My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Rich and Jerry. I felt like I was visiting relatives, that is how comfortable you are made to feel. Loved hearing the history of the building. Room was very inviting and I appreciated the attention to detail this inn has to offer. Breakfast was amazing! Met many other wonderful guests as well for all over. Will definitely return!

I booked a 4 night stay for $1,200 (excluding tax). That’s a lot of money for such a short stay, but I thought it would be worth it to have a high quality experience at a well-managed inn. The room I took was called “Mt. Randolph”. My first night, the AC remote wasn’t working, so I didn’t sleep much as the room was way too warm. I reported it to Jerry the next day. He apologized and had the remote fixed. Losing a night of sleep is frustrating, but I can tolerate the odd problem in isolation. What happened after that, though… My third night in, I discovered a mouse in my room. I was in the bathroom, and I heard something scurrying about inside the wall behind the bathroom mirror. A couple of minutes later, a mouse strolled right underneath the door and into the bathroom with me. For the next hour or so I chased the mouse around the unit, trying unsuccessfully to trap it in the trash can. I called the Inn’s number to report the issue, but nobody picked up. It was a little before 11pm on Friday night. I then continued to chase the mouse around and managed to trap it between the sliding glass door and screen door that lead to the balcony. This is when I got a call back from Jerry. I could tell he was half asleep, and that my call had woken him up. I apologized for waking him, told him about the mouse and that I had managed to trap it, and told him we could discuss it the next day since the situation seemed to be under control. He didn’t say much beyond “OK good,” which I chalked up to him being half asleep. I kept checking on the mouse as I ate and got ready for bed. Obviously, I could not sleep, hearing the mouse running back and forth as it tried to figure out how to escape. Around 3am I realized I could no longer hear the mouse running around inside the sliding door assembly. I checked on it, and sure enough during its few hours of captivity it had found a way out by chewing away a bit of foam weatherstripping in the corner. It was back in the room with me. I spent the rest of the night half awake. The next day I packed up my stuff and checked out, one day early. Obviously, I didn’t want to spend another night with the mouse. I wanted to discuss what happened with Jerry, but he wasn’t there. So I told my story to the person who was filling in for him. I think her name was Rosie. She took down some notes based on what I told her and told me she’d share them with Jerry when he got back. I left New Hampshire, expecting to discuss this with Jerry over the phone. It’s been several days since then and I haven’t heard from anyone at the Inn at Bowman. The owners don’t seem to care that they have a rodent problem, or that they put one of their own guests in a room with a mouse. What’s more, inside one of the cabinets in my room I found two Victor snap traps. This tells me that the room has had a rodent problem in the past, and that the owners allow guests to stay in rooms with known rodent problems. The room has many oversized wall and floor penetrations for plumbing and heating. The mouse was using these oversized holes to get into and out of the room. I could even see mouse poop inside the cabinets. Competent innkeepers would have closed up all of these penetrations at the first sign of rodents, in addition to trapping or killing any rodents actively in the room. Otherwise, you get rid of one rodent and just end up with another taking its place. Empathetic innkeepers would not have allowed guests into any room with a known rodent problem. And innkeepers with a basic sense of decency would have spoken to their guest to apologize for such a terrible experience as mine, and tried to make amends somehow. The owners of the Inn at Bowman did none of these things. It’s bad enough that there was a mouse in my room, but even worse that the owners didn’t seem to think it was a big deal. I am flabbergasted at how many positive reviews there are here on TripAdvisor. Maybe my experience is an extreme aberration. Or maybe my expectations are unrealistic. I mean, do visitors to New Hampshire expect to share their lodging with the odd mouse or two? I don’t know. What I do know is that at $300 per night I plainly got ripped off. And the owners’ non-management of the rodent problem and lack of response to what I reported to them is disgraceful.

Response from Jerry Hamanne, Owner at Inn At Bowman

We are sorry you decided to cut short your stay at the Inn at Bowman, based on your experiences with the AC remote control and with the unwanted visitor in your room. However, given that we responded immediately to your concerns when they were made known to us, we’re not exactly sure what else we could have done to have alleviated your misgivings and negative reactions. We take pride at the Inn at Bowman in maintaining both high guest satisfaction, as well as our cleanliness, responsiveness, and comfort level of all of our guests. We have the highest ratings on TripAdvisor in the North Country, for which we work hard and continue to strive for improvements, when possible. The remote control for the AC was functional, but needed a new battery, which, once you alerted us to this, we immediately replaced. Had you let us know the evening you were unable to operate it properly, we would’ve expedited that action on your behalf. As for the uninvited mouse, as much as we keep the property pest free, with ongoing maintenance and treatment, there will occasionally be an unwanted pest that makes its way inside of our property. The room you chose has 5 other suites and rooms, all of which are maintained similarly. We do apologize for the inconvenience you experienced, and as you state in your post, we DID respond immediately at a very late hour to your complaint. I’m sorry that you decided to take leave from the remainder of your stay, but that choice was something you made with full knowledge of our very fair and well-documented cancellation policies. Once again, had you asked us to alleviate the situation the night it was discovered, we would have been pleased to do so, but you informed us that the situation was ‘under control’. I’m certain you would not find anywhere else in our area who would’ve dealt with these two situations in a more expeditious, professional, and courteous manner. We are sorry we could not have responded to your concerns to your liking. We wish you the best in your future stays in the North Country. Safe travels !

I've stayed at the Inn at Bowman in the past, but I have to say it's now better than ever. I stayed a couple of nights in the Mt. Madison Queen Room with views out to the pool and the White Mountains in the distance. It's clean, decent sized, and very quiet. The Inn was booked solid on Sunday night, and everyone was treated to an informal BBQ around the outdoor heated pool and patio. There's also an outdoor kitchen where the home-cooked burgers and hot dogs were served on paper plates atop basket chargers. Also served up was corn on the cob, real butter, potato salad, Cole slaw, baked beans, and all the fixings for the burgers and dogs. Yummy!! People could dine al fresco around one of the several patio tables with umbrellas, or take their dinners back inside...their choice! Breakfast is served by the innkeepers fresh every morning and includes fresh baked breads, muffins, bagels, mini-veggie quiches, fresh melon and berries, and a variety of cold cereals. You won't get this good of a breakfast anywhere in any franchise hotels...trust me! There's a player piano that seems to attract both 'real' piano players, as well as those who just like to pump the old-fashioned player piano with a HUGE variety of rolls of songs that date from the 1800's up through contemporary pieces, including 'The Shadow Of Your Smile', among many others. Each room has its own mini-split AC/heat, that silently keeps the room at the temperature desired. Flat screen TVs in every room, and of course high-speed WIFI/internet. You can't beat the property for its hospitality, amenities, home-away-from-home ambiance, and friendly hosts and guests. Whether you're a solo traveler, a couple, a small family, or a group that wants to be in one place, you'll find the Inn at Bowman 'tops' in the North Country. Don't suffer by choosing a room for a few bucks less down the road a piece, or in the adjacent hamlet of Gorham. They just don't compare. Did I mention the killer views of the White Mountains?

Jerry was a very accommodating host. Gorgeous plants and flowers. Lovely pool and hot tub patio. Classic, Victorian style B&B decor. Gorgeous location with mountains. Extensive breakfast that worked for our mutually complicated dietary preferences. Rick and Jerry welcomed out taking a self guided tour of their greenhouse. It was fun to see how many routine "regulars" were staying there, too. We will be back.
