After reading rave reviews about the place I decided it was the perfect place to go for some rest and relaxation. The lady who took my booking on the phone was a bit icy but I went ahead and booked a room anyway. When I got there to check in the reception I received was equally icy. I asked about things to see and do in town but the reception lady was not helpful at all and just handed me the key and said no more. The room was clean and very pretty. The TV only had only the pathetic local channels. So I went to bed early but couldn't sleep because the dog on the property barked incessantly most of the night. My breakfast pack was equally disappointing. All in all I was happy to leave the next morning for the rest of my holiday.

The "guest farm" is located a few km outside the business centre of Parys and you get to drive across the Vaal River to get there from Parys. It is not an actual farm, rather guest accommodation on a large plot of land.

There were many units and rooms, which meant that there were many people staying there. Our neighbours came home quite late and were extremely noisy.

Our room was clean, pretty, but small with a fridge and kettle but no other self-catering capabilities. The bathroom only had a shower. The bedroom had a double bed. There was a TV, with local channels.

The staff were helpful and recommended several restaurants in Parys as well as suggestions for the rest of our touring holiday.

There was a small swimming pool and two dams for small bird watching.

A little pricey for what we got.

We arrived at short notice to be warmly greeted by our host Sharon and shown our immaculate room Augusta...just perfect for our needs. Lavender Hills has a vast range of accommodation for all group sizes...each having it's own unique style. The location to Parys is a short drive of a few K's away....the town itself was a hive of activity with quaint eateries and shops...a bit like Franschoek in a way. The only downside to Parys is the litter problem...our other favorite towns in SA namely Clarens and Dullstroom seem to take more pride in the state of their streets.

We spent one night on the "Farm", which is actually just a plot with houses. Although the sign at the gate offers 24/7 reception we found no one to receive us. We had to call the host by phone (luckily I had a Southafrican SIM card or else it would have been quite expensive).

The room we got was clean, equipped with a small kitchen including fridge and a bathroom with tub and shower.

As it is wintertime in there in June the room was very cold and the heater did not work (Quote: "may be we ran out of gas") The radiator provided was to small to get the temperature in the room up to an acceptable level and what's even worse is that the bathroom had no heating at all and as it is often the case in Southafrica it has no outlet to plug in the heater. The morning shower was quite an endurance.

But the worst was the "breakfast": A plastic pack with eggs, a croissant that tasted like cardboard and some unidentifiable deep fried ice-cold items sprinkled with black dog hair. It looks nice on the picture, but it wasn't! It went right to the trash can and we had a wonderful breakfast in town.

Got to Lavender Hills to a very friendly reception, we were shown our room and the best places to head for dinner and wine tasting. The room was fantastic, warm and spacious. It was pre warmed for us, which was great in the middle of winter. Very relaxing and beautiful scenery around with the lavender. We woke up and had a delicious breakfast, with plenty to eat and then was told about the best things to do eat best places to eat at on our way back to CT. When I told Don the owner that the lavender scenery was fantastic he offered to give me a large bunch of Lavender, which was very kind. A great stay with very friendly service.

I so loved Lavender Hills on the previous visit however this time was a disaster. Sharon is still awesome and most welcoming but due to the load shedding, there was no electricity AND no water cause they use bore hold water that requires electricity to pump. There main trouble is that there was no generator and no alternatives. We were phoned in the morning to bring our own torches. But there was no electricity or water in the night or in the morning. I had taken my boys so that they could experience this place and Parys and it was all quite a mess and we left early as we could not bath/shower nor could we cook food. With no recourse. If you run a b&b in South Africa today where all your amenities rely on electricity you should have alternative options. I also understand that the electricity issue is not their fault. Anyway it was certainly a waste of money and disappointing.

On a recent visit to Parys to attend a wedding, we stayed over at the Lavender Hill Guest Farm. Lovely neat, and cosy interiors. Quiet surroundings. A well-kept pool to cool off in the heat of the afternoon. Sharon, the hostess, is hospitable and professional.

Lavender Hills lies just outside of Parys. We were passing through on the way to the Golden Gate park. Parys is a nice town for a day, lots of shops. The farm itself is quite large and really quiet. Breakfast was for us to take out of the fridge in our own room, no buffet. We seemed to be more or less alone on the farm, so we had two nice pools for ourselves. A perfect location for an overnight stay!

Spent two nights at Lavenger Hill. The grounds were well looked after and clean. The rooms each have a theme and are clean, with a bar fridge, kettle, etc. After coming back to the guest house at the end of the day, the best was to just sit on the stoep and relax in the peaceful surroundings. When I'm in Parys again, I'll be staying at the Lavender Hall Guest Farm.

We were given the aqua room which was either a converted garage or servants quarters . It is so narrow that it’s difficult getting out of bed on the sides . The strip light above the bed which was the only light in the room, was hanging and dangling from its electrical wire.
The rug at the bottom of the bed had some tiny thorns .
Friends were placed in bigger equally priced rooms which were much nicer and would attract a higher rating by me . As for our room, a big NO .

Response from Lavenderhillsguest, Manager at Lavender Hills Guest House
Responded 14 Aug 2018
Dear Arthur, I, Sharon, am most disappointed that you had a few issues with your 'Aqua' unit and I only wish you had brought any complaints to my attention immediately on check-in. I would have been more that happy to attend to any problems and/or move you to another unit for the evening. I will be in touch with you personally in this regard. Regards Sharon
