An imaginative journey that began over two decades ago, the Soneva story continues with Soneva Jani, the brand’s newest luxury resort offering. Inspired by a word that means 'wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani encompasses a collection of Water Villas and Island Sanctuaries set within a lagoon of crystal clear waters, fringed by pristine beaches and blanketed in lush tropical greenery. The highlight of the islands that the resort calls home is the 5.6 kilometre private lagoon that surrounds it; an awe-inspiring azure spectacle that inspires a sense of calm. Soneva Jani, located in the Medhufaru lagoon in the Noonu Atoll, comprises five islands, the largest of which is Medhufaru, which is 150 acres in size. The resort can be reached by a scenic 40 minute seaplane flight direct from Male International Airport, a 60 minute speedboat ride from Soneva Fushi, or by a leisurely half-day cruise from Soneva Fushi onboard Soneva in Aqua. The resort’s soft opening is planned for October 01, 2016, while the official opening date is fixed at November 05, 2016. Bookings are now available from October 01, 2016 onwards.

Our stay with Soneva was split between Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, and it was great being able to compare the two. We loved both for different reasons and would be more than happy to come back to both! Soneva currently had COVID protocols that, once completed (including a double PCR test that made us feel super safe, given all guests had to pass the same protocol), allowed guests to roam the property mask-free. It made our vacation seem like a true vacation from the pandemic where we could trust everyone around us was healthy and we were isolated from the rest of the world! At Soneva Jani, we stayed in a Two Bedroom Water Reserve with Slide in Chapter 2 and loved the private setting on the new jetty. There are still soft opening rates for the Chapter 2 villas so it's a great time to check them out! I had read a lot of reviews ahead of our stay and it seemed like Soneva took into account guest feedback with the design of the new villas - light switches were easy to identify, for example. That's a pretty cool thing to see a property do, since it's not often a property can take into account guest feedback so actively in their new designs. We didn't get to see a Chapter 1 villa to compare, but we spent a lot of time at Chapter 1 for the water and The Gathering. The Gathering is the main hub of the resort and a lot of your meals and activities will either be based there or start from there. Closer to the Chapter 2 villas, you have the South Beach which houses some other restaurants including The Crab Shack which was our favorite by FAR - make sure to order your crab split in half so you can have each half prepared in a different sauce! We thought Cinema Paradiso and the restaurant right in front of it, Director's Cut, to be a really cool and unique experience to Soneva Jani, and the food there was also great - the tasting menu is a must-have. If there's one activity I highly recommend, it's booking time with the on-site photographer, Ahmed, for a photography + drone session. He's got a great eye and the packages are rather affordable, making it an incredible souvenir to take home from the trip! He turned around out photos lightening fast as well, and was amazing to work with. We'd LOVE to return and check out a Chapter 1 villa to compare, but I feel you can't go wrong in either section!

Dear Michelle G, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! We are very happy that your stay with us was a memorable experience! Our COVID-19 procedure definitely makes vacationing enjoyable again. There is nothing as wonderful as to roam mask-free on our beautiful and lush island. Our brand new over-water villas in Chapter 2 are definitely unique. Some adjustments have indeed been made based on guest feedback from Chapter 1, in order to improve the experience. Soneva Jani is a beautiful long island that offers 2 different sides – Chapter 1 with the North Beach and the Gathering, Overseas, So Starstruck and Chapter 2 with the South Beach and So cold, Crab Shack, So Primitive.Your comments about Chef Priyantha’s Crabs is really heart-warming. We will make sure to pass it on to him. Cinema Paradiso is one of the most popular experiences. You get to watch a movie with Bluetooth headphones to avoid disturbing the surrounding nature, after a delicious Japanese meal in Director’s Cut. Jai, our in-house Digital Storyteller captures the most magical moments for our guests and it is always a joy to look back at them and remember an unforgettable holiday in the Maldives. We’d also LOVE to welcome you in one of our Chapter 1 over-water villas soon! Best wishes, Frederic

There are many amazing properties in The Maldives, but the iconic Soneva Jani resort really does stand out. It’s a whimsical wooden fantasy that takes you a million miles away from the “real world” to another plane of being. Upon my arrival, I stepped off the boat to shimmering bright blue water that was so intense it almost looked fake. My jaw then quite literally dropped when I saw the enormous villas with slides right down into the ocean. I felt as though I had stepped into a kind of dream world - and really, that is exactly what had just happened! In keeping with the sense of playfulness, there is also a charming outdoor cinema where you can enjoy movies on a giant screen in the middle of the sparkling ocean from the comfort of an overwater hammock. Traditional movie theatres just won’t feel the same after this for me. One of the things I loved the most about Soneva Jani was the emphasis on holistic wellness. Not only is there a beautiful spa, as you would expect, but the restaurants focus on fresh, sustainable and health-conscious dining. In fact, there’s even a raw vegan restaurant! As for experiences, Soneva offers everything from private sunrise breakfasts to astronomy cruises late at night. Again, there’s an emphasis on sustainability with activities like coral planting, horticultural garden tours and the world’s first 100% eco-friendly surfing school! Soneva Jani is luxury blended perfectly into the surrounding environment; it’s exactly what an eco-luxe hotel should be. The level of attention is second-to-none when it comes to the decor here. I know without a doubt that this is somewhere I’ll return to time and time again.

