A perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life , the lush green landscape eases the mind and soul. All staff from the reception, spa, kitchen & house keeping where very friendly and accommodating, the rooms are very spacious & neat , bathrooms are modern and spotless (just the way I like it)

Stayed in the Superior Suite which was simply the best.

Food was good & was very impressed that even though the menu was limited, they catered to the best.

Will definitely be visiting again.

The spa facilities were amazing- we loved the flotation tank and the indoor heated pool. The food at the restaurant was delicious and there was great variety. The service was excellent-with friendly staff and thoughtful touches:) The only thing we could recommend is for the rooms to be upgraded/ updated as the price per night is quite high.

Arranged a 69th birthday retreat for my only sister and it was the best decision ever. Far from the madding crowd and most definetly "the road less travelled!"
The entire hotel, rooms, self catering units..all blend into the beautiful tranquil farm scene altogether..and yet inside it boasts 5 star comfort of carpeted heated flooring, heated tile flooring in the baths and toilet, the most rustic luxurious linen and decor, the best teas and coffees in the room..even the yummiest angel wedgewood cookies!
Amazingly quiet, serene and you can practically hear a pin drop! No traffic, no cars allowed in the rooms areas. quiet electric golf carts serve as concierge and passenger pick ups. The fordoun hotel leaves nothing to chance. From the time you book, the room preferances, mealtime booking, spa bookings are all pre arranged. Well organised, well trained staff at your service 24/7.
Meals are fine dining at dinner. We met chef as he arranged halaal food for us and even a beautiful carrot cake for the birthday girl. What a 5 star treatment!!! Will be back for sure

Rooms where not cleaned at all, bathroom was not clean. The same dead fly was on the bathroom floor from arrival till I checked out. Room had a mildew smell. This was supposed to be the best room at the property. The garden in the room veranda was not maintained, trees where not trimmed, water pond was green with frogs and mosquitos. The outside shower was full of spiders and beetles. The bathroom ceilings has insects all over. I am positive, that if you would go to this very room today, you will still find all these faults. Your prices for accommodation are so expensive, surely your can afford a tree trimmer.

The food at the restaurant had no taste, the lamp cutlets had no ginger and garlic and the meat had an unpleasant odour. All the meals where disappointing.

Response from Molly S, Public Relations Manager at Fordoun Hotel & Spa
Responded 28 Feb 2020
Good morning Mr & Mrs Maharaj, Many thanks for your candid feedback, it is greatly appreciated as it assists us in assuring that we keep a constant finger on the pulse in all areas of our hotel and make changes and improvements where necessary. My sincerest apologies for your disappointing stay with us, from your above comments, we have not only let you as a valued guest down but have let ourselves down too. We are sorry that these below concerns were not brought to our attention whilst you were staying with us allowing us the opportunity to resolve and create a five star experience for you. We are in the business of pleasing each and every guest who visits us and our entire team all work exceptionally hard to ensure that every guest leaves our establishment completely relaxed and satisfied, sadly this was not what you experienced while visiting us. Although you did not experience this, the standard here at Fordoun is exceptionally high and management and staff alike make sure that these standards are constantly upheld as I am sure you have read in other reviews posted by guests who have stayed with us. All staff involved have been met with and spoken to about the importance of maintaining the expected standards and nothing less will be tolerated. The room you stayed in is one of our most popular and immensely enjoyed by guests who stay there, so we are just so disappointed to hear that it was not nearly up to your or our expected standard. We were a little taken aback by your remark suggesting that the room has still not been cleaned as our rooms are thoroughly cleaned and checked on a daily basis. My sincere apologies too that you found your patio, outdoor shower and pond unsatisfactory and many thanks for bringing this to our attention, Fordoun hotel, being located in the country does attract insects, mosquitoes and frogs, especially at this time of year, which unfortunately we are able to do little about. All water in the ponds around the hotel are constantly circulated to avoid stagnant or dirty water. As noisy and annoying as the frogs can be, we feel very privileged to have as many as we do on our property as it shows us that the ecology of our environment is balanced and very healthy. You are completely correct with regard to the shrubs on your patio, our maintenance staff have also been called in and sternly chatted with about falling behind on the gardening. We do own hedge trimmers and staff have been sent up to sort the issue out and to stay on top of the gardens. We have just completed an upgrade to our restaurant and menu which has been so well received by all of our patrons so we are disappointed to read that you did not enjoy your meals. Your feedback has been passed onto our chef who is going to investigate further. We urge all of our guests to report any issues that may arise immediately while staying with us as it gives us an opportunity to correct the problem straight away to ensure that our guests receive the experience that they have paid for. As much as the above is an explanation it is by no means and excuse for your disappointing stay with us and once again, our sincerest apologies. We do hope that you will give us another opportunity to redeem ourselves in the future. Kind regards, Richard Bates (MD), Jules Minton (GM) and the Fordoun team

Fordoun Spa and Hotel has some good points, such as room service and very comfortable accommodation. However, the general upkeep and maintenance of the place could do with an upgrade. The brickwork on the estate's roads is seriously below par and anybody slightly infirm will need to negotiate broken and misplaced bricks on the roads very carefully. However, the worst feature was an unilluminated trench (about 15cm deep and dirt) below some steps on the way to a particular unit, which caused me to sprain an ankle at night. I did email reception about this but never received a reply. I am now posting this to ensure that this trench is filled in and surfaced, and that it is illuminated at night, so that no one else suffers a sprained ankle as I did.

