Overnight stay in Porcupine Cottage. Lovely setting on the banks of the Vaal. Cottage provides straightforward unpretentious accommodation, which we enjoy. Very adequately equipped for self-catering (for 3 people), and we appreciated the thoughtful provision of milk, coffee and teabags though we had remembered to bring our own. The cooking & dining area is on an open verandah, and my wife and I loved sitting there and enjoyed our braai on a beautiful evening, & our breakfast the following morning . It might be less congenial in wet weather or in winter!

We decided on short notice that we needed a break and sought accommodation that was not far from Johannesburg and also pet friendly. The Cormorant cabin at Otters Haunt was ideal for our family with two teenagers. The cabin itself was very convenient and catered for all the basic requirements. Otters Haunt is beautiful and very peaceful, with Karen and Greame being the perfect hosts. My husband and myself had a peaceful time just relaxing on the cabins stoep, listening to the birds and walking around. The teenagers had a awesome time swimming, fishing, kayaking, river rafting and cycling. The dogs absolutely loved the outing. We will definitely be back!

Excellent place for anyone who just wants to go and rest. Good facilities. Great experience for people with dogs as Ottors haunt is pet-friendly, which was exactly what we were looking for. Comfortable check-in (late check-in can be arranged).

Thank you Etresia. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Being close to nature is very peaceful and relaxing.. You stayed at the Cormorant cabin so had the bird calls all around you.

Otters Haunt review

The weekend started well, the host is friendly and did not mind that we arrived a few minutes prior to check-in. The house is well situated, and the private pool is an added bonus.

The only issue is that we were with 3 month old baby, and the lights went off at 22h15 each night and came back on just a few minutes before 7am. This is was not mentioned on the booking information or on any other communication. Had we known this we would have arranged come with rechargeable lights or battery powered lights, as the baby wakes up during the night, and having to feed and change baby in the dark was very inconvenient, as the option of candles was not very feasible, especially with kids and a baby. And also keep not keep the baby's bottles warm overnight, as there was no electricity throughout the night.

Another issue was that there was a lot of spiderwebs (which implies that the house and patio was not well cleaned prior to our arrival) and since doors and windows were left open before we arrived, we were greeted by 2 frogs and a scorpion in the rooms

My girlfriend (now my wife) and I decided to visit Parys over a weekend in May. Not only did the owners assist us with late check-in times but they also went the extra mile when I asked them to help me set up something on the island in the Vaal-River where I proposed. The facilities were lovely, the kayaks were amazing and our stay was awesome. Just what we needed for a weekend away and to celebrate one of the biggest events in our lives. Feel free to book your stay at Otter's Haunt, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

We weren't there to enjoy any of the activities on offer, we just needed a break. This place was perfect for that. Private, safe and peaceful. If you're expecting everything to be pristine, slick and new, this is not the place for you. We liked the fact that they live off the grid, are dog friendly, and respected our need for space. The staff and hosts were friendly and helpful. The house we were in was perfectly adequate for us. The location is far enough away from Parys, but close enough if you want to go out for a meal. Next time, I'd like to take advantage of the river sports on offer.

We enjoyed our stay at the resort and loved the sound of the river. It is a place where you can relax and the unit is only a few metres from the river. The resort is well maintained. With the warm weather we could cool off in a nice, clean swimming pool.

Otters Haunt is situated right at the Vaal River, in the middle of a 2 billion year old meteorite crater. We could only stay for one night, but Karen made it possible to have a guided 2h hike on the morning of departure, where we could see what is still visible today from that massive meteorite impact, and learned a lot about it. We had a very restful night, enjoyed the bird song in the morning -- a truly peaceful hideaway. We would have loved to stay longer.

Me and my husband celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary the week end of 29-31 January 2021. We stayed in the Guinea Fowl cottage. The setting was perfect, private and we enjoyed sitting on the veranda very much, just watching and listening to nature. The cottage reminds me of a small farm house and was equipped with everything you may need for a week end.

We relaxed so nicely. The Bush Camp is great for family or friends to relax together in privacy. It was so peaceful and private with our own swimming pool, Lapa, kitchen and bathrooms. We will definitely go again.
