Quiet Mountain is an oasis of calm and tranquility in the foothills of Mageliesberg which is about an hours drive from Johannesburg. With a bit of luck you wont be able to find it so it will remain a haven for me and my friends when we holiday in South Africa. Owned and run by two engaging men it is more of a country house than a hotel, with beautiful gardens and lovely staff. We have just returned from our third visit and it retains its charm and atmosphere.
The few 5 star country hotels in this area, just a one hour drive from Johannesburg, are now essentially conference centres with hotel facilities. To find a Country House that offers luxury, gourmet cuisine and serene surroundings is rare, but Quiet Mountain is such a place. John and Terence opened Quiet Mountain 19 years ago and by word of mouth this is where the discerning traveler stays. Children are not allowed, so the lodge set on 360 acres is aptly named. See their website for all the facts, it is all true. Ivan G
Quiet Mountain has become like a home from home. We arrive, have a light lunch in the gardens with a glass or two of wine, enjoy a siesta in our room, have a short walk as the day cools and then wait eagerly for dinner. The food is good, honest, home cooked fare using fresh ingredients from the garden wherever possible. Wines and spirits are well priced too. So what's there to do? Not a lot actually other than lie by the sparkling pool, walk or read..which is why it's called Quiet Mountain. Thankfully no TV's in the rooms but there is WiFi should you feel cut off from civilisation. John and Terence are wonderful hosts and the fact that so many guests return over and over again (we've done about 25 visits we think) is testimony to the quality of the experience.
We have enjoyed many weekends at this beautiful little country home & never seem to tire of it! The accommodation is very homely & comfy, the food superb, the gardens a joy & all in all a really relaxing place to escape the rat race of Johannesburg. Cant be faulted & cant wait to return!!!
We have now been to Quiet Mountain 4 times and each time has been fantastic!!! This last time we need some R&R after our wedding which was busy and rather hectic - John and Terence provided just what we needed!! The food was divine, service excellent, John funny, carming and just entertaining, our room an oasis and overall we had a wonderful time!!! Quiet Mountain is truely a gem close to Johannesburg and just the kind of retreat to recharge yourself!!
Well, we can only reiterate what has been said already! In fact I would defy anyone to say anything horrid about this oasis. The absolutely 150% perfect getaway for a weekend of peace, beauty, GREAT food (go hungry) and some real funny entertainment...Mein host is a laugh a minute. The hiking is good and they pack a terrific picnic lunch for you as well. Definitely top of our list for a quick weekend break.
My partner and I have been visiting Quiet Mountain since 1995 and still love it. If you want to get away from the madness of the city it has to be the greatest option. The gardens are glorious, the beds comfortable, the food delicious and the peace is unbeatable. The owners of Quiet Mountain have resisted the temptation of commercialising so it only has 7 rooms and is never crowded. Their attention detail, the warmth of the staff, the beautiful dining room and the amazing meals leave wonderful memories. Another wonderful thing about a Quiet Mountain visit is that it is only just over one hour's drive from Johannesburg.
Read the reviews, but was not expecting such good food, service and environment. Recommend the walk up the hill - saw Kudu Bull close up the view from the top is well worth the effort; plus it helps make room for more great food.
we have stayed at Quiet Mountain twice and will return again next year, God willing, and it is just perfect. In effect a peaceful B&B in delightful grounds with a pool and wonderful views of the mountains. Run by two charismatic and eccentric men one of whom cooks and the other performs, there is no other word for it, as front of house.
Quiet Mountain is a little treasure close to Johannesburg far away from all the noise and fuss!!! The food is divine and the service excellent!!!! Order a tray of tea and it appears within 5 mins with homemade biscuits/ cookies too!!! The gardens are beautiful and add to the sense of peace and harmony and take the walk up the mountain - that is an experience. The G&T's with fresh sandwhichs when we got back was excellent. John as the host is a wonder, he will make you laugh and feel most welcome! And Terence's food is outstanding - don't even try to worry about the diet when you are there :) This was our 3rd visit and we will be back in Dec again - a rare gem!!!
