We stayed 5 nights in a three-bedroom self-catering cottage. We liked the set-up and space of the self-catering cottage, gas fireplace, gas weber on the patio, large kitchen/dining table.
No view of the mountains as was stated in the description on Booking.com through which we made the booking.
The patio umbrella was broken (had to ask for a replacement) and not all the crockery was there. The outside bin was full and we were unable to empty the bin inside the kitchen. We had to go to the main hotel complex for wifi and were given an envelope full of passcodes - most of which didn't work.
Noisy other guests, even though at the security entrance there is a board that states no noise.

After the boiled insipid steak that we'd had at the Edge restaurant, the Arminel was food heaven. The receptionist was incredibly helpful and knew the area well enough so that we didn't have to backtrack on our arrival route when we left the Hogsback, but instead took a fantastic and scenic shortcut. The meal was more than enjoyable - entrees were lentil soup with croutons, fish in a cheese sauce followed by roast chicken, roast potatoes, carrots, rice and spinach. There was also a self service salad bar where everything was separate - a great idea, as well as melba toast and bread rolls. Dessert was cheese cake. We would not find fault with anything in this hotel. If you want a comfortable stay with good food, lovely gardens, swimming pool for kids, it has it all. The service in the dining room was wide awake and attentive, not something we'd enjoyed at the Edge restaurant!

This is one of the original hotels in this are of forest and fairytales. It has the main hotel and self catering chalets and is also a watering hole for the locals. The gardens are extensive fronting onto the village road

The Self Catering cottages are well laid out and designed, we could fit in 6 people very comfortably. It had everything that we needed. The settling was fairy like and we enjoyed it very much. Best part was I left my laptop back in the cupboard with very expensive gear and left the Hotel. They called me to say that the page was left behind and returned it to me with everything inside. Thank you Thank you to all the honest staff working there. Its was a truly magical stay.

This was probably one of my worst accommodation picks I have ever made. I'm fairly precious about my choice of stays. I failed dismally on this choice
We stayed in unit 9. It stank so badly that i had to request another room. There were stains everywhere. The entrance was muddy without sufficient hardened surface to walk. There was no bin either
We moved to unit 2 after the receptionist acknowledged that she may have known that they have a problem with that unit.
The dining room felt like we had traveled back in time. It was straight out of the 70's. Terrible food. Old dated decor
I would never stay at this place again even if you paid me . And to be honest, we were in the middle of a forset. I would have expected some kind of a view. It was very pretty but at that altitude and with those potential views you don't want to have 15 meters of visibility.

We celebrated Christmas 2014 in one of the self catering chalets at Arminel Hotel and had a feast. The hotel could not accommodate us for the Christmas meal so we did our own thing for which the beautiful luxury chalet, surrounded by a beautiful garden provided the ideal setting and it ended up a memorable family occasion. The hotel staff was more than willing to assist and Mavis was the most caring hostess one could ask for.
I can recommend the self catering facilities anytime and believe there is no better place to enjoy lovely Hogsback with its unique climate and atmosphere.

My husband I stayed for 2 nights as the hotel was having a mid week special of 450 Rand per accommodation per night which was a large luxurious full self contained 3 bedroom duplex villa. We loved it, we didn't want to leave and could have stayed permanently. The weather was poor as it was raining but we were in the mountains so it was nice to have lots of room to stretch out in as we had to stay indoors. The pool area looked very nice, be great on a hot day.

It is so unfortunate that I find myself writing this review.

I stayed at the Arminel Village with my family about 4 years ago and our experience was wonderful, thus, I thought it would be a great idea to come visit again with a group of friends. However, I could not have been more wrong.

I, as well as my friends were deeply disappointed by the condition of the self catering rooms at the Arminel this weekend. We checked in on Saturday 22 September and were extremely unhappy to find various problems with the chalets allocated to us. The chalets allocated were 13 and 14.

We were shocked to find that a 4 star self catering unit contained towels which had multiple stains on as well as threads coming loose at the ends. The duvet covers as well as the sheets on the beds had holes as well as stains on them.

We found that the fridge in chalet 13 was not working. This was a major problem as we were travelling with meat and needed to store it in. I am certain that you understand the importance of keeping meat at the correct temperature.

The amount of cutlery supplied in chalet 14 was less than the number of people it could accommodate.

The drinking glasses and almost all of the pots/pans and serving dishes had to be thoroughly washed before use as this was clearly not done properly before.

We requested the rooms to be cleaned on Sunday 23 September. It is clear that the cleaning staff have not been sufficiently trained. The trash was not taken out and the bathroom did not look like it had been cleaned either.

All of the mountings on the taps are loose. It is rather annoying to have to hold the tap down so it can be opened properly.

Light bulbs in chalet 14 had previously blown and were not replaced.

As you can see, a multitude of problems were experienced. It is unbelievable that a place that is rated as a 4 star does not live up to that standard. It is gravely disappointing to come on holiday only to find that everything is in such poor condition.

Terrible terrible experience. Would NOT recommend to anyone.

Stayed in a luxury self catering unit, maintenance poor, unit rundown, housekeeping poor, kitchen not well stocked, bedding had holes, only have single beds and the duvet fits exactly on the top of the bed. Also have to pay R100 per day for housekeeping if required. Gardens run down. Reception Staff friendly and helpful.

This hotel is more like a 2 star than 3. While the setting and gardens are pretty the rooms are in dire need of an upgrade. The bathroom was shabby, old and tired. The food, off a set menu, made me feel like I was back at boarding school. The staff were friendly enough but did not go out of their way to make you welcome.