Dear Isabella Garofanelli, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! Thank you so much for such an amazing review! We are delighted that you could escape to “another world” and resource yourself to the fullest. Our turquoise lagoon is indeed a sight to behold with colourful fish, sea turtles and rays swimming around. The lagoon slides are always fun – for children and adults! Thank you for highlighting one of our many unique experiences – Cinema Paradiso! Enjoying the light evening breeze on one of the hammocks is definitely a treat after a delicious meal from our overwater Japanese restaurant – Director’s Cut. It’s wonderful that you got to enjoy most of our dining outlets, such as So Wild – our vegan restaurant located in the middle of our organic garden. Most of our vegetables are cultivated there. Soneva’s philosophy revolves around sustainable luxury and a healthy lifestyle. This is reflected in all our dining destinations, experiences, activities and overall resort. Our Hosts and I are definitely looking forward to welcoming you in the future. Best wishes, Frederic

We payed thousands to get and stay here only to have our stay disrupted constantly by a pair of freeloading millennial bloggers who got to stay here for free. How is it that hotel owners don't realize the only people who read blogs are other millennials looking for a free stay. So if you want to shell out big money to listen to some 20-something who paid nothing shout into a selfish stick, stay here.

I visited Soneva Jani to celebrate my 40th birthday, and it was the best decision of my life. Everything about Soneva spoke to how I live my life and what I value. The no shoes, no news lifestyle is a perfect way to operate in paradise. Soneva knocked it out of the park from the villa to the food, staff, and hospitality. As you continue reading, I'm going to break down my stay, and hopefully, my review will answer your questions or inspire you to visit! WHAT I LOVED What I loved about villa 24 was the comfortable bed. Every night I slept like a baby, and they provided a variety of pillows from soft to firm. The office space was great for me to set up my remote office, so when I needed to knock out a few work things, I could step in there to handle business and leave it all behind once I finished. The weather was perfect during my visit, and the humidity was ideal for enjoying the outdoor shower. The kitchen has a lovely coffee machine and comes with a robust selection of mini-bar items. It seems like everything standouts in the villa, but the retractable roof is mindblowing. To be able to lay in bed and stare at clear blue skies or the milky way at night is a dream. The water slide brought me back to my childhood, and I probably slide down it 100 times! You can only use it during high tide! I appreciated having to take a PCR test upon arrival and quarantine in the villa until my negative results came back. It has been over a year since I've been able to walk outside amongst other people without a mask, and being at Soneva made me realize how much I miss it. And the rockstar of the stay was my Barefoot Bulter, Shyma. She was the sweetest person and always made things happen. She has a caring spirit and made my time worry-free. WHAT DID I DO Walking to the Gathering to eat breakfast felt like an activity, but here are few things that I loved about my stay. Surfing was epic! I live in LA, and the majority of the year, I surf in a wetsuit. The Indian Ocean water is warm, and it was freeing only to wear my Kavata Swimwear board shorts and rash guard. They had plenty of eco-friendly surfboards to choose from, and traveling without a surfboard is priceless. The Cinema Paradiso was a dope experience. They have a movie screen and a Japanese restaurant that sits over the water. The seafood is fresh and delicious! You watch the film using Bluetooth headphones, so the audio doesn't disturb the island's wildlife. The consciousness of Soneva to be low-impact in every way possible is phenomenal. I took a yoga class, and it was one of my best practices to date. Only three people in the class allowed the instructor to give consistent adjustments, and he put my body in positions I have never reached before. The spa treatment was excellent and complimented my yoga practice. The therapist knocked out a lot of tight areas, and the tranquil setting was refreshing. FOOD Every morsel of food I ate was fresh, savory, and had me asking for seconds. The property has a variety of dining options, you can order room service and eat in your sunken living, which was terrific, but I want to talk about a few of my favorites. The Crab Shack is located on the beach, and of course, the crab is delicious! Try the curry and spicy crab. So Starstruck is hosted by an Astronomer who guides you through the constellation while dinner is served. The sky has zero pollution, and the stars light up the sky. My favorite meal was the BBQ beach dinner which was on my birthday. The setting is dreamy, with a pathway of triangle lights leading me to my table and surrounding it, and the stars amplify the ambiance. The chef prepared my dinner on the beach a few yards from my table. The moment that will stick with me forever was when they surprised me with a red velvet birthday cake! I was a seven-year-old again! LOL I couldn't have asked for a more perfect birthday! I felt blessed to make it to a milestone age, and being at Soneva allowed me to relax, reflect on my life and enjoy the day! I could have stayed longer than the four nights and probably still would have left wanting to go back! I didn't get to do everything they offered but what I did do was gratifying. I found my happy place at Soneva Jani!

