"The grand old lady finally has her new dress on" is what the locals said when The Royal was refurbished and upgraded to the highest standards in 2005/2006. After serving more than seven generations, the oldest hotel of the Western Cape occupies a very special place in the hearts of both local and international visitors.

I had the pleasure of staying in this lovely hotel on 25/26 March 2019. I was recovering from a two week stay in hospital and unable to drive and was accompanied by a very good friend. We had booked the garden rooms but when we checked in Lisa who was on duty in reception took one look at me and suggested I should be in the hotel as I was very frail. She went the extra mile and nothing was too much trouble and I started to feel so much better immediately. Lovemore in the bar who seemed to be on duty for hours on end was charming and he organised tea for me whenever I phoned because he was also the Night Porter. He also filled up my hot water bottle before I tottered off to bed. The breakfasts were delicious and I knew I was getting better when I tucked in enthusiastically.

I really wanted to love this hotel. The building is beautiful. The suite we had was lovely but although the service was very friendly they were struggling. I think Sunday night is usually quiet so minimum staff were on duty so evening barman was also the night porter and was a little out of his depth. Dinner was a bit hit and miss. The external garden area looked like it needed a little tlc.

From start to finish, our stay at the Royal Hotel was perfect. Great food, comfortable rooms, excellent food, great location. We used it as a great base for exploring the Swartland wine country, and would definitely stay here again.

We were so pleased that we could get a booking for Christmas lunch. Petra who helped with the booking was fabulous. My daughter is vegetarian and when I enquired about vegetarian options they substituted one seafood dish with a delicious local goats cheese dish. Nothing was too much trouble. Though advertised as a 4 course meal we were served 5 tasty & substantial courses that ended in a fabulous trio of deserts. All this for R425 per head made it the best value for money Xmas lunch meal in Cape Town. We have done the overpriced meals at the oldest 5 Star hotel in CT and Riebeeck Kasteel’s Royal compared equally favorably at about a fifth of the price. We got a tasty meal for 3 plus excellent wine, service charge and tip for the price of one meal! Our waitress was very

We visited the Royal Hotel in Riebeek Kasteel as part of a planning session for work. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere in the hotel. It is very tastefully decorated, and the rooms and service was very good. The food in the restaurant, even though it took some time to prepare, was of excellent quality. I will definitely go back if I get the chance, and I will definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and colleagues.
