Really good place, I originally came here on my way up to Mozambique and just seemed to keep coming back. Came for a week, spent 3 months, off and on.

Been to many, many backpackers & for me there are 3 things that set this place apart:

- it's in the biggest house, with the biggest garden I've ever seen a backpackers in. Really spacious, lots of places if you want to hide away by yourself, a feeling of freedom.

- Sergio & Paula just run it as a sideline business, mainly for the social aspect, I think. They like to party. A very genuine sort of friendliness here.

- It is CLEAN. Spotlessly.

Almost forgot - Paula's food is great, she cooks better than my mom.

Sundowners Backpackers hostel is the definitely my favorite hostel i've come across in my travels around the world. It's CLEAN, beautiful, completely peaceful, and so comfortable! What really makes this place even better is the incredible staff who are so kind and welcoming. Make sure you get to know these beautiful people!
It's also just a short ride from a lot of fun things - markets, stores, restaurants, movie theater, caves/hiking.

Paula&Sergio, the only thing that could possibly improve that place is a coffee pot! ;) love to you all!

A must stop if you are in Swaziland!!!
We spent 3 nights with Sergio and Paula at Sundowners. The day we arrived there was a Braai being put on that was some of the best food we have had. All lovingly cooked by Paula and Sergio. The place is a big converted family house that sits on a small hill. Plenty of places to sit and relax a beautiful pool with lounge chairs. A covered well stocked bar, a large and clean communal kitchen and the nicest staff around. Pinky makes sure you are comfortable and happy all day long. Sergio and Paula can give you all sorts of advice about Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa. The walls in the pool room are covered with places and things to do all over Southern Africa. We would stay here again!

This place has had mostly very good reviews so far, but I thought that in the interests of balance, I'd write my opinion of it.

I had an ok time there, but it's not all it's cracked up to be. It is certainly spacious and clean, with good rooms, and the owner Sergio (when he's around) is certainly friendly and is likely to invite you for a free meal.

However:

- the location is terrible. It's miles from anywhere, and the view is of a working quarry: huge piles of rock, heavy earthmoving equipment and a dynamited hillside.

- most of their customers are volunteers in the US Peace Corps. Sundowners is their hangout place. While some of them are nice, they're not travelers, and as a group they monopolize the place, especially with regards to things like watching The Kardashians on the TV 24/7.

- Toby, the old guy who runs it, appears to be psychotic. He regaled us with stories of the famous songs he'd written (such as Rain In Africa by Toto), yet when we looked on the internet, his name wasn't mentioned. He told fib after fib, and then tried to impress us by telling us about the people he'd killed, and all the guns he owned, some of which were on the premises. I really did not feel very comfortable with such a person having a gun on the property.

So all in all, I suppose it could be considered fairly nice, with good rooms. But I didn't like the manager at all, and I'd rather stay at a backpackers with a better view, and a location where everything's within walking distance.

This place was clean, comfortable and affordable but there is nothing close by. The nearest shops are about 4 km walk. It's on a long stretch of road between Manzini and Mbabane and they have no wifi. You'll need to get a chapa into town for everything. Chapa's are cheap and up and down the road quite frequently. The location is beautiful and the staff is friendly.

The location were great for the reed dance and the place was very clean, spacious, food & alcohol were impeccable in terms of quality and price.

I was there for 4 nights and met many volunteers from PeaceCorp, business travellers, young couples from Europe and the team. I enjoy conversations with people so it was great for me. There were also many party animals playing drinking games behind the restaurant if you are into that.

Sergio's (owner) wife Paula cooked authentic Portuguese dinner for all guests for 2 out of the 4 nights that I was there! It was so tasty and yes, best things in life are for free!!

The manager Toby went beyond his call of duty and introduced me to his friend (who is an official photographer of the reed dance event!) to take myself and 2 other tourists to see the dance. It was unbelievable and we were able to go into 'media only' areas to watch the dance during rehearsals! This meant I got myself a selfie with the Swazi-king.

On my last day, my driver from TransMagnificient "forgot" to pick me up. I was devastated. Toby's gf Donna went and bought me chocolate, Mark upgraded me and let me stayed for free, Brian (their accountant) was telling me jokes to try to cheer me up. I never felt like home anywhere else like this (beside my birth home in Taiwan of course).

Toby & Sergio - Your team is unbelievable and I hope more travellers will have the opportunity to experience your generosity and passion that you have to share with the world.

Currently Sundowners is undergoing renovation and hence the restaurant was not available. I had the chance to book a unit with double bed for myself and my daughter (4) during this period.

All was clean and very convenient. Especially the staff is very helpfull and thoughtfull. I can recommend the Sundowners and it will be even a better experience, if the restaurant is operational as Matsapha Shopping Centre is around 7 Km away. I have been told, they make the best pizza. Something to look forward.

If you require Wifi-Internet connection, this only works in the lounge and is very slow. No connection to the rooms. But not a concern, if you do not require permanent connectivity.

What would be a nice consideration is a playground for children. But then I trust the main clientiele are backpackers and they do not use the playground.

I would recommend Sundowners as well for business travellers. Especially if you are out during the day and only need a basic room and bed for the night.

A hostel with a kitchen, swimming pool and a bar. All staff are very friendly, and the rooms were spacious and clean. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for renovations, but the owner drove us to get some take out.

We arrived right at dusk on what we thought was going to be a 1 night stay at Sundowners. Turns out the lax atmosphere and close proximity of Mbabane, the Cultural Village, Swazi Tours and meeting great friends and the owners got us to stay another night. The restaurant, essentially attached to the hostel, was a great place to meet for coffee in the morning or for drinks after dinner while we played some pool outside on the patio. Great central location for Bushfire festival, too.

We stayed here for two nights while traveling from Mozambique to Durban,South Africa.
Price was ok but no wifi and bugs.
The adjacent restaurant was a God send

Good food at very fair prices. Problem is it closed up early.
The place is in the middle of nowhere! And I mean it. It's on a main road but it rained so much we never left.

Not sure if I'd recommend it?