Dear World Wide Nate, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! Thank you for such a fantastic feedback! We are delighted that you have enjoyed our paradise island so much. Our guests are very fond of our No News No Shoes philosophy which gives a feeling of being grounded and closer to nature. Thank you for highlighting our very unique overwater villas. They are comfortable, spacious, luminous and well equipped as you have mentioned with the coffee machine, the retractable roof that brings stars into your dreams, and the lagoon water slide that is as fun for children as it is for adults! We are happy to hear that you felt safe with our very strict COVID-19 procedures. It is a luxury these days to roam around freely without a mask. It is very kind of you to recognize our amazing Barefoot Butler, Shayma. We will forward this comment to her. The Director’s Cut (Japanese restaurant) with its Cinema Paradiso is one of the many outlets we have to offer on the island and it is definitely an experience like none other. All our guests enjoy it very much. We will pass on your rewarding feedback to our F&B Team and especially Chef Priyantha from Crab Shack, Chef Naila for your unforgettable birthday beach barbecue, Chef Rana and our In-house astronomer Maavin from So Stastruck. It is great that you have been able to relax and enjoy a stress-free vacation with our Spa Hosts during yoga sessions and treatments. Looking forward to welcome you back anytime! Best wishes, Frederic

When we arrived at Soneva, instead of a warm welcome by the Management of the resort, we were asked to go directly to our villa and learnt that we had to be PCR tested again, when we had it done just before at Cheval Blanc and only had a 20 min private boat trip, alone, to come to Soneva! We were then asked to stay in our villa in quarantine until the negative result would be back. We were not aware of this rule (Nor our travel agency ?) and didn’t expect it as we went to several other islands without this drastic condition. We obviously wouldn’t have come should we have known. This ruined our arrival at the resort, leaving Cheval Blanc with a so friendly management and gifts still in our hands and arriving there as a kind of pariahs, had a cold shower effect on us. The following day the results arrived and we met our butler Yasir. He saved our stay at Soneva Jani. He was professional, efficient, respectful and knowledgeable. Always ready to help us and take care of our needs. Perfect. He made our stay acceptable. The villa although very rustic, is large and comfortable, but coming from Cheval Blanc, it was obviously not at the same level of quality. The villas where we were all had a water slide. We tried the slide twice but didn’t like it really, the problem is that the villa just next to us was occupied by a family with many kids who of course enjoyed the slide and were screaming all day as they were using it constantly. Moreover, as we were in the villa 18 we were in front of the arrival jetty, and one day we counted more than 100 times the boats arriving and living the jetty at full speed. We were informed that this was the shuttles linking two parts of the island and they had to go back and forth (Full speed !!). The noise was awful. We didn’t like it at all, and we could not stand staying on our terrace anymore. The equipment in the Gym is the oldest I have seen for a long time and surprisingly, there is no WIFI (!). Eric the coach was nice and friendly but for the price we pay to come to this resort we deserve a much better equipment. This is substandard, to say the least.. The island is very long, so to go to the some of the restaurants like the Japanese one or the crab shack, it takes 10 min by buggy car just to go there and 10 min to come back after waiting for your buggy. This is why, after having tried the Japanese one, with a huge cinema screen in front of you (!), and the Crab Shack, we decided to only go to the Swedish restaurant to which we could walk. The food was excellent and unusual, thanks to the Chef Joakim. The service was perfect thanks to Joy. While eating at this restaurant, we had the visit for 5 min of the resort manager. This was the only person from the management who came to talk to us during our stay. None at the arrival and none at our departure. The butler was there, but what a difference with the other resorts that we visited. In summary this resort is not for us. We will not return. It suits obviously a lot of people, but we pass. We refuse to pay this price for what we get; the value doesn’t match our criteria. Value 3/5

Dear jmLondon845, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! We sincerely apologize that you seem to not have been informed by your travel agent prior to your arrival, about our welcome procedure. As part of our COVID safety procedure, the “arrival Barefoot Butler” for the day will welcome and escort the guests to their villa and cater to their wishes until the negative PCR test results are out. This ensures the safety of all our guests and hosts and makes our paradise island so much more enjoyable knowing that you can roam around freely without a mask and fully enjoy your holidays. This information is always communicated by our Reservation’s Team to the Travel Agents and guests. Thank you for your kind words regarding your Barefoot Butler Yasir. He is indeed very passionate about his work and extremely thoughtful and proactive. We are delighted to hear that you have enjoyed the space and comfort, our unique overwater villas provide. We definitely have a different offer compared to Cheval Blanc in terms of villas which portrays our very different philosophies. But it saddens us that our boat movement was too noisy. We would have been more than happy to arrange a villa had we been informed. Our gym has four-year-old top range equipment and we are in the process of building a brand new wellness center. I will forward your kind words to our in-house trainer Eric. Thank you for highlighting our Chef Joakim and his Overseas restaurant. This pescatarian cuisine is the signature of the Swedish 2 Michelin Star Chef, Mathias Dahlgren. We look forward to having the opportunity to welcome you in the future. Best wishes, Frederic
