We stayed at the Farm Village as we wanted accomodation with a microwave and food prep area. We stayed in a 1 bed chalet. Pros: -The accommodation was large, spacious, tastefully albeit very simply decorated and clean. -It came with a full kitchen which was well equipped with everything we needed including a Weber braai. -There was a lovely terrace accessible from the living area & bedroom, facing the hills -One has access to the main hotel facilities including the lovely restaurant where we had the most delicious breakfasts -The grounds were beautiful and tranquil with the bikes, a small lake and nice walking trails Cons: -The chalet was cold during the day- and freezing at night. There is no proper heating apart from a fireplace in the living area. -The farm village is incredibly poorly lit. Arriving at night we found ourselves in pitch darkness & having to use our car headlights and phones to light up the area around the chalet -The bed linen, scatters & towels have seen better days -The decor is extremely basic . A few inexpensive touches like rugs, throws, nice scatters could really cozy up the place -Lastly we were informed of a discount by my son's boarding school for visiting parents who stay at Fordoun . The receptionist initially confirmed this but when i went to check out the person there didn't know anything about it. Odd In any event I'll try it again but maybe the main hotel this time & save the chalets for the warmer months…
The spa at Fordoun is always great, we had an afternoon of glorious treatments. The rooms are comfortable and were lovely and warm. The staff are so friendly and very professional. The dinner was average, the breakfast was delicious.
Fordoun Spa and Hotel has some good points, such as room service and very comfortable accommodation. However, the general upkeep and maintenance of the place could do with an upgrade. The brickwork on the estate's roads is seriously below par and anybody slightly infirm will need to negotiate broken and misplaced bricks on the roads very carefully. However, the worst feature was an unilluminated trench (about 15cm deep and dirt) below some steps on the way to a particular unit, which caused me to sprain an ankle at night. I did email reception about this but never received a reply. I am now posting this to ensure that this trench is filled in and surfaced, and that it is illuminated at night, so that no one else suffers a sprained ankle as I did.
My husband and I have gone to numerous hotel spas and nothing compares to the Fordoun, from the service received, to the amazing and efficient staff, to the scenery and accommodation, Fordoun’s no.1!!
Fantastic place and very friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful setting. The food was excellent and the hotel was very accommodating of my request for a packed breakfast on one of the days when needed. Very highly recommended.
A lovely hotel, our room was spacious and well appointed, and spotlessly clean. The staff were great, freindly and helpful, and the restaurant food superb - but beware - huge portions. We were embarassed to keep sending it back but just too large for us! The underfloor heating in the bathroom was heavenly.
A perfect country getaway, peaceful, tranquil, beautiful gardens, and great mountain views. The accommodation was spacious and comfortable. The staff were friendly, the food was excellent … and the Spa was exceptional.
Our expensive room had a broken door knob! Also the the breakfast of salmon and hollandaise was the worst I have had in my life. I love this place we been visiting for the past seven years! I’m sad to see it drop the standard so low!
The place was lovely, room was very comfortable, and the food was excellent without being overpriced. The staff were most friendly and seem eager to please. Our visit to the Spa was professionally handled and very emjoyable
After two years apart, I was looking for somewhere special to take my mum and enjoy some quality time together. Fordoun could not have been better. From the gorgeous hilltop suite to the spa pampering to the magnificent Drakensberg views, it was exactly the tonic we needed. The Fordoun staff are professional, friendly and welcoming - just a credit to the hotel. Every single person we encountered was helpful and kind. Small touches, such as the person who cleaned our car, or the service staff who whisked us up the hill in the golf cart when it was raining, or the lovely gentleman who built a fire in our suite on a cold evening, really made us feel welcome and at home. The spa staff are world-class! We had blissful massages, facials and reflexology. This is a five star establishment that feels like home, and that is a really hard balance to achieve.…
