Steynshoop Mountain Lodge is a luxury house on a private estate, beautifully situated on an elevated site in the scenic Magaliesberg valley near Hekpoort. It has superb views of the magnificent mountain range, cliffs and bush surroundings of the Magaliesberg Nature Reserve, of which it forms part. The lodge's bedrooms are all en-suite and luxuriously appointed with air-conditioning, DSTV and DVD players. Many of our guests comment that it has a uniquely “Out of Africa” feel. It is an exclusive and intimate guest lodge with understated, elegant interiors. The lodge, an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, falls within a world heritage site. Guests have access to a kilometre of the magnificent mountain range on the estate, for walks and hiking. Arrangements may be made for longer hikes over the adjoining extensive area owned by the Mountain Club of South Africa which includes famous sites such as the Castle Gorge (provided that they are accompanied by a guide from the lodge). The entire estate is situated within the proclaimed Magaliesberg Nature Reserve. It is full of natural bush vegetation, including thousands of wild protea trees, and has extensive natural game including bush buck, nyala, mountain reedbuck, warthogs, baboons, monkeys and leopard. Birdlife is extensive. There are frequent sightings of eagles and vultures from a nearby cliff colony. Jackal and hyena cries, baboon barks and sounds of the surrounding wildlife are prolific. Steynshoop Mountain Lodge provides the ideal break from city life and stress - drift off to the sounds of the African bush and awaken to a chorus of birds. Enjoy a quiet drink and look out for Nyala, bushbuck or mountain reedbuck coming to drink at the game waterhole, overlooked by the gazebo. If you wish to discover totally private tranquillity with superior service Steynshoop Mountain Lodge is a rare find.

We had the most amazing wedding wedding week end at the lodge. Everything was top notch from the food on the Friday, breakfasts & food at wedding was to die for. Staff very accommodating with everything we needed. Hannelie was the best wedding planner, she comes highly recommended & makes sure that your wedding is something to remember. We booked the both lodges for the whole week end & all our guests had a splendid time & just loved the place. can highly recommend Steysnhoop for your wedding & a week end break away!!!

Nowhere in South Africa there is a place like Steynshoop Mountain and Valley Lodge.

True peace and tranquility is the thought that comes to mind.

This place is out of this world. So unique and beautiful and we couldn't have made a better choice for our wedding destination.

Scenic views, amazing accommodation and outstanding venue! We can truly say that we receive the most professional service from this venue. This was the best decision ever made.

Except for the 5 star place Steynshoop is, the manager and the venue wedding coordinator , Pieter and Hanneli, was an absolute pleasure and dream to work with.

We received top quality service, so much kindness, help, understanding during Covid, nothing was ever to much work or not possible and they went out of our way to accommodate us in every way!

For that we can truly thank Hanneli and Pieter for the most amazing day, it was out of this world, so beautiful and an absolute fairytale!

I would definitely recommend Steynshoop Mountain and Valley Lodge!

We had are wedding at Steynshoop in April 2022.
A fairytale wedding venue with helpful and well-trained staff. The venue is neat, picturesque and makes for breathtaking photos. It is the best place for a lovely family wedding with enough sleeping space for all the guests. The food is top notch. I would definitely recommend the venue, whether for a weekend break or for a function.

My partner and I required a secluded place, outside of the city at an affordable rate to just unwind after a very busy first quarter of the year and we happened to stumble upon this beautiful mountain lodge, nestled at the heart of the Magaliesburg mountain range & we gave it a try.

Their autumn special (accommodation inclusive of breakfast and dinner) package appealed to us. There is a gravel road that took us about 22 minutes to get to the lodge from the main road turn off so be patient and don't rush. I must say, although uncomfortable at times, it's well maintained and not the worst we've been exposed to. The other negative thing about the gravel road area is that, it's a one-way only path, especially as one approached the lodge, and we strongly advise motorists to drive patiently along this road and be cautious at all times as we encountered an incident upon us departing the lodge where another motorist came rushing up towards us to a point where there was a deadlock and we then had to reverse a significant distance back in order to allow the other car to pass through.

Upon our arrival at the lodge, we were warmly greeted by the manager, Pieter, who even assisted us to carry our bags to our room. The place is scenic and peaceful, though guests are cautioned about monkeys who roam the area.

We booked into Room 7, which is upstairs and has an outside patio that offered a remarkable view of the Magaliesburg mountain. Very spacious bathroom with both a shower and bathtub available, a fire extinguisher which is close to an emergency exit were also in the vicinity. The additional safety aspects that the lodge offered were a plus. The room comes with a king-sized bed, coffee station and desk. All the electrical socket points were excellently placed on each side of the bed. Position stand (and height thereof) of the TV was also perfect because at times we easily find lodges having the TV at a higher than normal height which makes for an uncomfortable viewing. We had a couple of great DVDs to catch up on so it was ideal for us to get a place that comes standard with a DVD player. We found that it's quite a hassle getting a place with a standard DVD player and Steynshoop Mountain Lodge is one that offered it standard - that on its own was another plus.

It would have been extra nice to have the dining area a bit more spacious since moving around that area was a bit of a challenge. Food (three course meals, unique for each night) including a full English breakfast was wonderfully prepared and served. We noted that on the night we were there, only one lady by the name of Mita was serving everyone & this also occurred on the following night with Mapule, it would have been great having an extra pair of hands at the same time to assist the person on shift with attending to all of the guests' needs and requirements. Hats off to them! Mapule was also able to make arrangements to prepare and package our dinner in the room for us on the second night, since we had to go attend a concert and we got back to the lodge a little after dinner time, that extra mile she went to was appreciated and gave the lodge great credits from us service-wise.