Dear Gavin, We appreciate your kind support and thank-you for your valued feedback. We are delighted your room was comfortable and service up to standard. On behalf of the Fordoun maintenance and management team, we wholeheartedly apologise for your unfortunate experience and hope your ankle is getting better. We take pride offering our guests the best experience possible and sincerely apologise. The trees roots have unfortunately uplifted paving and the trench was filled the next morning. Jules Minton, our GM will make contact directly to give you a further update and send you some pics of the trench. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. I came here with my girlfriend for our one year anniversary and I can plainly say it was worth every single cent ! From treatments in the spa to mouthwatering food at the restaurant that will leave you begging for more, Fordoun created the most amazing day and for this special occasion. The continuous greeting from all the friendly staff makes you feel welcome at all times, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they are not professional! The quality of service is impeccable and this is just the professionalism of the staff. If you want to have a special outing I would highly recommend the picnic basket which is filled with the delicious and decadent and is a must have. On arrival at our room we were astounded by the jaw dropping decor and beautiful room. The bed can only be compared to that fit for a king and queen.
I would recommend to anyone and everyone that you do yourself a favor make a booking as soon as you can!

Carpet in our room had a very damp smell.
Dam facing option was very deceiving.
Pork belly for dinner was unappetizing -no crispy crackling at all.
Spa locker room had no gown and slippers.
On check out the lady in BACK office(not front desk receptionist) walked out to greet and thank ANOTHER wedding guest who was waiting behind us to also check out- completely ignoring and overlooking us as guests . Very rude behaviour.

Dear Carol, We thank-you for taking the time to share your Fordoun experience on TripAdvisor. We greatly appreciate your kind support and valued feedback and deeply saddened to hear that your Fordoun experience did not meet expectations. The contents of your review have been noted and taken very seriously. We started working on a refurbishment programme at the beginning of the year and the dam facing room carpets are currently being replaced and apologies for the damp smell. The Midlands pork belly is one of our most popular dishes and agree should always have crackling as we normally do serve it with a generous helping of crackling. I have bought this to our Chef Jono's attention and would greatly appreciate it if you came back to offer you a Pork Belly meal with ample crackling. We wish you had brought it to our attention at the time. We apologise for not being greeted by our back office employee. Certainly not our warm, friendly service that we are renown for. We apologise profusely. We wish you and your precious family a blessed, healthy Festive Season ahead and hope we can welcome you back to Fordoun in the near future. Warm Fordoun regards, The Fordoun Team - Rich (MD, Jules (GM) and Molly (Marketing)

I needed a stop over on the way to my birthday retreat in UMhlanga as a treat and looked up possibilities here on Trip Advisor.
I settled on Fordoun.
I sent them a list of all my allergies, wheat/gluten/banana/sulphites prior to travelling.
Upon arrival, the room was cold and not ideal.
None of allergies had been catered for and I had to navigate through the menu and thankfully found something for both dinner and breakfast. Upon my departure I forgot a clothing item. They contacted me to notify me.
I gave feedback about my stay decided to stop over on the way back, rather than just collect my item.
The room was warm and great.
The chef who was new, 5 days in the job, came to speak to me and paid attention to all the allergies in preparing the meal and it was a great meal.
He also undertook to do better in future.
The staff is warm and very accommodating and based on this improved service and effort to improve, I would recommend it.
They sure can still do better to cater for allergies.

Gorgeous setting with the lush green pastures and tasteful décor.
Staff at spa and restaurant very friendly and helpful.
We stayed at the superior rooms ( room 21) . Beautifully decorated however the heating needs improvement. The fire place does not warm the room and something was wrong with the timer for the underfloor heating. This made the dressing area and bathroom very cold.
The lounge area could not be enjoyed due to the cold weather and poor heating in the room. I also had to inform the staff that the hot water ran out after 5 minutes in the shower.
There was a delay at supper due to the large volumes of orders that went into the kitchen at once. My food was divine however my husbands Salmon was burnt. He did inform the staff , who prepared another dish for him and that was enjoyable and appreciated.
Overall good stay however would advise that the superior rooms are only booked in summer or until the heating in the room is improved.
