari experience. If you want to go and enjoy a high end hotel type experience with a beautiful location, a mini bar, an overpriced gift shop and an upmarket restaurant, then go for it. If you want to a great safari guide who takes time to find you the animals and is entertaining and fun, then I'd say choose somewhere else. There is very little interaction with the staff as the only time you see them is when they are serving you food so, although it is encouraged for you to get to know them, it is not really possible. It's heart is in the right place but it has no soul.

This was our first safari and it did not disappoint thanks to the wonderful guides and staff here. From the moment we arrived (greeted with a warm welcome and a warm washcloth) to when we left 3 days later (with a care package for our journey), we were well taken care of by people who care about their community and the environment. The lodge and the rooms themselves are tastefully decorated, and the views beautiful. Sitting by the pool, it was peaceful and they even came by to ask if we’d like drinks. The food was amazing (we are vegetarian) and the drinks and snacks we had on the safaris were much appreciated. Everything about this place was fantastic and we felt so fortunate to have found it.

The park is very big, and the guides take different ways… they stay in contact by radio to advise where specific animals are spotted… but it is not at all busy …except if for example lions are spott…

There won't be a lot of visitors, rhino ridge only allow a certain amount of guests at a time which makes the experience fantastic as you have your own designated waiter/waitress for the duration of the stay. To be fare on our stay the restaurant was full but full was only roughly 10/15 tables. You are allocated a table on your first night and that's your table for the rest of your stay. The only time we came into contact with other guests was when everyone met up for breakfast before the game drives and dinner times. You have the same guid for every drive and share the vehicle with the same guests all week which is nice. The guid stays on the tracks but there is many many different routes you go to different areas each drive, we saw a wide variety of animals including elephants, rhino, giraffe, zebra and on last morning drive we had two lions walking on the road Infront of us. We have been here twice and love it.

Hello Elizabeth, Weather can be mixed in October - it is spring so game viewing can be fun with lots of baby animals. Temps are usually around 25c, but cooler early mornings and evenings. Suggest a scarf and jacket for game drives . We do have rain ponchos in the vehicle in case of rain. The lodge can do your laundry for you, but this is an extra charge. We hope to welcome you soon