Attention to detail, setting of the reading and relaxing station area was neat and seeing the good literature book 'The Magaliesburg' by Vincent Carruthers with insights on the Geology of the area was a lovely sight and a fantastic read.

We are all about scenic views (best view of the Magaliesburg Mountain range by far - beautiful hiking trials are also available), good service at an affordable rate and this place safely and comfortably offered us those with ease.

Visited Steynshoop to celebrate my dad's 80 th birthday. We could not have found a better place for this family get together. The setting is magnificent. The lodge is warm and comfortable. We put the kids upstairs and 'grown ups' downstairs. Elcid the chef is super talented and met our every request willingly as did Pieter the general manager. We will be back !!!

The experience: Steynshoop speaks to all the senses in a memorable way, with wonderful natural sights, tangible silence interchanged only with bird-song, culinary delights, fresh mountain air and a temperate climate.

Location: This charming, though unpretentious lodge is perfectly situated for discerning guests who crave the quiet beauty of unspoilt nature within only an hour's drive from the big cities. It is well paired with a visit to Maropeng, being located within the larger Cradle of Humankind and with close-up views of the age-old Magaliesberg and the valley below. Guests interested in geology and history would be as charmed as outdoor enthusiasts and those who simply need a romantic getaway.

Nature: In addition to the natural abundance described on the website, Steynshoop boasts a few ponds and an attractive large waterfeature filled with beautiful waterlilies. These in turn attract more butterflies and birds. And then there's the watering hole close to the lodge for four-legged friends and the likes.

Rooms: The fact that rooms are fully equipped, including airconditioning and DStv, is great, but the inviting setting leaves one with little desire to remain indoors. Welcome detail include flasks of ice water and fluffy white gowns.

More detail: Much thought seems to have gone into the detail in the lodge. There is a subtle emphasis on catering for the inquisitive and intelligent guest, not only through the provision of a fascinating folder with environmental and historical information, but also with a variety of interesting and accessible reading material.

Food: A set menu is served at dinner, in a comfortable and stylish dining area. Medium-sized, but delicious meals are tastefully presented. A standard buffet breakfast is included in the price.

Take note: Don't be rushed to complete the last 6km of your journey and don't travel with your sports car. (The gravel road is a small price to pay for the pleasures at your destination.)

Bottom-line: As a South African, I would be proud to recommend this destination to any international visitor who would like a positive, reasonably priced, but real experience of our country.

We spent the weekend of the 2/10/15 to the 4/10/2015 at Steynshoop for a company strategy seminar. This is a great venue if you are looking for a peaceful place with no distractions so you are able to concentrate during the sessions, but also tranquil so you can recharge during the breaks or "chill" sessions. Good food and friendly staff. however there is no "shop" at all so you do need to take everything with you.

I was told this would be the perfect short break for us before returning to Ireland. I was told correctly! In honesty, the website and images do not do this justice, and having read the last review, I was entering with trepidation. However, I am delighted to inform that the chef (Elcid I believe is his name) we had the weekend is the one that had left for a short while, and the food was exquisite. The service is unpretentious, the views to die for, and when told about the neighboring Steynshoop Lodge (which is self catering), the owner himself could not have been more gracious in showing us around. Clearly a lot of love, time and attention has gone into these properties, and I believe he also owns some cottages in the Karoo (will make a note to visit those next time round). There is still a bit of work to be done as far as finer points of service delivery, but they are minor and easily fixed. Just one hour away from Johannesburg lies the perfect short escape for anyone who might want to acclimatise before they set out to explore the rest of South Africa, or as in our case to dust off the tiredness, and leave refreshed and well taken care of.

Fantastic location on the slopes of the Magaliesberg, and a beautiful property with thatched roof and lovely ambience. Wonderful views. Two nature trails/hikes from the house - we did one, signposting could have been better but great opportunity to visit the top of the range. Staff were friendly and service was good. Only slight criticism was on the food: generally it was good, and nice to see wines being served at a reasonable rate when a lot of places tend to rip you off, but our request for vegetarian - which was met - seemed to be treated as 'weird and exotic' by the staff, and some of the food preparation for the veggies was a 'little too well done'. All in all, great place for a long weekend to escape from the city.

We decided to stay somewhere very near Johannesburg airport for a few days immediately after the 11 hour flight so that we could unwind immediately before heading off to more distant attractions in South Africa. We knew next to nothing about the Magliesberg mountain range area and thought we'd be staying somewhere nice but not really a destination in its own right. Kashan Lodge in particular and the Magliesberg area in general totally exceeded our expectations on every count and is most definitely on our list of places to go back to on our next trip to South Africa.

The lodge has a magnificent setting halfway up a mountain with stunning views up and down. You could spend the whole day just looking at the view and watching the colours change. The accommodation is very comfortable and utterly relaxing. There is loads to see in the area and we particularly liked the nearby elephant and cheetah sanctuary/research centres. The food at Kashan is FANTASTIC and we thought much better than another very well-known hotel nearby. The birdlife totally blew me away and, above all, the people running the place could not have more friendly or welcoming. We only spent three nights there and were very, very sorry to leave and wished we had spent double that time there.

It's definitely on my list for a revisit. A perfect way to start a South African holiday if you're flying to Johannesburg.
