The tiny town of Riebeek Kasteel is a delightful soup of small owner-occupied shops, from clothing to brewery to hardware, etc.. Sitting atop the town, like the jewel in the crown, is the old hotel, looking inviting and priced as reasonably as the B&Bs. If I'd done the booking, it would have been at the old hotel. However, we stayed at La Montagne Guest House which was perfectly fine, quite comfortable, but a bit too homey and over-decorated for me. Our hostess was a charmer, but we were still sleeping in the room off the kitchen, decorated by my granny. Breakfast was a treat, with fruit-filled pancakes as a prelude to eggs and bacon. I have nothing negative to say about La Montagne, but if ambiance is important, stay at the refurbished hotel.

Thank you Veronica for your fantastic service and delicious breakfasts. We made new friends with another wonderful couple over breakfast. The room was clean, very spacious and comfortable but glad to hear they're getting a revamp. Perfectly situated to walk the whole village with absolute ease.

My bathroom was not up to standard. When I opened the shower door to switch on the water, the cold water shot out at me and all over the floor. There was black mildew all inside the shower. The room was comfortable, but there was no wifi. The church bell was a bit irritating, but thank goodness for the electric blanket and the heater. The breakfast pancake let them down, tinned fruit salad mixed with strawberry yoghurt and chocolate sauce???
