Detailed Reviews
Arrived in Hogsback with no accommodation booked, were referred to Ingrid at Granny Mouse by one of the locals.
Was a supper amazing stay had several nights of red wine and long chats (and laughs ) with our amazing host Ingrid, a wealth of information about the area and told us what was worth viewing in the area. Accommodation is beautiful and super clean. We were lucky enough to have a suit part to the main house, apparently one of the oldest in the area.
Ingrid garden is just on the next level, no words can describe , just go see for yourself it is like a walk through a private park, truly amazing for the gardener type person.
Will love to return for the flowering of the azaleas , apparently September ish,,,, and when you see the size of the established bushes one can only imagine how splendid it must be.
Granny Mouse House is just perfect

This was our second stay at Granny Mouse House - my wife and I stayed there three years ago. We love Hogsback and we chose to return to Granny House Mouse. We stayed in the self-catering unit with a private garden. The unit is very comfortable and is clean (serviced daily). Ingrid, the owner, was amazing. The gas geyser broke the day before Christmas and she managed to replace it the day after Christmas! Ingrid made another shower available to us in the mean time.
Water was a serious problem and the local dam was completely empty. Somehow, Ingrid managed to supply us with water which was a real challenge.
When we visit Hogsback again, we will look forward to staying at Granny Mouse House again.

Extraneous challenges are part and parcel of the hospitality trade and occasionally several unforeseen things go wrong at once. In such instances, a sense of humour and understanding guests are gifts to be treasured.

Granny Mouse House is a great place to stay. The setting is beautiful and private. We stayed in a Rondavel which was very spacious and had a mini kitchen. The host was very pleasant and gave us plenty of space. Everything was very clean. Even with just starting to recover from the drought the grounds were beautiful. The pool looked inviting.
We stood outside one night and were in awe with all the stars. We walked to the arboretum and St. Patrick on the Hill from GMH.
The only negative we had was the road (R345) through the little village of Hogsback is in horrible shape.

The owner is terribly rude and should not handle customers at all. The room was dirty and the bed was extremely uncomfortable, with springs digging into you. The furnishings were old rattan that was falling apart and the room looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in ages. We were given a heater but told not to use it because it costs a lot to run. The TV had one channel and it didn't even come in all the way clear. We had two little dogs with us, and Ingrid told us horrific stories of how her dogs are planted in her garden-how it's full of dead animals. What person would want to sleep next to a pet cemetery??? The amount of money this place costs is a surf for what you get. I found much better places to stay in Hogsback that are much nicer and much more affordable. Highly recommend to avoid this one!

This woman is a sham. Her website boasts about 4 star rating it shows 4 star rating on adverts throughout town. Property is very neglected and rooms is sad. Have a close look at the signage at her gate.

I stayed in the Rondavel Cottage at Granny Mouse House recently and what a wonderful experience! Excellently equipped and cosy, comfortable cottage, friendly and efficient service (thank you Ingrid) and the most stunning garden. I loved the privacy and tranquility of the setting. In my opinion: excellent value for money. I will definitely visit again.

Booked to stay there based on the ads and the website, which all looked nice. Our room was fine but the other two were dark and dingy. Breakfast was extremely basic, stale cereal and sour milk (which the host said could not be because they had got it fresh that morning, only when she smelt it did she agree, no apology though). The cooked breakfast was one half cooked egg, greasy fatty bacon and a piece of tomato. Overall we were very disappointed and unimpressed with the host's attitude and would warn people to avoid it, there are plenty of other places to stay in Hogsback.

I booked Granny Mouse House expecting, as the website suggests, 4 star accommodation. Unfortunately it is not. A sign on the gate reads that "due to the cost incurred this establishment has not been rated since 2011". Our room was clean and tidy but unfortunately very tired, it did not look much like the website photographs. There were no toiletries available (again mentioned on the website ), although we were eventually given some shampoo that a previous traveler had left behind, but nothing else. Without TV, radio or internet there is very little to do on a cold wet night in Hogsback as most places we tried shut at 8pm. Ingrid's breakfast was a highlight and the garden is quite beautiful.

