Detailed Reviews
The lodge is situated on a gated private reserve in the Limpopo region (north east) of South Africa about a 6hr drive from OR Tambo airport, Johannesburg.
From the initial welcoming by the duty manager M’Pula the whole checkin process was fast and easy to being shown to our chalet.
The chalet was well appointed and very clean, overlooking the river that flows by the lodge. The bed was comfortable and especially after daily walks in the bushvelt on the reserve. Bathroom had a full size bath and separate shower and came with toiletries. Airconditioning and tea & coffee making facilities were included in the room.
The lodge chef, Percy, was great and catering for a gluten-free diet he produced incredible food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nothing was too much and times were flexible.
The lodge was peaceful and quiet going hand in hand with the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were friendly and always had a smile.
As for the reserve what a fantastic place to explore with fauna and flora in abundance. Note you will not see the big 5 here but everything else makes up. Also ideal for birdwatching.
Overall a very relaxing place to stay.

As a regular traveler I get to experience service offerings from a large number of Lodges, Guest Houses, Hotels etc. I was pleasantly surprised by the service experienced at Mogalakwena River Lodge, it far exceeded my expectation.
From the moment that I arrived till the time I departed.
The friendly staff and owners went above and beyond to attend to my every need and requests.
The food served was fit for a king’s banquet and the rooms could easily accommodate those with the highest expectations when it comes to cleanliness and attention to detail.
Nights were spend around the fire where travel stories were exchanged and friendships forged. This was by far the most memorable experience I had in all my years of traveling. The staff and owners a like made you feel as if you part of the family and not just another guest. I'll definitely recommend the lodge to anybody that's looking for that once in a lifetime experiences; whether traveling for business or in my private capacity I'll most definitely book my stay with Mogalakwena River Lodge again.

We had a great stay at Mogalakwana river lodge! My wife and me visited the lodge to pick up our son who was working at the nearby research station and we stayed for a week at the lodge. Scenery at the river lodge and around is absolutely marvelous and showing amazing African wildlife. Service at the lodge is great by really nice personnel and food is very delicious. Certainly an excellent reason to return again!

No activities that were advertised on webpage was available over a long weekend because the staff wasn't working. Some photos used on the website wasn't even taken on the property itself. Not a variety of beverages and the beer wasn't really cold. When asked for beers on ice, it was presented in a plastic cooler box. Filthy plaster on the side of the pool. As guests we had to wipe off the outside cushions on the chairs, full of dust and leaves. The blow dryer was broken. No 2 point plugs in the room to charge your phone. Remaining staff was very helpful and friendly under the circumstances. Food was good. Lovely room.

Unfortunately - in all the marketing advertising about the lodge, both the lodge and Bookings.com failed to mention that the access road was totally unsuitable for a standard SUV vehicle, in this case we have a VW Tiguan. 30 kms of extreme corrugation and strewn with rocks which would cause damage to sump and who knows what else. We were advised by a farmer in Alldays who knows the road well that we would never make it in our vehicle - which incidentally only has 8000kms on the clock so is a current model. In addition, Bookings.com mentions that the lodge is 1.8 from the centre of Alldays - the reason why we booked as we were on our way to the BOtswana border the next day. In fact it is 10kms out of Alldays, and then the further 30kms on an unpassable road.
We were told by the same farmer that the lodge is beautiful and we would enjoy it - we just couldn't get there. After a very stressful search in Alldays we were able to find accommodation at Baobab Lodge - very comfortable and went out of their way to assist us. Highly recommend them.
Still waiting for a response from Bookings.com about a refund.

What a nice place to stay. The hospitality and the accommodation are great. A blanket of peace falls over you as soon as you get out of the car. The lodge is spacious, clean and the bed sleeps wonderfully. The staff are very friendly and the meals are prepared with care. We we will definitely come back here!

Great food. Especially the chips, they were amazing. Great service from the manager, she really made my wife and myself feel really special. The one bad thing was the gown, it was hard/rough, it wasn't soft at all.

Another unforgettable stay at this lovely lodge. The real benefit is it is attached to a research facility with incredible staff. Spending time with the amazing Jan, one of the researchers was the definite highlight of this trip. He went out of his way to show us interesting fauna. He is an all-rounder, but what he doesn't know about crocodiles, snakes and arachnids, including scorpions and spiders, isn't worth knowing. Thank you to Jan and the lodge staff for making this a memorable visit.

The lodge was a bit hard to find with our gps, but worth persevering. The staff is very frindly and the views are stunning. We have had wonderfull meals in a great atmosphere. The bushwalk was a nice experience. We would have liked to visit the craft centre, but it was closed during the weekend. All of this had made it a wonderfull experience where we would love to come back to.
