Away with the Fairies is a backpacker hostel with one of the best views in the country from our garden. We have all sorts of accommodation ranging from En-suites to Self Catering cottage, doubles, twins, dorms and camping. The hiking trails through Auckland Nature reserve start and finish in our back garden. On the hikes you can see ancient forests and endless waterfalls. Our atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with nature and views what we are all about.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
We loved our quick one night stopover! We stayed the night in Frodo's cottage. Before we settled in, we were given a great heads up of all the fabulous walks to do in the area. It was really cold that night, but we were fortunate to have a fireplace lit and packed with wood for the evening fire in our cottage. We ordered pizzas from the restaurant on the premises and enjoyed it with a candlelight dinner in our room. Thanks to the friendliness of the staff on duty.

A magical setting with breathtaking views and a bath to tempt you! The Smoothie Bar served delicious smoothies and sitting outside in front of the fire, listening to the live band and signing along was a great way to end the afternoon. The only downside was the inflated price for the hand knitted, locally made mittens being sold in the shop, maybe it was because I was a visitor…R175 more than at the shop in Hogsback!

A unique, enchanting, small, and beautiful hostel nestled in nature. Great pizza, craft beer, and gin on tap, sweet and friendly dogs, and a warm reception. Everything has a hippie vibe. There are excellent hiking opportunities, whether for a day or by taking on the Amatola Trail.

You will find something special here. Whether it is the smell of their fresh linen, the fireplaces going throughout the day or the craft beer. Maybe it will be your favourite song playing on an LP. Whatever it is, you will want to be back soon.

My partner and I visited Away with the Fairies yesterday after a short hike nearby. We were greeted by friendly staff and guests and cold craft beer which was great! We took a short walk to the new deck overlooking a huge valley with the hogsback mountains in the distance while enjoying the beer. We then ordered a take away pizza which was incredible! The base was made from stone ground flour, and was perfectly thin and tasty, the choice of toppings cover anything you could need, and everything was fresh and delicious! Highly recommended.
While we didn't stay at Away with the Fairies, I would consider them for our next visit to Hogsback for the warm welcome we received, the beautiful setting and great food!

Value for money, with cold beer and good pizzas. Run by an enthusiastic Englishman with friendly happy staff some of whom seem to smoke a bit too much wacky, Lokanyo is without a doubt the happiest most affable man I have ever met. He will brighten your day.

Had the most relaxed long weekend away with friends. The host Dan was so helpful and friendly and went out of his way for anything we asked. The views and hikes are breath takingly beautiful. The self catering rooms are well kitted and very comfy.

Had a good stay at this establishment. My family and I stayed in the Hobbit Room which had everything we needed including a fire place to keep warm. The pizza and craft beer was really good . Bonga and Themba are really friendly and awesome . We couldn't fill the bath with water due to the drought but we could still take pictures. We will definitely be returning.

Definitely worth the stay even if it’s just to utilize the “world famous bathtub with a view”. Roos was really cute and cozy with a fire ready and waiting as you arrive. When we arrived we were greeted with the friendliest hostess known to man. Amazing hiking trails start from the venue. Would recommend visiting.

The peace and quiet that surrounds this place is unmatched anywhere. You are alone in the forest to enjoy the waterfalls. Lucky to have seen the cape parrot and multiple Knysna Turaco’s. Staff is friendly and helpful. Lots of Samango monkeys around which was amazing

Hi Inge, I am afraid not. We have a big Boerboel who is pretty territorial, when I say pretty I mean she is very. Nothing is much less atmospheric than a dog fight. I'm really sorry. Yours Dan
Good morning, thank you for your questions. The bath is practically next to our view point, which is right here on our front lawn. There are many moderate hikes and even a light walk to 39 Steps waterfall. Looking forward to welcoming your group to Hogsback. Fairy Regards, Miki
No problem at all. The bath with the incredible view is still going strong. You just need to let us know when you want to bath and we'll light the fire for you.
We can organise mountain bike rental for you, also when you get here. Easy.
Bridal Veil falls is the waterfall that we can hear from the backpackers. It is possible to walk to the top in about 15 minutes, or the bottom of the falls through the Auckland nature reserve, via The Big Tree and it takes about an hour.
The Seymour Dam is nice bit not really worth the effort. The road to Seymour is all but undrivable, unless you are travelling by hovercraft.
I hope this helps Dan.
Hi there,
Thanks so much for the enquiry. We have just completed a new braai area at our new viewpoint on the cliff edge. It has it's own waterfall and a staggering view of the indigenous forest and the 3 Hogsback Mountains. Not just any old braai area, that's for sure.
There are more places to choose from in the Hogsback area.