Response from GH-Info, Guest Relations Manager at Granny Mouse House
Responded 04 Jan 2018
Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxx1 Our website and signage merely mention that we used to hold a 4-star rating and did so for quite some years ( and also that we are as yet the only catered establishment in the area to have achieved this, though others have applied for it and failed) …….before deciding against renewing in 2011. It’s a voluntary process. Since these accolades are not strictly a “reward” for excellence, but also place hugely onerous conditions and costs upon the establishments that seek them, the obvious intention is to attract 4 Star clientele. Following the World banking crisis and several “disastrous to tourism” SA government interventions, the cost/benefit ratio became unsustainable. Our timely intervention and economically prudent adjustments in favour of latter-day lower rates offered are the reason we are still in business 18 years on, while many others went bankrupt. This was a discussion we might and perhaps rather should have had in person had you not been of the ilk to smile and declare all well while present. Most actually recognize they are not paying 4 Star rates, these days, but are happy to discover we’ve done our best to maintain standards not far off. “there were no toiletries available”…………”left-over shampoo” ……”room doesn’t look like the photographs”…………….” No internet( wifi-fi??) ”……… Posting such utter nonsense under cover of anonymity is truly despicable. Breaking news: we don’t control the weather, or the operating hours restaurants choose to keep etc etc. We can only advise readers of this review site to hold this “reviewer” in the contempt he/she deserves.

Poorly provisioned property, the heating tripped the power circuit, the kitchen equipment was chipped and no coffee machine. Generally did not feel cared for as a guest. The staff were lovely and hard working.

Response from GMHinfo, Owner at Granny Mouse House
Responded 26 Jun 2017
Dear ‘peterrathborne62’ thank you for your review on TripAdvisor. We appreciate you taking the time to write your review and sharing your views with us. During your recent stay at Granny Mouse House, you elected to stay in the self-catering Orchard Unit which is separate to the main Guesthouse in the huge Garden. The Orchard Unit has only recently undergone refurbishments and to our knowledge, none of the kitchen utensils or equipment was chipped. If however, you found anything to be amiss we would have been happy if you had told us during your stay and allowed us the opportunity to replace any that did not function properly. We have never, in our 17 years of operation had a complaint regarding a missing coffee machine. We do in fact provide free instant coffee of high quality, not usually expected. We would have been happy to provide a plunger had you let us know you had brought your own special ground blend. In response to your claim of a “poorly provisioned” property, we would like to know what exactly you are referring to, this is an amorphous, unhelpful comment. Our self-catering Orchard Unit contains all the amenities needed for self-catering either on a short-term or longer-term basis. The kitchen contains a proper stove, fridge, wash basin and even a microwave. The Unit is equipped with two separate heaters which is somewhat of an overkill for the size of the Apartment. In addition to this, there is also a dual-control electric blanket on the bed. After your first night’s stay, you complained about being cold and we obliged by providing you with a bigger heater. So, we think your claim of inadequate heating is rather unfounded. Any electrical circuit would trip if an overload of electricity (both heating elements turned on to full blast) occurs, which did in fact occur within an hour of your occupying the unit. The owner lives on site and is available to guests 24/7 so should you have had any questions or special requests she would have been and indeed was more than happy to assist were necessary. Our policy on self-catering (also mentioned on our website) explains it well. Guests who book into the self-catering units are considered desiring of being left alone. Apart from servicing of units, which is always done in a discreet manner and at a convenient time, this wish is respected at all times. Thank you for your compliment regarding the staff, we appreciate when others can see the hard work that is being done to keep the guesthouse operations running smoothly. Kind regards, Ingrid

What more can I say, but, WOW!!!! We had such a relaxing time here and the owner, Ingrid, made us feel at home from the moment we arrived until we left. Nothing asked was too big or too small, considering we arrived a day too early and she took it in her stride and accommodated us without the blink of an eye. Our room had everything we expected and this is truly a 4 STAR place to stay. The perfect place to go to in order to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Thank you, Ingrid, once again, from the both of us for an unforgettable holiday.
