"The grand old lady finally has her new dress on" is what the locals said when The Royal was refurbished and upgraded to the highest standards in 2005/2006. After serving more than seven generations, the oldest hotel of the Western Cape occupies a very special place in the hearts of both local and international visitors.

Clean but service wasn't up to the accreditation the hotel has been awarded. Front of house staff didn't show us around, offer to help with bags, nor tell us about breakfasts /meals. Lovely setting though and beds v comfortable. We had dinner at The Traveller's Rest down the road- was excellent- highly recommend it!

Dear guest, Thank you for you review and thank you for the feed-back on our front of house staff. Information like this helps us to keep improving on our services. This is definitely not our standard and has been fully investigated and disciplinary action has been taken. We are glad you enjoyed your dinner at Travellers Rest. Excellent choice. I can only hope our front of house pointed you in that direction.

I have stayed here many times and I'm never disappointed. There are two types of rooms, garden and inside the main building. Garden is of course very nice but I don't mind the main building rooms. Rooms are very clean with king-size bed, minibar, tv, air conditioning and a large modern bathroom which holds a bathtub and separate walk-in shower. The only negative is maybe that rooms are a bit small, but you're not in South Africa and the Shiraz wine district to sit in a hotel room. Riebeek Kasteel is ideal as a hub when you travel around the wine district. The hotel is located in the town centre with multiple restaurants within a minute walk. Auntie Pasti, BBB and 6 degrees are my favorites (try the pizza at 6 degrees!). I always get a colonial feeling when staying here, an

Dear guest, Thank you for your wonderful review. Years ago you were the first one to write a review on TripAdvisor. It is a pity they removed it now you wrote your second review on us. Always a pleasure to welcome you at your home away from home. Hopefully we may do so for many years to come.

We have stayed in this lovely hotel before and we found it to really great. This trip unfortunately we found the service of the staff to be poor. We had to continually follow up and look for staff to order drinks. We waited over an hour for tea at our breakfast and were then served Rooibos when we had asked for 5 roses. This may sound petty but it was very irritating. We also thought that a nice touch would be to have tea & coffee available in the rooms. There was also no hairdryers in our rooms which was an inconvenience.

Dear guest, Thank you for your review, our sincere apologies for the waiting time of your tea with breakfast. We have been able to track down what happened as it was last Sunday morning. The waiters did confirm there was confusion with your order as it came in at the same time at the bar as an order from a big group that just arrived in an other area creating a delay and mix up of your order. This is no excuse of course and again our sincere apologies. Regarding your suggestion of having coffee and tea available in the room; we chose to not have messy (instant) coffee stations with kettles etc in our rooms. Our guests just have to dial 9 and room service will bring your coffee (or tea) freshly made with our espresso machines from 100% Arabica beans (or your choice of tea). This is free of charge and I think a nice service. This is explained in our directory but as not everybody reads the directory it is also mentioned in our welcome letter that's on arrival in your room. Also in both the directory and the welcome letter it states that a hair dryer can be delivered to your room. This because at one stage we kept on buying new ones as they just kept disappearing. I hope that by writing this comment it will not only have informed you should you stay a next time with us but also other future guests who might be reading this review. Thank you again for taking the time to review us and we look forward to welcoming you back at our establishment.

We stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon in October, and as always it was absolutely fantastic!!! We arrived to find champagne, chocolates and rose petals in our room, everything was clean and the staff is fantastically trained and professional.....one particular gentleman brought me coffee at 23:00 pm with a smile. The food is incredible as well with a wide selection to choose from. I would like to thank the staff on making my honeymoon so unforgettable and congratulate the owners on running such a fantastic establishment. We are planning a breakaway weekend to the hotel soon....we got engaged here, had our honeymoon here and we will be back for more!

We stayed here for the 50% late walk in special, because the hotel was relativley empty we got one of the standard rooms overlooking the garden. This room was absolutley wonderful and we would have paid full price for another night but they only had the standard rooms in the hotel available and they were definitly not worth the same amount. My suggestion is that you ask for the standard room on the garden if you can get it - stunning views and it has its own little patio area. One negative was that our TV went on the blink - we got a DVD from reception but it didn't work because it was the wrong area code, then some of the channels weren't working and while we were watching a movie on one of the channels the whole thing turned off and that channel disappeared. Apart from that

Dear guest, We are happy you enjoyed your stay with us in one of the garden rooms. All our standard rooms were upgraded a few years ago to the highest standards and all offer the same facilities and are similar in size. Some guests prefer the garden while others prefer to be in the main building. Like I said the rooms itself are alike. Regarding the TV, we have a DSTV Hotel system and we are sorry that on that particular day it gave some problems. Normally this hardly happens and are we quiet happy with Multi Choice. Thank you very much for taking your time to give us feedback and we hope welcoming you again in our valley, still called "The best kept secret of the Western Cape"
