Beautifully located on Val river this lodge aspires to be a destination by itself. During our stay they advertised weekend or holiday packages. They host small conferences as well. The staff is friendly and helpful. The meals were included in our stay and admittedly the food was good.
We lived in the upstairs of a cabin - room number one. We had a great view of the river and we were adjacent to the swimming pool. Our location allowed us to see Val river sunset.
The room was comfortable but very dark and the lighting extremely poor. The toiletries were limited. The door to the bathroom had an awkward handle. Coming out one could pinch one's hand easily. No TV. Tea and coffee station in the corner of the room. Theoretically there is WiFi but weak and inconsistent, practically not allowing for any use. That is not the fault of the facility but rather local internet provider issue.
The river walk extending from the grounds of the SunWa River Lodge is very interesting from geological point of view. Geologists come here to see pseudotachylites attributable to the area's ancient impact called Vredefort. The surroundings of the Lodge are nicely appointed. We enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at SunWa as part of an NAC weekend.
Parys is an awesome town and has so many great restaurants and guest houses, this is not one of them.

Our room (an upstairs room) was absolutely filthy.
Every night when we for back to the room, our bed was covered by hundreds of little insects (like ants).

We were a big group, but the bar never had enough wine glasses which was a poor effort.

SunWa is in a beautiful spot on the river, but the river front was filthy. Didn't look like there was any attempt to keep it clean.

The lodge seemed to have some nice conference facilities etc, but there didn't seem to be any pride in keeping the place clean.

What a quaint place with 5*service - all the staff, Francois, Bryan, Charl, Elizna (spelling?) all went out of their way to make our stay a great one. The team building activities were well planned and executed. The rooms were clean with fresh bedding. The food was delicious and wholesome with the most delicious bread baked fresh for lunch and dinner.
Definitely going back in river rafting season.
Thank U one and all for your exceptional service.

What a fantastic venue on the Vaal River, 5star service, great food and friendly staff. They also cater for weddings and corporate groups. Also on offer are various activities like river rafting, fishing and flyfishing. A stunning view over the river and surrounding hills, simply breathtaking.

We checked in on a Friday after golf
Room 26 is upstairs
The monkeys continually pestered us
If door or windows were slightly open they attempted access
It was very hot and the fan ( no aircon ) did not work
No one really cared
After a complaint 6vpeople showed up and in typical African style got it too work
The service at restaurant and pubs was good
This resort is for young groups
Team building exercises are noisy and it appears management cannot control monkeys
It is a great location on the river
But it is rustic

Stayed in the cottages for the weekend. It's a bit small. But it's nice and cosy. Has a restaurant and bar area. Not much activities to do close by. So I guess if you looking for a nice quite place then this is for you.

We booked our year end weekend at Sunwa, I do my research before and always check ratings and trip advisor just to make sure we are not paying for a horrible experience....

All the reviews seemed to check out , photos on trip advisor and on the website is awesome.... we are going so Sunwa.

we booked dinned bed and breakfast plus activity for the weekend.

That being said.....

what we experienced when we arrived at Sunwa was total let down and not what was advertises.

Checkin was without a hassle.
We where a group of 8 people and the receptionist said there was another group arriving the next day.

the rooms did not look like the rooms that was advertised on the website but the rooms was clean and that was ok.

The entertainment area:

The swimming pool was dirty, green and full of slime. it being 38 degrees and there only fans in the rooms and dinning area, we decides to take a bullet and jump in...
I started to clean the filters of the pool as we where going to be there the whole weekend and did not want to keep swimming in a filthy swimming pool. the filter was so clogged up and clearly have not been cleaned for more than 2 weeks.

the group decided to just make the best of the weekend that cost close to R20,000.00
and " turn a blind eye"
the next day the maintenance guy started to clean the pool.

Dinning : WOW what a totally different experience..... all the staff so friendly and accommodating always making sure that you ware comfortable.
They prepared a buffet style dinner for us and compliments to the chef... the best beef curry we had in a long time...

Sunwa really was and could still be a dream destination....

to the NEW owners:

the staff you have really goes the extra mile and try to make ends meet with what they have to their disposal. YOU as owners need to meet them half way and provide the needed equipment and upgrades needed to return Sunwa to its former glory. you owe it to each and every employe at Sunwa that despite the run down building and amenities , still tries their best to make sure the guest have a pleasant stay!

thank you to each member of staff that made our stay lovely despite the challenges they faced.

What a beautiful place to visit. To be so close to nature is a privilege. This resort has so much potential. We were in the rooms next to the Duck pond. There are no ceilings and the people next to us were smoking a Hubbly during the night. Because of no ceiling the smells was in our room as well. The room was huge with lots of space. Anoter small table or shelf would be quite handy in the room.

We really enjoyed walking on the rocks and getting quite close to the river. The area was however not very clean. The duck pond's water were green and slimy. Even the ponds closer to the main buildings were dirty.
We enjoyed the supper and breakfasts. The food was well-prepared and the service satisfactory.
With more finishing touches this beautiful place can be a super holiday resort.

Went for a company conference, most rooms were dark and inadequate lighting facilities, most room had yellow bulbs for some reason. A colleague had room 20, this is recently renovated and very spacious, rest of the rooms dark and small. The rooms had lots of spiders, this was a common complaint of the group especially from the ladies. The food was very below standard, from breakfast, lunch and dinner with most ppl in the group falling ill at some point during our 4 day stay. It must be noted there is no fresh fruit, yogurt or cereal for breakfast, special diet request were forgotten about, there is a sad fresh salad for lunch and dinner. There is also no vegetable served with lunch and diner and food lack flavour.

It must also be noted that the bathrooms also have a yellow light most likely to hide the mould in the shower. Shower is okay but definitely not awesome.

It should be noted that the setting of the lodge on the river is very peaceful and at no time did i feel unsafe. Very nice gardens.
